Title: Chrony selection
Post by: Spark Master on August 15, 2017, 11:41:14 AM
Hi All,

It took me forever to get an AR as I wanted to buy something reasonable, but for every vote of confidence there was a corresponding death rattle for that gun.

Now I want a chrony, and again I am struck with the confusion I see between all of them. I do not have a smart phone I am avoiding it like the plague, and Lone Star Ticks.

So is there a primer on them, suggestions clear info that helps make a choice.  Can I spend a hundred bucks and get something that is accurate and easy to use, or am I getting stuck with a unit with a little black plastic case that you need to cycle through 2 buttons to get a read out on a tiny black dongle, or if you want to actually see it , you need a smart phone?

People who shoot firearms don't find much need for them, (the ones I have spoken to say they are ok , but so rarely used they are not worth the investment, they borrow from a friend or their club), Air Gunners seem to like them a lot and is because they are always tweaking, or rebuilding.

I don't know

I am confused.

thanks

Thanks

As you seem to have figured out on your own, a chronograph is more a nicety than a necessity.  They don't tell you WHAT is wrong with your gun, only that the velocity is not quite right.

I purchased the Chrony brand Master series because it has a readout which can be removed and used to control the chronograph from the bench.  It is finicky when it comes to lighting but I've learned to work with it.  The big plus comes because of the horror stories I've heard from people shooting there chronographs.  (No, I haven't.)

From what I've read the Competition Electronics Pro Chrono is probably the best and you can purchase or make adapters to control it remotely.  It does have a readout built in.

The Caldwell rates very highly and is perhaps the best value.  I do not know if it has a readout attached or if you MUST use a smart phone or tablet.  It is possible to get a cheap smart phone but never have it enabled as your phone.  You CAN just use it for the Blutooth.  You may also use it on the internet without having it activated.
