Just became a new owner of a Silver Kodiak x2, (again)! ;D
My Walmart was having a closeout and these were marked down to $74. Nailed the last one.
Had one in the past, had good luck with it too, but had to sell when we moved.
Wonder if they make a wooden stock for them?
Can't wait to try it!!
-
I bought one at a pawn shop a few months ago. I just wanted the barrels. I gave the rest of it to a bud who's friend needed the trigger assembly. The first pellet gun I bought in December 2012 to learn to shoot left hand was a Beeman RS2 dual cal. from Walmart.
I hadn't shot it in a long time so decided to experiment. To keep from having to re-zero after changing barrels I mounted 4x32 pistol scopes just in front of the stock and barrel blocks. Tried scout scopes but the eye relief was to short then changed to pistol scopes. I used 4 rail, 5 notch accessory barrel mounts.
Scopes hit the front of the stock so I cut 3 inches off and sanded and painted the stock black. To get the eye relief just right I cut some off the back of the stock and put on a slip over butt pad.
Later a 45 degree red dot sight to the side of the scope and bi-pod I can use for either barrel.
I got the silver barrels to use with regular scopes and put some flip up open sight on on the gun. Smaller access. barrel mounts for the front sights just in front of the barrel block.
Silver barrels were a hair loose till I put breach seals around the skinny back part of the barrels. Snugged them right up.
It all works pretty good and it's all in one big soft case. Fun stuff with an old gun I didn't shoot much. Shoot it all the time now with all the barrels and different sights.
-
Wow,sounds like you had some fun. It's nice when our experiments come out good.
Did you try any across a chronograph?
I'm hoping for the best with mine, like last time. Some say getting a good one is kind of hit or miss. May have to do the lube, tune, deburr.
You have a very nice stable going, there! ;D
-
I saw them marked down at my Walmart as well. Really thought long and hard about it but I don't NEED another.
Although it would be nice to have one to keep .22 to go along with my 177. Haven't put the .22 barrel back in mine since the first week I had it.
Just too darn fun the way it is.
BUT the $35 1377 is really tuggin at my wallet. ;)
-
I wondered if I could take some pawn shop RS2 barrels and have them bored out and re-rifled to .20 and .25. Guys told me there's not enough steel. China Beeman should make one with all four cals. in a nice soft case. People might say it wouldn't sale. They have sold a bunch of the dual cal. .177/.22's! Or a dual cal. .20/.25. Maybe .25/.30? What! Never.
But I like weird guns. I have a Beeman double barrel .177/.22.( The one you can shoot the barrels individually. ) I also have a Hammerli X2 dual cal made by Mendoza and a couple of Mendoza break barrel repeaters as well as a Swarm.
Toys, fun stuff. Later
-
Awesome stuff! I would think those barrels are worth trying.
Have either of you ever done any trigger adjustments?
I see there is a tiny screw in the front of the trigger, and a larger one in back that's accessible through the trigger guard. The big one in back seems to be the one everyone adjusts, but what is the small one for?
my first was set up for .22, and stayed that way. Never tried trigger adjusting.
1377 for $35?
-
Do a search for "mystery trigger".
I don't know how it got that name other than it is not a classic RS-2 but there are a couple good write-up about here on GTA.
Yep...$35

Scott,
Thank you for that,I did find it! Kind of a bummer so many pictures are lost, but I got the information I need1 ;)

The tiny screw in front adjusts the travel before it breaks. The rear one just adjusts tension. If you adjust the travel screw too close it can bump fire.
-
As much power as is there, I don't want any bump fire!! Good to be carefull
This is good information.
Thanks
-
Shot the Kodiak today. The scope rings aren't worth much. Lots of power there. ;D
And Scott, that 1377 for $35?
I saw an old manual cocking today at a flea market. Rust and all. They wanted $60!

On the RS2 I did the mods on and have all the barrels for I lucked up on the trigger. The little front screw I screwed in all the way plus a little below flush. The big back screw I took out then put some thread lock on it and screwed it back in just enough it wouldn't fall out. Now there's no stage 1, which I prefer, and the trigger pull measures around 2.5 lbs but feels less and breaks easy and smooth. I like it.
But the same adjustment on my Beeman double barrel and Mach 12.5, with similar triggers, didn't work as well.

I hope to experiment with those screws tomorrow at the range. Got better scope rings on it now, have to sight it in again. ;D
Thanks, Tim

UPDATE
Shot her again today, scope no longer moving. Adjusted those screws, much like you Tim. My rear screw was almost falling out when I started, so just thread locked it.
Stopped dieseling.
Tried some different pellets. I found that RWS Supers you have to "snap" into the chamber with a Bic pen. Doesn't seem to like that.
Any that snap in shoot all over. Tried some basic pointed Crosmans that you just pushed in with your fingertip. They worked better, shot tighter.
Then tried some Beeman pellets that were hanging around.
Silver Bears were fingertip and worked good.
Crow Magnum are Super accurate!!!
Now I'm hitting bulls.
My friend uses the little colored yard sale dots (5/8" dia.) and we are shooting 25 yards. And my rifle hits these! My friend is running to Walmart, hopes to buy a Silver Kodiak now.
Can't wait to shoot again. Want to try the Crosman Premiers.
What does YOUR Silver Kodiak like??
-
177
CPHP, RWS Superdomes, and believe it of not, the cheap Beeman wadcutters.

Mine is really picky, so far I've only really found the stuff it likes in .22 and it's JSB or Air Arms.
Also about that travel screw, I set mine until it it's right in front of the "hump" of the pseudo-second stage. Kind of hard to describe what I mean. Then I just use a rubber mallet to whack the end to make sure it doesn't bump fire. Got it down to about a 1/4" pull. I think these triggers are slightly different from the RS2 ones from what I've seen, they're a lot more similar to a Gamo 440 or a B19 trigger setup. You can get things even smoother if you polish and moly the sear surfaces.
Wish I had some money on hand I'd go pick up another one, mine has been a pretty decent gun. Doesn't shoot the groups I want but it's great for plinking and pesting.

Do your RWS Superdomes go in hard? Strange they don't work good in mine...

check your Walmart! Mine was $74!!

Gonna make me dig it out arn't you?
OK.. I suppose.
(any excuse to shoot).
Not the head....but the skirt fits very snug. Need to make sure it's seated with my thumb before I close it.
But at some point I labeled this tin "Kodiak 2". I know it was over the winter shooting 10M indoor match. Meisterkugln wadcutters would have been #1.
I brought her out and shot this group of 5 straight from the case.
-
I was going to say sorry for making you dig it out..... but WOW! That is a beauty! What wonderful paint!
Yes, the head goes in fine, but if just using my fingertip, mine won't seat, and the skirt gets crushed when closing the breech. I tried using a Bic pen figuring also they would all seat the same depth. However, they go in with a snap. We're talking a 5" pattern.
The others are fine with fingertip, and especially the Beeman Crow Mags.
Thanks, and that is beautiful!
-
What yard range is that group, Hoosier Daddy? You say anything over 20, and I hate you... lol ;D
I had the same experience with the Superdomes skirt. Crosman Premier Pointed pellets don't shoot terribly bad in the .22 but lots of flyers. In the .177 the Crosman Premier Hollow Points shoot about just as good. For me "good" is 1" at 25 yards.

Put that away or you'll make it snow.

Thanks to Brother Ed, AKA: Shadow here on GTA. His airbrushed stocks are all a work of art. He put the lipstick on this pig and it is tough as NAILS!

You're gonna hate me... 25 measured, but on a front bag rest. ;D
Speaking of front bag rest. Put the stock on the bag right where the forearm checkering divides with the solid diagonal line. She will almost "teeter" there.
Here goes IF you are right handed shooter....
No left hand, put it under your right armpit.
Right hand on the trigger but don't wrap the thumb around. Leave it in line with the index (trigger) finger.
Minimal creek weld and let her walk.
That's my take on the "Artillery Hold"
And it ain't even Christmas time....
Put that away or you'll make it snow.
It is SO cool to take out in the snow when I can't shoot CO2!!! ;)
-
Hoosier Momma just got home and says "Oh, you got out the purdy gun tonight!"
8) ;D
You did see Bill, you can get a NEW Howitzer at Wallyword for $75 now... right?
-
I was reading some of the earlier posts about tuning these, and trigger work, and thought Bill had one? Now I look,I don't see it in your line up??
Did you part with it?
I called the Walmart where I got mine, no more coming in. The Walmart south of here has not discounted.
Now I read they are coming out with a gas ram and wood stock; still nickel plated. Looks sharp.
-
Bill sold "Howitzer" a while back. That is why I was prodding him.
...and why mine is called "Howie"
-
Yep.... the Howitzer is gone...
-
It's fuzzy but it's coming back to me now.... The X2 sold with the Black Ops block and barrel on it and the Black Ops sold with the dual setup on it.
-
I would guess that co-workers have about 20 of my guns now.
-
Looks like you still have enough to keep busy, and
"Vintage too many to list" LOL
I've been trying to part with some on the classifieds, but get no interest. all in good time..
-
The current guns and prices on the market now make it so folks can buy new for what we have to get out of our used. I have a couple guns listed that I would have walked 20 miles, slapped my grandma and kissed a rattlesnake right on the mouth for a year or so ago.
-
Yep you got that right. I was telling Scott I saw a 1377 (old rear cocker) at a flea market. The gun wouldn't budge on a $60 price tag, and the rust was included. Would have needed a complete overhaul.
Scott was talking about a $35 dollar 1377 ;D
Time for some zzzzzzzzzzzzz wife's turning my lights out!
I'll be shooting that Kodiak in my dreams!
Take care

Well seems like we have found the same "sweet-spot" as far as balancing it goes. I'll have to try holding the trigger like you suggested. Maybe less cheek-weld.
This is one hold-sensitive spud gun

SagaciousKJB,
Following along on your tear down process, also reading people having main springs break. Wondering if a few coils cut from the spring; bring it down say to shooting in the 900's(.177) would be worth it??

Well, in my limited experience, I don't think it would be. Reason being is I didn't feel a big level of difference between the older spring and the new one. I haven't had a lot of opportunity to shoot the new one comparatively but yeah, it just didn't seem like it made much difference in the control and feel of the shot cycle.
As far as velocity goes... Well that's where I'm not sure what to say. Mine is shooting in about the 850s right now with .177, 660s with .22, but when I tested these it was during one very hot week where the temperatures were always 85-95 so I'm not sure how much the hot air reduced the numbers I should have seen. I have seen other figures from other members that suggest the low 900s is where you're gonna be at anyway.
-
Hoping mine is just going to settle in and behave itself....and don't break!lol Has stopped dieseling.
Thanks
-
I have literally run a thousand rounds through mine.
Had to retighten screws more than I care to think... but... It gets better with break-in.
Tonight I shot my "new" Maximus and in all honesty, the Kodiaks patterns last night were MUCH better
-
That sounds great, but I have to ask, are the internals still stock from buying it,or did you do a lube tune or anything? Perhaps I worry too much.
Certainly sounds like it's shooting good!
By the way what are you running for a scope? Looks great with that paint.
-
Mine got left cocked for weeks on end , when I borrowed it to my mother. Settled it in nice, not that is the prefered method of tunning , I got lucky , so far :-X

Maybe that's why I got my spring compressed, I have left it cocked for long periods at a time more often than I can count.
I had an accidental dry-fire today ( pellet fell out as I closed the barrel ) and then the gun started grinding on the cocking-cycle. :/ Kind of sad because right before that I sighted it in and shot a penny-sized group at 20 yards. Figures as soon as I start catching up to Hoosier Dadddy I'd break it :P
Have you had a chance to try your .22 barrel?

Haven't done a thing internally, or to the trigger. It was my first springer and I didn't want to open it up for fear I'd break it. As for now I don't see a need.
The scope is a Simmons 22Mag 3-9x/32mm A/O

Bought a TF89 at a pawn shop a few years ago and it shot ok but kick hard as a mule. Cocked it, put it in a closet and forgot about it. Four months later took it out. It didn't loose one FPS and still kicked like a mule and still does.

Gonna need sandpaper, JB Weld and elbow grease! But it should be fixable.
I think mine started losing power and sounding different at about 4-5k shots and that's when I did the lube-tune.
They have a really strange sound to them once they quit diseling. I guess it's the spring twang, sounds like an as asthmatic duck. I may try a spring sleeve.
-
Mine literally sounds like muffled "Twoink" deadened in plastic.. Not a "Twang"
-

Yep that sounds about right lol I hate that sound!
But overall they're pretty nice guns. I'm wondering if their new "Dual" that has a .177/.22 over/under configuration is based on the same platform.
-
I don't think so... they are kinda weird.
One version shoots one or the other "selective", while the other (more common) shoots BOTH at once.
Gotta do your home work on that one before you buy...
-
Keep an eye on the set screw that holds the barrel in. It likes to back out even with Loctite. I found Teflon tape to work a bit better.
-
That comes under"always check yours screws" the springer song! lol
"my has always claimed I had a screw loose"...........
-
I just solved my problem with the RWS Super Domes going in hard(with a snap).
Under close inspection, I found there was hardly any chamfer around that chamber. More of a burr.
Dug around and found a small center drill (#3) and turned it back and forth just using my fingers.
Kept trying a Super Dome pellet until it went in the way I wanted.
Now I need a chance to try them out again! ;D
-
I always open/polish the pellet lead in when doing a home tune on a boinger.
-
Great news Wendell!
Now that you and Bill mention it, I have some sanding cones and an arbor. I can think of a couple I could dress up a little
-
I do them just like a crown...Maybe not so deep. Seen Mike Mellick do it on his full tune.
-
No chance to try her out yet.... getting a new place to live nailed down. Lots to do!
