Decided to try the DIY route. I've owned a Beeman AR series QB rifle for about a year and a half now and it is a great rifle. After lots of internal work, barrel work and finding the right pellet it shoots very well. So I decided to condense that gun into a pistol.
I received the rifle this evening at 5pm Pacific, and decided to have some fun! I was done for the evening when my wife (who kicked my butt last weekend at Oregon State) got home from dinner with her friends from work at 8. I think I made some good progress!
As per the rules of PFT 3" is the max height in front of the trigger guard, so I had to chop the foregrip, and since it's a pistol I had to chop the butt stock. And now for the barrel, I chucked it in my mini 7x hobby lathe and had some fun. Unfortunately the barrel isn't concentric, but I'll try it anyways!
Stage one is complete:
Stock trimming and minor shaping.
Barrel cut, recrown and small deburring.
Next stage is valve work, hammer polishing and lightning.
I really hope it works out, the balance of this thing is superb!
Hope to post more soon.

Ten shot string with factory valve, new shorter barrel and factory transfer port at 800psi reg pressure gave me a low of 587 a high of 592 averaging at 6.1fpe.
I'll be adding plenum by removing the c02 components of the valve as well as cutting the valve body to where the spring cradle is. Next polishing the poppet, polishing all spring ends, hammer and bolt. Changing the transfer port and replacing the pass through bolt to add a probe. Also I hope to lighten up heavy factory hammer.
Hoping all these mods bring me up to 12 fpe.
Hope to get it there before my archery hunt this weekend, but that will take priority.
Have a great Tuesday!

Cameron,
That's pretty dang cool.
May need to follow suit on building something similar being my Airmax 700 is not really panning out as a competitive FT pistol.
Good luck as project continues ... be watching
-
Cameron, you have been a busy fabricator!
Didn't you build a new WFTF spring-piston rifle during your Saturday lunch break and then shoot it Sunday in Ione?
Good job, brother man!
Bob
-
Yes Bob! On Wednesday I decided I wanted to put a Vortek 12fpe kit and it arrived Friday night. Threw it in on Saturday morning, mounted a scope and ran a couple numbers for Sunday.
My numbers weren't perfect, luckily shooting WFTF I was shooting at 24x, I was able to memorize hits on the faceplate and adjust my clicks when necessary. Resulting in a lot of second shot hits. Trying to take note of my numbers and help new shooters at the same time proved a little difficult. Totally worth it, Manny and his son Matt have plans to continue the sport and purchase equipment!
Thanks for the interest and support! When I'm done you guys are more than welcome to play with it!
-
Young Matt was having a blast!
I have never seen a smile so big as when he rang the bell on the standing target!
Good job bringing those fellas to the party!!

After packing some for my trip I could help but play a little bit.
Removed unneeded portion of the valve body and picked up a couple CC'S after my reg. Removed the poppet and turned it to allow more air to pass by, made a pellet probe for the bolt, and polished all the internals.
Rechoked the barrel, crowned and lapped with JB bore paste.
Replace the factory screws with stronger ones, and replaced all factory orings.
I picked up only 100fps, but I suspect that while I was turning the poppet I may have heated it to the point of loosening the loctite that was holding the stem in place. It may have screwed in slightly losing 1/16 to 1/8", I'll be checking that later.
Also, the way the breech attached to the gun there is a cylindrical block (pn 0200 in picture) in the tube to provide threads for the breech, and the bolt stem to fix the action to the stock.
The poppet stem has to pass through the block and the end is sticking out just enough to be struck by the hammer. I will experiment with taking some material off the face of the block to give me slightly more valve dwell.

Cameron,
I would adjust the reg for higher pressure. Since it is designed for CO2 pressures, HPA should be safe up to about 1200psi. The vapor pressure of CO2 varies from about 500psi@30F to about 1200psi@100F.
1200psi should put you at about 12fpe with no other changes.
-
Thanks Scott,
When converting any C02 gun to HPA one should always be safe, a pressure/ temperature chart is very easy to locate with a quick Google search. 1200 psi is the max I want to go on reg pressure in this gun.
Luckily I have a few regs set up at various pressures to test out if I'm not able to achieve the desired power. I don't think I'll be able to get another 4 fpe with some minor adjustments on 800psi, I was just hopeful.
Trying higher pressure right now!
-
Put in my 1200 psi reg and fixed the poppet it screws in and I accidentally turned it about 1/8 inch inward.
Now it's pushing 11.9 for! Woohoo!

Cameron, you are one sick puppy. You have way to much fun with this stuff. We're going to start calling you "Scott Hull of the North" . Have fun on your hunt and good luck.

There ya go!
Tight bow strings, Cameron!

Thanks Jim,
We all know I have a light addiction to these things. Hah
I'd take the nickname as a compliment! The yoga/ pretzel position Scott uses and turning a QB into a competitive gun would certainly be a similarly.
The QB seems to like the Sniper Mediums so far. Trigger hasn't been worked on yet, so it's a little stiff. Here is a 15 shot group at 25 yards off my knee.
I'll send pics if I get anything this weekend/upcoming week!
Bonus Pic (my bow and stalking decoy)

It was a compliment to both of you. Best of luck on the hunt, I've never had Antelope so I'm expecting to try some soon. Looks like you are going to catch a little break with the weather. I'll be waiting for a pic.

Well unfortunately no antelope for me, it was tough. I felt like a dog with meat dangling in front of it. We knew where they were, I saw almost a dozen legal bucks a day and still wasn't able to get a harvest. The closest shot I had was just over 105 yards and was less than ideal. Oh well, it's good to be humbled and reminded that Pronghorn are truly a hard animal to hunt. If I had a rifle, man oh man I could have taken every one I saw. I guess it wasn't meant to be!
I'll be working on the pistol more this week! Trying to figure out how I want to finish the bare wood stock. The wood is pretty decent, does anyone have any suggestions for oiling, sealing, staining?

After carving the wood for a better hand fit ... Painted with Truck bed liner ( Black ) .... looks very tactical 8)

I wouldn't mind something being tacti-cool! Haha.
I think I might do that. Now that my new to me .20 is sitting in the safe and has some beautiful wood on it I won't need to do some fancy staining.
-
When I want to show the woodgrain, I've used Tru-Oil on a couple of smaller jobs, and have used Polyurethane on a couple of complete stocks. Either makes for a good presentation. Two coats minimum, but usually three. If it's a light colored wood, you can stain it first. But some cheaper wood stock materials don't seem to take the stain very evenly.
-
Finally got to work on it some more.
After talking with Motorhead and handling his sweet QB project I just had to have a go at a SSG for mine. A few hours of thinking and creating it's done!
Cut the end off my hammer giving it a little more room for a fixed ssg. It was attached to the old cocking/ spring guide leaving the cock on forward untouched.
After adjusting the spacing and spring tension it's shooting just at 11.6fpe. It is a clean crisp shot cycle and man using so much less air!
Can't wait to get everything back together.
-
Slick way to do an SSG on a QB ;)

Thanks buddy!
Works great! Love this dang thing. Gotta sight it in tomorrow. After working with Jessica's gun.

I saw Cameron's QB pistol in action at this weekends California State match. Wow! Shoots as good as my Marauder based XProd pistol. By some skill and luck, I beat Cameron by only one point. I hit one more offhand shot than he did. And I felt I shot near my best on a tough course.
Cameron,
What about a cut down Gauntlet?
-
That pistol is gorgeous!!! I've been thinking about doing this to my QB project! This thread may have pushed me over the edge...

Thanks Scott,
That means a lot! You're probably one of the best pistol shooters I know.
I'd be more than happy to try a Gauntlet, I am thinking of three things that would be a little more complicated with a Gauntlet build.
1. The action sits higher, meaning the bottle itself might be more than 3" below the boreline.
2. The air tube looks slightly longer, my 14.75" barrel is about .5" longer than the bottle.
3. Trigger, I don't know if it uses the same target trigger from the AR series beeman rifles.
I believe the Gauntlet as a pistol would be awesome. I might have to try it?
When I get my Gauntlet I'll try to do a write up about it!
Looking forward to shooting with you at Nats!

Standard QB (Maybe a Deluxe, it's been a while). I haven't done anything to it as of yet, life got in the way. Plan is:
- Shorten standard tube down to 2079 length, no flats for 2079 tank block screws
- Simple PCP conversion using 2079 tank block, Ninja reg (reg'ed to 1k I think?). No major valve mods
- SSG install
- Have a Weihrauch barrel blank machined to fit- not sure if I want .177 or .22. The QB is a .177, I have a .22 bolt.
- Add on a threaded LDC adapter
- Have fun with it!
Since I'm not sure which way I'll go (am leaning towards pistol though), the stock is up in the air- modify the stock I have, or buy either a QB79 or 2079 stock.
-
Starting with a long air tube is a nice thing. You can get all the plentum you want.
What be power are you wanting to get out of it?
I was thinking about doing a simple QB stock and putting an aluminum plate in to add a pistol grip.
It might be a good idea to buy a qb79 with a pyramyd or airgun Depot promo code and have spare parts as well as the ones you need.
A spare stock and a tank block and a spare valve are darn near the cost of a new QB!
-
12 fpe is what I'm after, but if it's more- so be it!
I've been thinking about getting another one in .22 so I won't have to get a HW barrel blank, and also to use for my pumper project... I dunno though. I'll probably end up doing it. ;D
-
I have a AR2079a in .22 and with a little barrel prep and refaced the muzzle and recrowning it it is able to shoot 5/8" groups at 50 yards. That's using 15.9jsb (the barrels favorite) at 19.9fpe.
They are fun guns, pretty easy to work on. If you installed a 1200psi reg, a larger transfer Port, removed the c02 pieces in the valve and you'll easily hit 12+ in 22 , or ,.177. especially with a full length barrel.
-
Well,
I was hoping I could get this thing all put together, and shoot well with it. Luckily, things worked out as planned!
The pistol course at the 2017 AAFTA Nationals was set to be challenging as well as fun. The height required to shoot 75+% of the targets required me to shoot in a totally unpracticed position, luckily I was able to make it work! A couple targets proved to be faulty or out of regulation. The two targets that were thrown out fell both times I shot each of them. This gave 4th place an extra 2 points and brought them one point ahead of me. I was certainly a little disappointed.
This is not the first time a protest has effected my overall score, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But on a more positive note, with my $325 pistol project (including scope) I was able to get 2 points away from two of the best pistol shooters around. Multiple time national champ Riz Marquez and the man Tyler Patner both shooting a Thomas, built and designed by a great guy Mr. Mike Niksh.
I'm happy with fourth, there was only one target that I can say I truly made a mistake on (misranged). It cost me two points and a chance to be in a shootoff for a three way tie for first place.
If there is a will, there is a way! I've ordered the parts to make two more pistols, and plan on making one into a carbine to switch from wftf to pistol. Hopefully it works out. When I get started on it I'll keep this thread up to date!
Thanks,
Cameron

Cameron, you assume that party got two points. Perhaps he was tied with you and got only one point, instead.
I shot in the Hunter Division so we were not competing. I shot that defective target squarely on the paddle twice, but it fell only once. I didn't protest the target, but several others did. I backed up at the shooting line to shoot the target out of regulation (9-1/2yds) dropping it both times. So I didn't receive 2 extra points. But others did. Point is I shoot the targets best I can, and let the officials square the scores if needed. Sometimes the adjustments benefit, sometimes not. Dems da breaks...
-
Im just saying it was unfortunate,
Not that I disagree, a defective target is a defective target. The target did not fall for them for either of the two shots and I believe was later added, it was tested I believe three times with the WFTF tester and passed. Two times of which I was watching. The target looked to be having intermittent failures and I agree that it should have been pulled.
It was great shooting with you on Sunday!

...
Cameron,
I know how you feel.
I measured two targets below 10 yards. I got one of those targets both times, but they pulled that one. The one I missed both times, stayed in. The farther target that got pulled, I hit both times. So no extra points for me.
I gained some free points at the 2016 Nationals and it put me on the WFTF/Piston podium (5th). Sometimes you luck out, sometimes not.
This time, the free points cost me big time. Lost the grand Prix. Lost out on the $400 gift certificate, and lost the chance to shoot-off for National Champion.
The final results are often in the hands of judges. That is something that I would like to see changed. Currently, target function is subjective. It should be objective and definitive.
I might double down next year in the pistol GP. Maybe try to travel to more GP matches and go for both Hunter and Limited GP's. If they fix the target visibility rules, we might be able to compete effectively with the bipod/bucket users. I almost did it this year.
Thomas guns won all the GP pistol and PCP classes this year. We need to fix that next year. ;)

There were only two targets riding the 10yd line... the illegal 9-1/2yd target that was pulled (lane 7), and the near standing lane target, right on 10yds or slightly more (lane 10). There were three additional lanes with close targets, but all were 11 yds or so (lanes 2, 6, and 12).

Oftentimes, the target "marker" (sign) was 1/2yd or more closer to the line than the actual target. Yellow 5 Standing (shown) for Rifle was the same Green Standing lane 10 for Pistol. Targets at 10 and 17yds for both matches.
All too easy to get tripped up by the signage.
Time to get back on topic. This thread is about Cameron's pistol project.

And I enjoyed meeting and shooting with you as well. I'd not shot on the west coast yet, So I looked forward to meeting so many people I had only seen in print on the forums. It was challenging fun...

By marker, I meant the lane marker (i.e. - the small posts that define the firing line). Not the target number signs.

Got my new pistol scope on,
Hawke airmax 3-12x50 with the sunshade. I can officially say it cost more than the pistol, but it's a little nicer than the leapers tracks better, clearer glass etc.
Bought a new Weaver/ picatinny rail that will be here soon as well as an offset one piece mount. Should be here and installed in a few weeks.
For now I'm focusing on my HW97, and getting Jessica's new scope dialed in. Also been making FT winders like crazy! They have been modified to fit a larger spool for faster winding.
When I get the new accessories mounted I'll post some more!
-
Way Cool!
Your rail parts on order ... moving the scope backwards? Eye relief issue?
B
-
I'm in the process of making a homemade buttstock for it, so the Weaver would make for a quick scope change if I let someone use it or want to use it for WFTF.
The main reason for the new rail is because I will have quite more scope support, if you look right now I'm only using the front portion of the dovetail, and am only supporting that 27.5oz scope with a bkl double strap.
The new mounts will keep the eye relief similar, but bring it back just a tiny bit. It will also bring my scope a little higher to the point where my 10 y clicks are the same as my 55 y clicks!
-
Luckily I can shoot this little guy just as good as my beeman, so I have the back up ready to go if they change the rules.
Crosman 14.6" LW barrel, shoots 10.34 jsb at 710 for 30 shots. Not a bad little pistol for a couple hundred bucks.
My factory barreled home tuned airmax .177 group's sub 1" at 35 yards. But with a 9" barrel I can only comfortably get 10.5 fpe out of it for 25 shots. I shot that one at Nevade State (Battle Mountain) for my second FT match and placed alright.
I have way too much fun with these things. My new Umarex Gauntlet will be here Friday, I'll probably bring it to the Sac Valley Match on Sunday to have people check it out. I ordered the dang thing in April and am now just getting it.
-
Put a new barrel on the gun! Who would have thought this would be so complicated.
It's not like turning a barrel was complicated enough... The barrel and the tank were now touching. So I tried to take off my regulator/tank and it got stuck. Removing it from the gun over and over to tune while under pressure may have not been the smartest thing.... You live and you learn. Ultimately I had to shim the front of the breech to achieve clearance.
Received a few barrels in the mail about a month ago and have had dreams of putting one in my favorite FT pistol. So I spent a morning turning it down, making the O-ring grooves, polishing the leade and making the transfer port. I think it turned out pretty good!

Illegal gun ... made from too many other guns !!!
Bare stripped wood stock ... dang Cameron how getto can ya get ;D
Open barrel & no LDC ... Geez my head already hurts from the blast ;D
So in a Nut Shell ... NOOICE Pistolll ya got there 8) 8)

Illegal?! Oh no am I touching it to my face again?? Hahaha
Lol I don't have time to make them pretty, I only have time to make them shoot well! I haven't developed the Gene for making pretty guns yet. Once I get it back together I might stain the wood.
Hope to get it up and shooting soon!
