I just wanted to report what others probably already have. I've been shooting JSBs out of my Maximus and decided to try the Crosman HP's from Walmart. To my surprise, they seeem to shoot as well or better than the expensive JSB's and for $6.49 per 500, that's really cheap shooting. Granted, that's only one Maximus but if you have one, it might be worth your while to give it a try. We were shooting water bottles consistently at a measured 75 yards and even stretched it out to 100 with almost the same consistency (provided there's no wind). I'm getting 30+ good shots with a Gen2 spring from Discos-r-us. It's not a powerhouse but will solve most pest issues out to 30 yards. Beyond that, I have my .25. I don't have a chronograph so I don't know the exact fps, but it's enough for good accuracy at somewhat extended distances. I really like my Maximus!
-
I have one in .177 and it likes the Crosman 10.5's the best so far. Accurate enough for me and the distances I shoot at. it is a fine light rifle for being as inexpensive as they are.
-
Ain't it nice to have an airgun that shoot cheap pellets where you aim it. My maximus hunter 22 main diet is 14.3 CPHP's and Benjamin 14.3 domes.
-
My Max .22 likes the WW CPHP's too. Shoot just as well as H&N FTT's.
-
My .22 Max loves the WW CPHP's as well :) Deadly accurate out to 40 yards all day long :)

My momma told me if I don't have something nice to say, don't say anything. :)

Just finished testing my Max .22 at 30 yards after having to work on the barrel... before it did not really like any thing: had a slightly off chamber and no leade... I tried my fav the Crosman domed 14.3 (just purchased) and some others... some did ok... but none did really well..
then I tried Benji Hollows and wow 3 really nice 5 shot groups... one (below)looked like a 3 shot cloverleaf .4" outside to outside...the other two just slightly larger... picked those up about 2.5-3 years ago have about 2500 left... I then tried my Crosman 14.3 Hollow point stash (~3500) got another very impressive group... then next group a flier on me and maybe one not on me but still right at .5 ctc... then before I had to head down to town I tried the Crosman pointed just one hurried six shot group in which I think I caused the horizontal spread but they look to be about .5" probably...jury is still out on them
Still have a few to test and need to pick up some JSB .22... need to retest copper mags... have some older 14.3g domed to try...also have a few 21g Cudas and Kodiak... also will have to see how it does when thing are stretched out there soon...but need to put a better scope on for that...
so far I am amazed this is the first time the hollow point have shot like this... it is usually the domes that shoot slightly better with my little 1322 carbine collection... heck even the Remminton domes out did the .22 CPUM.. :o :o :o
I am just jazzed the barrel was fixable...
was using a 16$ Tasco 3-7x20 and have a bit of a floater that is clearing up.
only put a softer spring behind the trigger... still a bit to heavy but better and predictable... Barrel port had a loose fit for a .125" drill bit so opened the valve exhaust and t-port to .125" those and fixing the chamber/leade/tight spot are it for mods
-
lot of bang for an 86 buck Wally World clearance(return?) rifle ;D ;D ;D
the high left shot on bottom left target was a super dome forgot to draw line to it after stopping when neighbor came over.. :-[
-
Mine maximus loves the 14.3 CPHP.. and that price is fantastic. Mine witj put them pellet on pellet out to about 40 yards. Sub dime size groups at 30
-
oops forgot one more mod... when the barrel was tight I broke the bolt handle loading a copper mag... so instead of stealing the bolt handle from one of my 13xxs... I had read a recent tip that one of my archery points would work after shortening the threads a bit... Thanks GTA.. ;D
-
For the most part my Maxi shoots the CPHP's as well as as the RWS Superdomes, H&N FTT's, and the JSB 18g Heavies.
Just the occasional flyer from pellet inconsistencies seem to show up with them (CPHP) more.
But for the price and availability, it will be fed a lot more of them. ;)
-
I'm still trying to get rid of the tin of Crosman 14.3g piranha pellets that shipped with my Max, they do okay, but it seems there's always one pellet out of 5 that wants to explore the outer regions of the target! I've not played much with the CPCP's, I may have to pull out a tin and spend some more time with them. Thanks of the tip!
-
Tried sizing the .22 CPUM and .22 Crosman Copper Mags by pushing them thru my .220 NOE insert... No joy...
It is so weird to me that the Hollow points are so much more accurate... it has in every other case been the opposite result from 450 fps to 800...
Do have a tin of the sharp tooths will have to give them a try...not holdin my breath tho...
-
Paul,
I can't get a Crorman Piranha to shoot well out of anything.
I think that is P/A gives them away...That is how I got my tin as well.

Because no one will actually purchase them! Before I knew better, I got a tin from Walmart because they sent them instead of the hollow points. I looked on-line and saw Walmart was charging $2.00 more for the Piranhas than they were the hollow points, and thought, wow I got a deal! Now I know I was snookered! I won't fall for that again!

I too fell (once and only once) for the Piranha's. I found they were nowhere consistent enough even for plinking. That being said, I do find the CPHP and the CPUM to be very consistent. Alas being in Canada I pay $15 for the CPUM and $13 for the CPHP. :o

You mean you have to pay $13 for what I pay $6.49 for in the states? That's a little extreme isn't it?

I can testified this...... It is HORRIBLE when you guys in the States are telling us what are the price you pay for..... ;)
-
This is a previous post of my results.
The results were very close for me for me with JSB or the CPHP.
I tried the 14.3 CPHP from wally World and the 18.13 JSB Exacts.
The accuracy between the two were to close to call, even with the jsbs giving a few more consistent fps shots. If I want to pay double the price and get shipped only to get just a little more FPEs, Ill get the JSBs. The CPHP 14.3 gives a little less FPE and I can get them anywhere. The over all accuracy was very close from start of the shot string to the end.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shots made at 25 yards starting at 2000psi shot down to 1000 psi. Both strings came out to be 22cphp to 23jsb shots.
The JSB 18.1 started at 745.1 fps. The max fps reached was 795.7 fps around 1500psi range. Everything else in the high range stayed in the high 760s to 770s. The795.7 shot was the only shot that high. Final shot was around 1000psi at 733.5fps.
The sweet spot was around 1700 to 1100psi.
16 shots
High at 795fps
Low at 753.8 last shot of sweet spot at 1100psi
Ave 768.18fps
Giving an average 23.76FPE.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now the Crosmans
The CPHP 14.3 started at 827.2 fps. The max fps reached was 866.3 fps around 1800psi range. Everything else in the high range stayed in the high 850s to 860s. Final shot was around 1000psi at 803.7 shot 22.
The sweet spot was around 1800 to 1300psi.
12 shots
High at 866.3 fps
Low at 841.4 last shot of sweet spot at 1300psi
Ave 853.13 fps
Giving an average 23.12FPE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The JSBs did give me a more consistent fps and more shots (16) in the sweet spot, over all 23 shots in the fill. But I didnt loose any accuracy even with the looser fps spread over the entire 22 shots with only 12 shot count in the sweet spot of the cphp.
I had 16 shots Giving an average 23.76FPE with the JSBs
and 12 shots Giving an average 23.12FPE with the CPHP.
I think I will stay with the CPHPs for the money. The fps variance may be more but the accuracy stayed the same.
A few pics below.
Oh yea, my son who is still learning was very happy. He was able to hit a dime at 25 yards using the cphp. Made me very proud. ;D

Yes this is what it is like here. You don't even want to know the price of the air rifles (if we can even get them here.) I have a firearm lic so I own high powered air rifles (anything over 500 fps considered a firearm) but we can't get anything here that has a sound moderator. Earlier this year I purchased a Gamo Magnum on sale for $349 (regular price at Cabala's is $499.99) Even the low power stuff 495 fps is insane ie: BenjaminŽ Steel Eagle Jim Shockey Signature Series Air Rifle $369.99!
The Beeman QB Chief is on sale at $280 (normally $312)

You might have to make a road trip to Buffalo or Detroit.

Lol.😀 maybe. It would probably be closer to go to Sault St. Mare for me though.
-
I was surprised my CP-1M was one holing with Benjamin 14gr hp. Ordered some more, hopefully they perform the same.
"The Beeman QB Chief is on sale at $280 (normally $312)"
Thought I'd mention to a fellow Canadian that the beeman chief is on for $239 on Oshoot.ca. I think it may even be close to the American price with exchange rate adjustment, so pretty good for us lol!

I just can not bond with the stock... maybe the trigger being a bit to heavy is part of it feeling that way or maybe it is the ugly plastic tulip...
I am tempted to put on a 13xx pistol grip and skeleton stock.. ;)
but the truth is I like wood and metal and having grown up sending .22lr out of a Remmy 512 the Disco stock would almost be like an old friend if add a butt pad for length of pull...So eventually will probably go that direction...
have not matched the .4" outside to outside edge group again but am coming close most are .5"- .7" o.t.o... need to lighten the trigger just a bit more... it is almost to the point that it does not take that extra bit of concentration to keep from pulling it plus I tend to like time my shots... so with a little more work and the baker trigger I do think about .4 will be the norm at 30 yards...
Sent a lot of lead yesterday really trying to get to know it... still does not like the .22 CPUM... still loves the Disco hollows... does not like the Barracuda and Kodiak... pretty sure it's harmonics(two distinct groups)... It likes the Remington round nose almost as much as the Disco hollows... the Crosman pointed are neck and neck with the Remmy domes...at 25 yards the Remington hollows, the Daisy wads and Benji destroyer are .75" or just a touch better
The not so good PDG destroyers got a .75" group but the next two shotgunned to about 2"... RWS Superdome about 2"... Eun Jin domed 3"-4"... Beeman 15.2g domes did better than I thought they would since they are a bit like the RWS... but they actually did ~.5 and then a flyer out about 1.5".... did five groups and 3 had a flyer or two... they want to group but can not quite get there... I am guessing slowing things down would help them and the Superdome....
need to get another couple sizing inserts to try the BBT 30g...they are still to tight at to close the bolt...
Tried to use soft chrono but it is just to loud and to many echoes.. closest I could tell is CPHP 14.3 1020-1050 fps(35 fpe)... I do not think that is right..?
the only mods I did was to drill the valve exhaust port to .125 (looked to be about .110 stock) and to switch to a 13xx .140 transfer port...barrel was already a loose fit for a 1/8 drill bit...
just looked in the below thread it is stated that stock the valve is .110 and t-port is .120
http://airgunscanada.freeforums.net/thread/31/benjamin-maximus-transfer-port-modification?page=1 (http://airgunscanada.freeforums.net/thread/31/benjamin-maximus-transfer-port-modification?page=1)
and then Knifemaker in this thread got 942 fps JSB 18.1 =35+ fpe... with some porting but gave no specifics... he was also using a p.a. but as stiff as the stock spring is I am betting hammer strike is about the same...
https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=122088.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=122088.0)
so I guess it is a possibility... If so Wow I am really impressed with the 30 yard groups...
guess I need a real chrono... five shots does take me down to about 1750 psi
I wonder if the challenger p.a. is the right one to use... did a bit more spring squeeze on the trigger...hope the baker trigger helps cause it is just very slightly to heavy now... so if it trades a bit more travel for leverage it should be just about right...
-
Kirby, this struck me as a concern...you said
five shots does take me down to about 1750 psi
Maybe I misunderstood.
Mine LIKES to be below 1750psi. If I pump it up to 2000psi it is not as accurate for the first several shots, until it gets to it's 1700-1200 range... even down to 1000 psi. That is where I stop and pump it back up. Seems to have a sweet spot for accuracy at 1600psi.
That is the pressure regulator I bought to tether it to a bottle for longer shooting periods...
Have you shot your down at these lower pressures?
-
did you take down your Leade or is it still stock..? every Crosman barrel I have had just sharp edged rifling no leade... Mine had a really tight spot right at the leade due to a slightly miss cut chamber and I had to make the loosest leade I ever have to fix it...only the Eun Jin can you feel them seat the rest just chamber like they are not there...
That is the funny thing... Pump reads 2000 rifle reads 1900-1950psi... It seems poi is just barley higher at around 1500 psi... maybe it is the faster pellets are slowing down so much so quick that they do not impact high... drag really spikes at high transonic...
just wish I had another chono cause I am wondering... I have mostly been re-pumping at 1500 psi... but take it down to 1250 and it does not seem to much drop in poi but the sweet spot seems to be from 2000 psi to 1500...
guess I need to shoot a fill down and write down psi after every shot...
-
Is yours stock porting because with the valve being .110 and the t-port being .120 it might cause a good bit of turbulence/inconsistancy at the higher fill pressure..?
But then I am feeding a .140 t-port from ~ .125...
-
Mine is stock other than polishing the trigger contact points and a TKO
-
I found the specs on the porting.
The ports are .157" valve, tp, barrel. The actual valve is angled forward a bit to prevent hitting the valve wall, and the barrel port is ovaled.
I am a bit confused by the claims of accuracy there. Hitting water bottles at 50 yards. The Maximus can hit the "bottle tops" at 50 yards with proper pellets. Once you stretch the ranged out a bit, you will quickly find the limit of the Crosman HP's The JSB continue to be accurate all the way to 70-100 yards. Typical groups with the 18 gr. JSB's at 30 yards is under .25". The crosman's will give .75 with frequent flyers. I am not getting flyers with the JSB,s,. 16 or 18 gr.
For a bit of fun, (back to childhood with BB Guns), next time you're out, pick up a bag of little army men. Loads of fun at long range. Sorta like field artillery. LOL ;D
I am getting a good string at 940 with the JSB 18's and have backed them down to 880-890 fps. The Huma Reg. is doing a fine job.
I ordered a BNM Multi-Shot Breech for it last week. Very much looking forward to a Multi shot!!! ;)P.S. I found a way to make the Crosman piranhas accurate. I throw thiem into the casting pot along with all the other lead, and cast them into .257 80 gr. HP Bullets. Now they are accurate!!! ;D 8)

Hey Knife, I said bottles consistently at 75 yards, not 50. Also, remember that I put a much weaker spring in it so the grandkids could pull back the bolt. Yeah, the army men thing sounds like fun. Regards.

Glad you won the barrel lottery 😳 I didn't win the barrel lottery in 177😳 My gun was shooting all over the place😳😡 ordered another barrel. This time I won the barrel lottery 😎 Gun is a tack driver so far out to 30 yards 😎

Thanks Michael that is about what I thought would be needed to be hitting the mid 30fpe level...I figured the .125 would be good for somewhere around 950 fps with the 14.3... and that is hoping the valve exhaust throat(area behind poppet) is large enough to support that...which would be around .174"-.180" or so... do you remember/know what is was stock..?
I figure you had to open the throat up to .197"-.205" to support the rest of the porting..?
-
Man, I really don't. I remember a figure of around .112-114" but that may well have been the thru port. Both were small. REALLY small. LOL!!!
Was good on air though!
Thinking of a Cothran valve to go along with the Huma, and mod'n the valve and its anchor points for 3000 psi. I'm told it is hard to do without a mill.
But I just happen to have one. 8)

-
Must have been the thru/exhaust port, I measured that at .110"... could not have been the exhaust throat; the poppet shaft is .125" from what I have read... Have been looking at all the Maximus threads to try to find out but no one has posted what it is yet...
One of my favorite back yard 1985 Daisy 953 targets at 25- 30 yards is green army men...mostly can do head shots at 15-20 yards...
My favorite 50 yard targets are smelly when they are shot...My youngest daughter makes them and then we protect the town from
"THE ZOMBIE VAMPIER EGG HORDE"
-
I have in other threads talked about dad's Remmy 512... well with The Max I might be able to send the BBT 30g but I think... would rather start with the disco tube and maybe the Cothran or other modded/higher fpe valve...with a Maximus barrel...
It would be like Having a light air powered 512... got a nice stick of walnut might even make the stock... want about 35-45 fpe off a 2500-2700 psi fill..? for the BBT...
I mean if you take a look the stocks are very similar and so is the barrel length... so in the end that is what I want to build and there are better choices for a starting point than the max... But I did not have a .22 pcp yet so could not resist it... It does look that 28-35 fpe should be not to hard... I am still trying to figure out what it wants to be...
right now the heavies are probably running a bit slow to outrun the harmonics and velocity might help along with getting the barrel band/bands set up right...
right now I have been looking at the gap between the barrel and air tube... tis wider at the breech than the muzzle... I think that actually is worse for harmonics than semi floating... so that is the next thing I will be messing with...
I have heard that if you say " Plastic Schnabel Stock" three times while holdin your rifle it can become infested with haints.. ;)

I doubt many here know what a Haint is... glad my Grand-ma taught me many moons ago

well then you know what color my porch ceiling is...as was grandma's as was great grandma's

CPH group 25 yards
-
I see a typical CPHP flier on the group to the left. So I have to ask...
What was your POA with those two groups?
I suggest getting a tin of JSB 18g and see what happens at those ranges.
-
This was a 10 shot group I think... 25 yards. Sub dime

The bulleye above the group and now that you pointed that out they were not 25 yards. They were 35 or 40 yard groups . Jsb might have been better but I buy CPHP for 6 bucks for 500
-
Considerable hold over for the ranges you called out now with the JSB heavies.
BUT I agree for the cost of a tin of CPHP's my Maxi shoots 'em to Moment Of Squirrel.
