Title: AGD and AGN "The Long Rangers" competition, who's doing it?
Post by: Bizill on August 06, 2017, 02:37:15 AM
This should probably be placed in the Long Range Club sub-forum but I don't think much traffic occurs there so I'll post it up here to show how accurate the Taipan can be.

I'm not sure if many of you venture over to AGN but they are teamed up with AGD for their "The Long Rangers" competition where you have to hit a plastic golf ball supplied by Airgun Depot at 150 yards or more.  I decided to poke my nose into that thread and began posting there.  I couldn't just talk the talk, I knew I had to walk the walk so I decided to finally attempt this challenge.  And let me tell you, it isn't easy.

I opted to go all out and hit the golf ball at 200 yards.  I tried hard with JSB Kings 25.39 grain pellets but those crosswinds made mincemeat out of the lighter pellets out that far.  What the wind is doing from where you're taking your shot are not necessarily what's happening near your target.  So I jumped up to the 33.95gr JSB's and the Taipan began to shine.

Anyone else going to get in on this challenge?  I think Hajimoto posts here on GTA and TheLakeRat I believe does as well.  Any others?  Anyway, here is my video of hitting the GB @ 202 yards...

https://youtu.be/fsqCV6GN4T8

Here we go again with not being able to imbed vids.  Am I trippin'.  Is there a secret?  You used to be able to just remove the "s" in "https"...please help.

I have been watching the challenge since they started, balls ordered yesterday :D  Never shot the Veteran out past 150 yards so it should be interesting.

It looks fun but I don't have that kind off space to shoot without a considerable drive.  I'm sure it isn't complete lack of talent, no that isn't it.  8) :o

I felt pretty good about my "ability" and was going to take all the credit for the shot, and give none to the gun, until Bazill made it look too easy with his Veteran.  No pressure though!

"plastic golf ball supplied by Airgun Depot"? Unfortunately they have astronimical freight cost to Finland, otherwise I could of try up to 300 meters. Or maybe I could print the same size ball by plastic printer if I know the excact size and you can accept it that way.

Ok, I watched the video and know its their callence and not this forum's. I think I'm off the competition due to freight cost. That is not reasonable.

I believe this challenge is mostly directed toward USA.  There is a drawing for an Impact being held for qualifiers.

Don't let that video fool you.  I was out for hours messing around in the wind with 25.39 JSB's.  That wind just makes or breaks you.  I can't tell you how many takes I did having to fix this or that or other problems like stepping on a piece of cholla cactus wearing my flip flops.  So many times I re-watched my fail videos and found myself saying I should just step up to the JSB heavies 33.95 grain.   Lo and behold I finally do and BAAM.  That poor ball didn't stand a chance!

Yeah, I want to be entered into a drawing but by the end of August there will be so many entries that my chances of winning will diminish entirely I believe.  What I did want to do is show off the Taipan to potential owners.

Well I believe so too but it would of been nice to participate just for fun. Believe me, we are not fooled by any video, we have been shooting 300 meters regularly already for years every summer.  :D

If regular golf balls will do (they'll show the hit when they zing off) I have plenty of those. Just pop in and I'll give you few.

So for those who don't care to do their challenge their way, do it here and post in my thread.  I love watching others film as they accomplish this.  Those across the pond, I'd love to watch it as well.  I don't wish to arbitrarily watch strangers hit golf balls that may or not be posted on youtube unless we have a common bond.  At the moment the bond is follow posters on these airgun online forums.  Without that connection, I could care less what others do.

So TPL, set her up and post it here.  I'm probably not gonna win any drawing so I did the challenge just to do it.  I see no harm in you doing it for the same reason so let's start our own little challenge here, if you would like.  I'd love to see your skills put to video.  Use a regular golf ball and allow me to enjoy watching you do the same as I did, thousands of miles away!

Yes rkr, if you have some extra, please bring those to next competition. I don't know when there is time to try but I would like to. Maybe after competition. Then I guess I must bring my target cam with me and range finder as well...  :D If there will be no stormy wind then.

Definitely have to get lucky with your weather.  Yesterday there were small gusts of up to 10mph but today at the same time it is a complete standstill!  Today would have much better for me, even with the 25.39 jsb's.

On that range wind is whirly and usually changes direction all the time. Bullet up to 300 m is on air about 1.15 second so the wind may change even direction completely during that time. It will not be an easy one but that just makes it interesting. It is a small target that far and I'm not saying anything beforehand. But certainly like to try.

328 yards?  What caliber?  FPS?  What air rifle?  I'd love to see this.

328 yards. .308 Corsair. FPS something like 1000, maybe little less. As you well understand I cannot promise anything to see but I can try. Depends a lot on weather. We have been shooting 12 oz. cans out of 300 regularly but this is much smaller target.

If a person wanted to make some for informal practice, I wonder if you could just put a small hole in a ping-pong ball and put in some baby powder or similar?  You might have to glue it to a stick or golf tee so it doesn't blow away.   Or...shoot a big sucker. :-)
Title: Re: AGD and AGN "The Long Rangers" competition, who's doing it?

Yes Mark, practice all you want.  Here's the thread over at AGN:  http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/airgun-depots-long-rangers/ (http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/airgun-depots-long-rangers/)

They give until the end of August.  There are some that are going for 150 with break barrel but we'll see how well that pans out.  But you do have to use an Airgun Depot provided ball for the actual video to qualify and get your vid posted on their site and be entered into the drawing.  Already there are some "bending" the rules.  So long as AGD weeds out the fakes vs legitimate vids then it's all good.  You don't have to be a member of AGN as this is set up by AGD and anyone can submit a vid so long as they meet the posted criteria.

TPL, I have no doubt you can do it.  It may take a few more shots but a golf ball isn't THAT much smaller and if you're hitting cans, then you can easily hit a golf ball.  Just how many shots?  It doesn't matter, so long as you hit it and get it on video.

Looks like I won't be able to go past 222 yards as I'll run out of mildots.  Here is where I ended up with Strelok Pro when I took my 202 yard shot.  Notice above that the elevation turret is maxed out at 13 mils or 130 clicks and I still had to use 5 1/2 mildot holdover and an holdover for wind.  This is with built in 20moa rail in my Taipan Veteran.  I could guesstimate holdover just a bit but doubt I'll get out to 230 yards without new adjustable rings.  I think I'll be taking a seat on this one.  202 is good enough for me.

I had to fudge with my ballistic co-efficient out that far in strelok to get this to be accurate to the shot I took.  The parameters I fed Strelok at first had me way off at 200 yards.  I'm glad I did this challenge though as it's given me data to feed into Strelok Pro to be more accurate at all ranges.  Wind was higher than what my pic below shows as I had turned my windage turrets some and then accounted for wind on the fly with holdover beside the windage clicks.  I estimate the wind to have been at 6-7 mph when I took the shot.  Wind came in about the 10 o'clock position.

I think I know another reason I couldn’t hit jack squat with my 25.39 JSB’s. They’re flying at 927fps. But I recall hearing them make like a oscillating “whrrrr’ing” type of sound which I would imagine would be synonymous with pellet spiraling. Anyone have any experience in this?

Never satisfied I had to go back out today and hit a bit longer.  I'll be making a video of it hopefully tonight.  I did already get m yard patch and sticker.

Can't wait to see that 250 shot.  My golf balls were delivered today (I think) and as soon as I can make it back home, hopefully before the end of the month, I will be giving it a go.

250 yards today.  I drove 35 miles and 3/4 of the way to my shooting spot I realized I forgot my AGD golf ball.  Drove all the way home, got back out to the desert and realized I had forgotten my Caldwell Fieldpod Magnum so I had to shoot of my bipod.

I still have a few more yards I guess I could squeeze out of it but not much.  I do notice that airgun depot isn't so quick anymore to update their leaderboard.  You've gotta understand, they don't sell Taipan but do sell FX so I think they might just be a bit reluctant to place me in the lead.  Oh well.  I'm sure they will.  I guess.

I've got 3 extra but I'm in AZ.  They will become relics as I don't want to waste time going out any further than 250 yards with my setup.  If I bought adjustable rings then I'd be back in the game but I'm not into spending money on something that'll be one-time use.  I could get 3 family members and have them shoot the balls and tilt the odds in my favor to win the drawing but I don't roll that way.  I think it's pretty shady to do that and most have.

I posted this on another thread - but here is the full story of the 350 Yard Shot and my early (rocky - yet successful) relationship with my Texan .357....

Well its been a fun month of learning a ton from you all and proud to say I have hit all of the AirGunDepot.com Long Ranger yardage shots from the 150 yard (Hole-in-One First Shot - Talon SS) - 175 yard (it took 86 shots - Talon SS) - 200 yards (Another Hole-in-One First Shot - Texan .357)!  I am also proud that as of 2 days ago I hit a 350 yard shot with my  Texan .357!  Still waiting for AGD to approve the shot and update the leaderboard to put me in the top position (hopefully). During this time, I have learned a lot about my Texan .357 and what ammo it likes, what is doesn't like, where it excels, and what are it's challenges.  I posted this over at airgunnation.com, but though it would be good to post here as well:

Someone asked how I was able to tame the Texan since I had only owned it for 2 weeks to make that 350 yard shot. So how did I pull this all together in a short amount of time?  Pure obsession and a crazy amount of networking within the airgun community.  It is the spirit of shared knowledge that made this 350 yard shot possible.  I just absorbed as much info from all the subject matter experts that I could – lined up the cross hairs and squeezed the trigger.  Thank you to you all!

As far as learning about the .357 Texan – I have been chatting with Jimmy (the guy who won the AGD Texan Give Away) and learned a lot from him.  Through Jimmy I met Nick Neilson of Neilson Specialty Ammo who has been on a war path about the harmonics and twist rate concerns he has about the Airforce Texan series.  Learned A TON from his posts on other forums and hypothesized what tweaks I needed to make even before the rifle arrived.  From that info I was able to reverse engineered (at least some) of what the folks over at Hunters Supply are doing in their tuning services to turn the Texan to a real long range rifle.  It was from Hunters Supply photo and video research that I realized that this barrel was going to need some major harmonics and rigidity help (thus the de-resonator donut and homemade ABS plastic shroud).  See the 200 yard shot video to see what my DIY shroud consists of.

Then finally the introduction to Al Clark, the GENIUS behind Aeromagnum Ammo and the 128 gr. Devastator Hollow Point, is what really made this all possible. If you haven’t seen his rounds in person – words can’t describe….  Order a box and you will see what I mean.  Just for giggles – I am going for 400 Yards before the end of the challenge.  Just need to find a stretch of land as I am out of safe yardage where I have been shooting. So yes – it was a busy 2 weeks to make this shot.  But it has been a fun learning process!  Here are my video submissions so far from furthest to shortest:

https://youtu.be/PBzvrFgbksE

https://youtu.be/CZne4L_xio0

https://youtu.be/iFPYSB239S0

https://youtu.be/n26fZhZVmvY

...and lastly, here was my response to a few forum trolls who were doubting I actually hit that 150 yard shot because of the weird angle the ball flew up when it was hit by the pellet.  Watch to the very end for some anti-forum troll humor.

Holy Smokes, I did it.  No 350, but (*edit after measuring with a tape) 480' = 160 yards w/ a stock out of the box Impact .30.

I have a plat in DXF and according to my CAD system it's 170 yards.  I paced it off and got 160 paces.  When wifey gets home I'll take an official measurement with a 100' tape, but I'm clearly past the contest minimum.

I can probably get another 10-15yds by moving the target into the treeline and me out to the road's edge, but that's about it on my property.

I did not have an exploding golf ball and it won't be here until Wednesday at the earliest, so I did like Greggers did and filled a plastic egg with baby powder.  I probably have to repeat this w/ a real exploding AGD ball to get entered for an impact, but I'm in the zone now.

My first shot was at 6 holdover was still in the dirt so I moved up to the very limits of the scope and that still wasn't enough so had to move my zero about ten clicks up to get the bottom holdover on the bull.  At first I went 20 clicks and that was too far.
Took me about 10 shots to get zeroed in.

My vid is from start of sighting in to walking up to inspect the busted egg, so I've got some editing to do.

It was fun!

**edit, here's the vid
 https://youtu.be/kn8UkD7hGP4

*edit
Measured with wifey's help.  Today's shot was at 160 yards.  When I get the official exploding ball I'll do a little extra w/ the target in the treeline and table on the road, 520'.

Finally made it home to take part in the challenge.  The winds from the hurricane weren't that bad but were coming from my 5 o'clock and a little gusty.  Got everything set up at daylight before the rain started. I was hoping for a little more time to get some shots at a little farther distances but it didn't happen so 150 yards is gonna have to do.

No its not. Its actually mounds of dead grass.  Its stays wet so the guy has to wait a long time between cuts.
