Sounds like you have a nice place to shoot Bart. I live in San Jose. Don't get up your way much unless I am heading to Clear Lake for fishing.  It sounds tempting to be able to shoot long distance. I have an RWS 48 in .177.

a shoot out sounds great, i have a few friends in my class with springers rangeing from 750fps -1000 fps, looks like i may be the big boy with teh trail but i still need to get the darn thing.  i did speak with a nice guy named brad from myairsoftarmy.com he said they all basically use the same supplier and that base supplier is out untill mid to late november, so it looks like i will have 2000 pellets and no gun in a few days  :(

oh well, gives me more time to practice with other, but i should have it before christmas break so im slightly happy for that

Hi Bart,

I live in San Jose and I get up to Clear lake every other month or so. Keep me informed of any shoots going on. I'm pretty new to this sport, so I don't know how many shooters there are in my area. Maybe people could take turns taking road trips up and down Northern California. I am a regular at the local rifle ranges and trap courses.

Cheers,

How many here shoot with iron sights (no scope)? I have gone full circle and now shoot every thing with iron sights. No my eyes didn't get young again, but when hunting hogs with scoped .30-06 I found it hard to find them through my scope. I have decided to go retro and shoot iron sights only with most all my guns. It's what our grandpas and grandmas used to do and hey...the didn't starve. Am I nuts or what?

MKLEIN - I am a catfishing fan too.  Used to hang out on the delta and fish all night.  I am no longer in the Bay Area.  I have moved east of Lodi in the foothills of Gold Rush Country.  I will let you know the next time I head up to Clear Lake.  I need to do a little work on my boat. The engine isn't getting fuel like it should, so I'm going install an electric fuel pump.  Once gas gets to the engine it runs fine.  After setting a while it is difficult to start.  I believe the primer squeeze ball is the problem.  I could just replace it and be done.  Either way I like fishing and shooting.  Thanks for the invite.

Hey Guys. I live in the San Jose Area and would like to get my NPSS tuned and have some parts I bought here on the forum installed. Do  any of you guys know of a good Gunsmith in the area who can do the work? Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

Welcome! Airguns usually aren't taken to gunsmiths like powder burners, tunes for airguns can be done with simple tools and a chronograph.  I know we have at least 1 other San Jose area member, maybe he'll chime in or be able to help!

Like is says below. I'm in Santa Rosa. I'm going hunting rabbit in the morning (getting up at 3 ack emma) with my Gamo Whisper halfway between Novato and Vallejo. So far the rabbits have won. I'm bringing a little folding seat, perhaps I'll just wait for them to come to me. Last time I stalked two, but they kept stalking away. I think I'll use my tall shooting sticks so I can shoot over and not through most of the vegetation. I'll be traveling on my Honda Rebel motorcycle. Also I calibrated my binoculars to function as a simple ranging device.

I'm open to get together. My backyard only supports about ten yards and I'd love to shoot at longer distances. I might be able to squeeze 13 if I really try. I do have a portable silent trap that I built.

I wonder if there are areas around where I could target practice, but at most parks that would be brandishing.

I'm finding it a conundrum to find a place to go shoot. I'm a block away from open grass lands but I believe I'd be hauled off to jail if I got caught wandering out there. Would not want my airguns to be mistaken for a "sniper" gun by the cops.

So I'm designing a pellet trap to fit my needs, till I find an outdoor place to go plinking.

Hah...went there last week at the sonoma/Napa Marsh. Bagged me 2 Jacks...there were everywhere but i didnt want to shoot anymore as it was my first time shooting Jack Wabbits and didn't know what to do with them. Anyway, the place says "No Rifles or Pistols allowed, Only Shotguns" but pellet guns are allowed as they are not quite classified as Firearms. Just make sure to take the Wabbits with you. I am also looking to make me a silent trap. Thinking about going to Mendocino Forest this Saturday 8/25. Anybody know a good spot for Groud Squeeks up there?

You got two! I've been to that place like six times and have nothing to show. I'm a total noob though. I almost hit a jack when I pulled in one time though and chased two the last time I was there but couldn't seem to hit anything and my brain was racing too much for me to figure out the range.

There's the view platform by the parking lot and across the way is a little bunny island, but all the droppings there seem old. I've watched that island from the bank and never seen much of anything. It appears to have burrows although I don't know if their current.

I've been getting there around dawn and walking from the parking lot all the way around to the old house/place and a bit further then walking back. I generally spot rabbits in the area a few hundred yards from the house (about halfway up the lot).

Oh I scouted out the Burdell unit by the Novato airport. It's a big cow pasture. There are lots of standing water so it's probably great for ducks and geese but I didn't see any rabbits. Lots of birds. Two coyotes at the end that sorta stalked me. A large bull that also sorta stocked me and I kept well clear of.

So last Saturday, I went to North cow mountain.."dang" the place was all burned down. I guess I should have checked the website first. Oh well. As for the Sonoma/Napa marsh, I went to the Sonoma creek on by 37 bridge north (the side where you coming from Vallejo to Novato. There's a parking spot there. Walk on the little levy all the way around. That morning I didn't get any as I had my PRod and they were out of range for my carbine. That evening, I went with my 25 MRod. They had no chance. Got one at 75 yards and one at 60 yards. Took me about 5 minutes.

Anyway, I am really looking for a good spot for ground squirrels. Might have to drive down and check out Los Padres National forest. I also need to get me some private lands to do some depredation/pest control. Just too chicken to ask a landowner/farmer.

Well, good luck. Oh what is your hunting rig (gun)?
Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!

Boggs is supposed to be great for tree squirrel, but I honestly don't remember for ground squirrel. There are probably some there somewhere as their all over that area. It's up by middletown. I've been hutning with my Gamo Whisper. I'm not confident out to those ranges, but should be ok to at least 20 yards, perhaps more. Next time I'm going to bring some simple targets and try longer ranges. My backyard is only 10 yards.

I stalked two jacks at the sonoma creek marsh but completely failed. I kept creeping up and they kept bouncing off. I had trouble estimating the range and wanted to get closer. It was the first time I'd really cranked up the scope to 9X. Their ears almost look on fire in the morning sun, sorta redwood color. If I were confident at a 50 yard shot, I would have bagged at least two.

What time of the day were they active at? I was trying to get there a half hour before dawn.
Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!
Post by: IslandShooter on August 28, 2012, 02:33:38 AM
I went there early morning and also hour before sunset. You're right, early morning sun makes their ears look red..very cool. They were doing the same thing to me...hopping off just over 50 yards out, range limit of my Marauder Pistol. Thats why i went that afternoon with my Marauder 25 rifle. Hey, You shouldve shot them coyotes. I pretty sure they are like ground squirrels where you can shoot all year. Thanks for the heads up on Boggs, I might scout it this weekend. Tree squirrel season opens on the 8th...can't wait.

Oh the jacks were active early morning and evening. I got there around 7am, they were everywhere. Then got there again at 7pm, I think sunset was at 8 something,, there wasn't that many but then again I only went hundred yards in and got the 2. So much fun sniping them wabbits.

Hey I saw you were looking for Cometa Pellets. I got a tin but it's for my .25 cal marauder. I got them from Tim at Mac1 air. I'm pretty sure he has some for your caliber. I been using JSB exacts and waiting for Predator Polymags coming tomorrow. Walmart sells crosman Hollowpoints which are the best pellets for my Marauder carbine pistol.

Alright, thanks for the info..happy shooting.

I didn't have a gun with me when I was out by the Novato airport. I walked the railroad tracks to get out there and you're supposed to go there by boat. I just wanted to scout it out. Didn't see any wildlife but birds and the coyotes. Lots of ducks. The bull made me nervous as it was kinda pacing me at 300 yards. The two coyotes made me nervous as well. I'm pretty sure I could take a coyote in a fight, but it's not my ideal evening.

Thanks for the info. I'd better bring my tall shooting sticks and do some 40 yard practice. I tried my short shooting sticks but that far down you're shooting through a ton of brush.

Boggs has deer, boar, bear, tree squirrel, probably rabbits somewhere probably game birds too. It's pretty large, get the map and maybe even the big topo map. There are roads everywhere. There is a big meadow lots of mountains and streams. 4WD isn't required but helps. There's a free (little wild west) range up there too. Wonder if there's turkey. I'm going to be up there when squirrel season opens. The rangers say they see a ton of tree squirrel.

Oh the "friends of boggs mountain" have posted some weird rules that are miss conceptions. You can shot five feet off a road so long as your off it, that 150 yards is nonsense. You can't shoot across a road, that's illegal. You can't shoot 150 yards from buildings.

;DHere goes another year and I'm hoping to see some interest in organized air gun competition. Last year was a washout due to health concerns. I've suggested an informal sillouette competition, I don't know enough about field target to set up a course. Being in NORCAL means we must drive a distance to do anything, as I'm 2 hrs north of Sacramento. Anyone thinking about a spring meet? What airgun clubs are out there? All the shooting clubs near me are all long range firearm oriented, maybe Redding has some airgunners. Happy New Year!

I went hunting Sunday with my new Shotgun in Lake County (Cache Creek). I saw blue jays and woodpeckers. Have more ideas for exploring next time. Trying to learn to read the scat and footprints. Did track an adult male and female with a juvenile and a canine, but I don't think their in season.

Luv my shotgun. Birds, squirrels, deer, bear, boars all with the same gun. Now if only I found some critters. Oh well, it's hunting, not killing. Will have to read more and try more.

I brought my pellet rifle along but I haven't had much luck hunting with it yet so I thought I'd lower the bar and concentrate on bringing home some meat. The shotgun is actually lighter than my Gamo Whisper.

I'm currently talking to several ranchers at breakfast about airguns and their ability to eliminate the varmints that plague their walnut and almond and prune orchards. We're talking about several hundred acres among the four of them. One sticking point these ranchers always have is liability. That is a guy comes up from the city , trips over an irrigation pipe, and sues them for a bunch. I'm thinking that someone with legal expertise could come up with a waiver form to allay their fears. I currently have access , but I'm a local, and" they know where I live". so to speak. Anybody got any ideas in this vein?

im pretty sure you can get a lawyer friend or just hire on to whip up a waiver.

It may work but many people know their worthless. In CA you can't sign away your rights. You can sue even if you sign a wavier. A wavier will document your intent though and they generally stop most folks from trying to sue.

today i finely tuned my crosman 2100b to be incredibly accurate at 15 yards on the iron sights. That's the optimal hunting range for this pumper. I can hit a penny at 15 yards 2/3 times.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this thread until just now...

I'm in Sacramento, too, and I go to see my parents in Colusa, and the in-laws down near Stockton. Both sets live outside of town and have ag land, so that's perfect.

Because I live in town, I have to find places to shoot. I am more than happy to drive a few hours to meet folks for some shooting, especially as I am VERY new to this (my .22 RWS clone from Mike Melick will supposedly be here, tomorrow). I've always used a 22LR for pest control, and will eventually start approaching ag-land owners about management.

I hope to see some of you, soon!

Hey gang,

I'm in San Jose.  I'm getting accustomed to ponying up $16 to shoot at an indoor range, but once the weather settles down will look into a few 2 hour drive options for hunting and general target practice.  If I come up with something, I'll post it here and see if you guys want to join.

Throwing my hat in the ring....

You can shoot n the backyard if you have a quiet gun, a lot of nutters and sparrows in cal.

^ That would have to be a _really_ quiet gun. A lot of people in cities freak out if they hear noises they can't identify. To be honest, I miss hearing guns during duck season...
Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!

I disagree. I have been target shooting in my back yard in the middle of residential Santa Rosa (two blocks from McDonnalds) for over a year. If I shoot something supersonic I think that would generate interest. I have switched to a silent trap which probably helps, but I also bought a spinning target recently. I mostly shoot a Gamo Whisper, but often shot other less quiet guns. The loudest are the CO2 guns and pumpers. That's target practice, 100 shots per session or so. I think the neighbors must think I do lots of stapling work or just don't care. It's really not that loud past a fence.

Then there's pest control. That's only a couple shots over a long range of time unless your doing it wrong. In my experience, even with completely paranoid neighbors it's not noticeable. Going around with a gun is noticeable. Shooting an air gun is not. The point is to not let anyone see you wandering around with a gun. Hold it vertically by the barrel and it's suddenly a lot less noticeable. Shoot out a open window with the muzzle inside rather than outside. If your really concerned cut two large holes in a cardboard box and shoot with the muzzle inside that.

Hm... I'm glad to hear that you're able to do that. I might try it, then. Most of the people I've spoken to in Sacramento get weird about anything that shoots something, even slingshots. Growing up in a farm town, it was never an issue. I guess I'm just pessimistic.

That said, your reply reminded me that I once broke up a 6" slab of concrete with a sledge, and that was LOUD. It took hours, and nobody complained. Heck, if the neighbor can rev his Harley, I should try and shoot in my back yard. I received my 34 clone, so I'm itching to use it. I'll look into making a silent trap.
Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!

I'd start off slowly and be observant. You might also want to check your city laws. In my city it's completely legal with an NRA approved backstop. I think the main thing is to be sure nobody can really see what your doing. Out of sight out of mind. I did sound meter testing and these things really aren't much louder than a metal staple gun. They sound really loud when you are firing them, but a few feet back they are much quieter. I had my friend Dave shoot my gun one time and I was completely surprised how quiet it was with my ear not on the stock. It was ten times quieter than I thought it was.

People will get weird if they see you. I think the main thing is to not be seen. I have a 6' fence around my yard. You could look between the cracks, but that really does the job. It also provides a sound break. I do stop if my one neighbor is in her yard. I anticipate possible issues, but she only comes out smokes a cigarette and goes back in, not a big deal.

I use a silent trap made out of an old luggage case and have a double backstop behind that with a fence behind that.

Hmmm tell me if all of you are reading this the way that I am:

"9.32.070 Discharging air guns in city. || It is unlawful for any person to carry or use any air gun for the purpose of discharging or from which are or may be discharged bullets, shot or missiles of any kind within the city limits, except in licensed shooting galleries. (Prior code § 48.01.008)"

Seems pretty direct and easy to understand. Then, there's this:

9.32.140 Firearms—Use for certain purposes. || The provisions of the preceding section as to the use of firearms shall not apply to peace officers in the discharge of their official duties and using reasonable care, nor to persons using firearms in necessary self-defense, or in a careful manner for the purpose of destroying noxious animals upon land owned or occupied by them [my emphasis], nor to persons using the Sacramento Trap Shooting Range in Del Paso Park, nor to persons using the Mangan Rifle and Pistol Range, nor to persons using the shooting ranges at the California Army National Guard armories at 1013-58th Street, 3250 Meadowview Road, and 440 Arden Way, nor to gun/rifle ranges authorized and established pursuant to the comprehensive zoning ordinance of the city, nor to persons lawfully using such gun/rifle ranges. (Prior code § 26.01.022)

So, my take-away is that I can't target-shoot outside of my house or garage, but I can shoot the pigeons, or wild cats attacking pets. Am I totally off-base?

So, I'll make a silent trap and shoot in the garage, at a minimum, or in the back yard during noisy times and see if anyone complains.

Gand, I'm going to PM you about the luggage case trap. That sounds oddly wonderful. I think I have some scrap wood laying around I can use to make a box and fill with electrical putty, but using luggage just sounds so cool.
Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!
Post by: gandalfretlaw on January 15, 2013, 06:54:31 PM
I'm reading that the same way. You might read the entire section just to be sure. In my city laws it says it's illegal, but then a few lines down says that it's legal if done safely with an NRA approved backstop. I just went a bit overkill on the backstop part and should be fine.

Title: Re: nor cal shooters!!!
Post by: drewciferpike on January 15, 2013, 07:39:45 PM

do you actually live in the city limits of Sac. ? how about the county? not sure where the city limits are. but the area around Cal Expo I think is in the county. but don't hold me to that. next time I talk to my wife's nephew he was Sac. PD I'll ask him. besides I need to find out if he fixed his Dad's Benji 317 that was given to him by his Dad's older brother.   that's whats nice about living in ag zone. we can protect our livestock and fields from critters.

On a lighter note, I'll be moving to a rural area within a year, so I'll be able to shoot as much as I friggin' want!

We have 2acres but I have to be careful because of the livestock the neighbor behind me has. east of me has major road. north side front of house is the privet road we live on. I shoot to my west with the neighbor's permission.  I ask for their ok before I set up my back stop. I also told he could come by and shoot anytime.

I live in Alta and have a nice range on my property. We have almost 3 acres. It's legal to shoot firearms and air guns here. We stick to air guns though. We have a dedicated shooting range in our neighborhood for our firearms. Glad to there's other air gunners around. Everyone around here shoots firearms. Myself as well but Im really liking shooting pellets. The price is great and it has a nice challenge.

New to the forum, found this thread and figgered I would chime in.  I'm in Stockton, right smack in Mid Town on the Miracle Mile.  I shoot rats in the trees in my back yard all the time.  I just make sure I shoot in safe directions.

Always looking for someone to go shoot with, I only have pistols right now, a 1322 lightly modded, a Crosman Mark I and a vintage spanish made target pistol springer.

Drew, if you're in Linden, *(&^ we should get together and shoot!  15 minutes drive is not bad at all!

Totally! We just moved here, and we're working on the house, so once things calm down, we'll definitely have to shoot!

Also, I'm organizing a night hunt for rats at a rice dryer near Williams. We'll probably get the green light in a few weeks. PM me with your e-mail address if you want to get updates!

If he never shot it, or if he lubed it with too much, dieseling can be expected. But--BUT!--if it's detonating, that's totally different, and not good. If you're just getting some light whisps of smoke out of the barrel, or out of the breech when you break it open right after a shot, or if you smell a little bit of smoke, you're OK. If you feel like you're in the revolutionary war, then there's problems. My tuned rifle oozed smoke for a while (200+ pellets), then settled into a beautiful groove.

Big time dieseling would be pretty loud too.  Conventional wisdom says to shoot heavy pellets until excess lube burns off and it settles down.

How many pellets do you have thru it?

Bone collector's are interesting guns...  They are the lightest darn things available in break barrel.  i took off a bunch of the stock on mine and am lookin for a >7oz optic to complete a 5 pound 1000+ fps break barrel "carbine"

btw i love the gas piston.  the exit wounds in this 3/4 inch OSB are devastating ;)  ...and redwood fence boards, they don't want none!

I enjoy the light weight!  I actually took the recoild pad off and detached the poly stock sidepanels to whittle a few ounces off for a while! But if I was going to pack the stock, I'd put in 50ft of paracord, a small folding knife, a lighter, and a first aid kit!  because..... why not!

I still only shoot in the backyard with my .25 Sumatra, .22 RWS 350M, QB79 etc. But now I've got a Sam Yang 909s and even with moderator, that thing is fureaking loud! Can't shoot in backyard.

What kills me is I'm a just a spit and go by from open grasslands, and even marshes along the Sacramento, San Pablo Bay and the Napa River.  Trouble is I can't seem to find the time to find access or get permission to any of these open lands, most of which are most likely privately owned.  When I was a kid, I'd just grab my pellet gun and head for the railroad tracks and the woods.

I suppose my next best bet is the foothills, though that will be quite a haul to go do some shooting.

Range across the river is closed till who knows when.

Whine, whine, moan and groan. :'(
