Title: Good big bore for hand pump
Post by: Darinjfry on July 24, 2017, 09:33:22 PM
Hey everyone. Was thinking of stepping up to a bigger bore airgun for fox/raccoon hunting, either a 30 or 357 caliber. What would be a cost effective PCP that would also not kill me filling with a hand pump? ( I'm not equipped with tanks for filling my pcp's)

Testing various pellets (or slugs) could be a pumping chore but it should quickly become a non-issue given the relatively few shots needed for hunting.

Well, unless you have an infestation of epic proportions.

You could go with a .25 cal Marauder cranked up.  You could also install a .30 cal conversion kit in it.  Mountain Air Custom Air Guns sells the .30 cal conversion kit with TJ barrels and maybe LW.  http://mountainaircustomairguns.com/faq/. (http://mountainaircustomairguns.com/faq/.)  I have pumped the Marauder up many, many times so I know it is doable for some.

I'd go something like the Sam Yang recluse.

The recluse is doable with a hand pump, pumped mine for 3 years, before I got more PCPs and needed a compressor.

Also consider the Evanix models. I have the more traditional Rainstorm II in .30 and love it... its very accurate and a multi-shot. Until recently I've been a hand pumper and had no problem pumping the Rainstorm. I now have a high pressure compressor just because my 4th pump was dying on me. I think in general the Korean guns are good choices because of their low fill pressure requirements and fairly high power.

Darin, a .30 Rainstorm or .25 Sumatra carbine. The Rainstorm has a 250cc air cylinder. The Sumatra has about the same size cylinder. The Sumatra is shorter & about a pound lighter than the Rainstorm @ 6lbs vs. 7.2lbs.

IMO, neither of those animals need a .30 or .357 to be dispatched cleanly, unless you plan ion sticking to only body shots. And even then, a .25 shooting heavy pellets or better still HP cast slugs with enough velocity will work just as well for body shots if driven fast enough, provided you pull your weight with regards to Shot placement. So that said, any powerful airgun in .25 cal should be able to get the job done.

I suggest looking at the Sumatra, the Evanix RS II, and the Hatsan BT65, all three are easy enough to pump fill, proven reliable & accurate, and capable of producing the power to do what you described.

I pump my Rex in .45 with my hand pump no problem. It only takes a few minutes to fill after 6 shots.

I was just wondering why no one had recommended a Rex yet  ;)

I also agree that for the intended quarry, a big bore isn't needed. I've taken both species with sub-20 fpe guns with well-placed shots. If you need the flexibility for body shots, a .22 or .25 that shoots close or over 30 fpe will be all the power you need with hunting pellets.

I hand-pump my Hatsan AT44S-10 rifles all the time, they are quite doable, even for a woman. A lotta people find the sweet spot in the fill pressure and only pump that high, and that makes it even easier.

I have a .25, .22, and .177 version of this gun, and I would use any of them on both fox and raccoons without hesitation. At 46, 42, and 30 fpe, respectively, they are all hammers. Your quarry will have no chance...

You can get them at Field Supply for $299 each. I bought three, these guns are cannons, lol..

Welllll, yes, I do, lol...   ::)

But nooo, I don't want MY abs to look like that, ha ha!!  ;)  :P

It take a LOT of pumping to work this belly off lol. I already have a hatsan at 44qe in 22 and really like it. Was looking at the carnivore. Also considered the Rex but have heard mixed reviews.

I've heard good reviews from people that own Carnivores, but like all things you're gonna have good and bad, I hear good things about the Texan in .308 and .357, I already have the .45 and it's great, but with big bore your shot count goes down, I get about 8 good shots with roundballs from my .45 texan, I'm sure the shot count on the smaller calibers are much better.

Really have thought about the REX.  Realized I have no sane use for a big bore airgun, and I've enough .177/22/25's that are fast enough to be under-used, so gave up the idea.  I'd have fun testing it and targeting it, but really don't have anything that I need to shoot with it...so after the initial fun, it would just likely sit there neglected.

Yeah..smallish air tube for a big-bore....so likely not too bad to refill so long as you stick to the "sweet spot".

Still, one old rule of thumb has held true about pump filling.  On average, staying inside the sweet spot pressure, you'll put in one pump for every 10 foot pounds of energy output.  On an air hog, that might be 1 pump for every 7 foot pounds....for an efficient one, maybe one pump for every 14 foot pounds...but use 10 foot pounds as a guide.

So if you got 6 shots at 100FPS per shot....call that 600foot pounds...or 60 pump strokesto refill that 6 shot sweet spot. If you had a large air volume rifle that could give you 15-16 shots inside a reasonable velocity variation...that would be 160 pump strokes for a sweet spot refill.
