I hope this is a good post in the SoCal section. Does anyone have a range (pay or free) to take some longer shots? I would love to set up a shoot.
-
I'm looking for the same thing so hopefully someone tunes in... ;)
- Like you avatar! lol

Thanks Frank!

Maybe we should just exchange info and find a place. I've been wandering on google
Maps looking for spots in my free time.

get a hold of Chip Smith (csdilligaf@cox.net)
he and another custom gun smith shot a custom Airgun a cpl/few years ago at a range in San Diego

Thanks Dick, maybe I'll hit him up. I was really hoping to meet someone who has a little land I could just come and practice a 100yrds on. I enjoy the outdoors here too much and there is something to be said about chiliing prone with just your rifle and your target in good company. The one thing I do is respect others so I'm hoping to meet people who show the same respect and love to throw lead around. Been searching around for a good group to join but so far this is the only room I found in my area. Found a great airgun store L&M ammo. It's a little drive for me but it's worth it. They have some nice breakbarrels and PCPs to choose from. Good guys too!

Talked to Chip awhile back and he suggested the PP2K range. Not really the answer I was hoping for but he was nice.
Still on the search for a good spot since I just picked up a new rifle too, so if anyone knows of anything and wants to meet up for some fun shooting. PM me. Love to get a small group together and have some fun. Maybe bring the “older” kids too.
Did this SoCal forum die off? It’s a little too quiet around here....

Finally got some time to hit a range tomorrow and meet with a fellow GTA member. Should be fun. If anyone is interested to meet up PM me. Should be fun & wish me luck....going for the 100 yard and test different pellets at that range.

I’m interested, but I gotta go to work.
100yards? Raahauge’s? That’s all I know of to stretch things out.

No a lot more southern then that I believe. San Diego east side area. If we get enough people to agree to a good spot that’s not too far between LA and SD....someday we should have a lead potluck. ;)

Went to P2K today in San Diego with another GTA member I met here and boy was it fun! The staff was pretty friendly and helpful. Had to start out on the 25 yard indoor range and do a "proof target" in order to go to the 100 yard indoor range. So...we filled up, put up our normal practise targets, and did a couple clips of practise shots to see it things were hitting on point. Things felt good so put up the proofs and put 3 shots on it. 3 shots ONLY as you'll see from the pic. Simply turned in the card, showed them the rifle, and then they moved us to the 100 yard range. This "proof" also lets you go straight to the 100 range next time.
Spent the rest of the time there testing out a couple different pellets. Funny cause it's sooo hard to see the pellet holes from that distance..hence why I prefer the splatter targets. Didn't get pics of the target from the 100 cause we didn't stick around long enough to retrieve them, since the wives started calling ::) but they were not bad at all...started grouping very, very well (within 2").
Others around us thought we were using illegal firearms cause they were so silent....but the rangemasters knew. lol
Overall it was a good experience! Since we had our own targets/ammo/glasses/earplugs it was just the lane rental so we spent about $30/ea for the 2.5 hrs there. IMHO worth it if you want to sight in a new scope or test a new pellet without the influence of the outdoor elements. Clean place too.
BTW, we also experienced the "look & grin" people (not-so-much staff) give you when you check in with an air rifle, especially when you are carrying an air tank... ::) but once we quickly slapped those proof cards and gave them back, I didn't give a hoot cause the 100 yard range is where the real shooters go. Less of the "open Public riff raff." You can really spend some time a dial things in. Like their shooting benches too! I'll go again for sure if I need to do some testing, but I'm going to start looking for a outdoor spot.

Did you have any luck finding an air rifle only range? I am in the San Diego UTC Area and have just purchased a new Evanix Tactical Sniper. Still waiting on it to arrive. As I will be using a hand-pump until I can upgrade to a bottle, would prefer something a little more laid back while I get used to the new rifle, get it sighted in, and a lot of pumping.
Also looking for a company that might be able to retrofit the stock with an AR or AK stock.
Feel free to PM as well.
Thanks for posting this topic. I seem to have many of the same queries.

No luck yet finding an air rifle only range. Don’t think there is one. A few of us are trying to meet up sometime but we are a little spread out between north and south counties....and it’s raining a lot this coming week! May just have to hit up P2K again since it’s indoors, but I really want to find a 50 yard indoor. The 100 is cool but it’s a little too far for what I want to range some of my airguns at.

Dont think SD has an AG only range. If I remember correctly, Poway Weapon & Gear has an indoor range for 25, 50, and 100 yd.
I'm still using a hand pump (that needs a rebuild, lol). Also still pretty new to this and I'm still playing around with my setup. I did do some driving Friday and found some promising spots up in North County but I need to get out and walk it first.
Also looking for a company that might be able to retrofit the stock with an AR or AK stock.
Id have to see the parts but I might be able to help.

Used to have a nice shaded range out to 45 yards in east county but encroachment has limited us to an indoor 10m range. My experience is the airguns do not mix well in many cases with firearm range use. Like you note, as you stretch out past 30 yard it helps to have spotting scopes and such on hand just to see the pellet holes.

North County Firearms in San Marcos is going to open the doors on their indoor range soon, from what I have heard, April or May, I usually go to Iron sights in O'side or to a Friends house in Valley Center, unfortunately my Friend is not a very sociable person and will not want any one else on his property, and all the outdoor ranges are Member only or must have a Member present, I also go out to Ocotillo Wells, south on split mountain rd, just past fish creek wash, east on the dirt road along side of the Railroad tracks about a mile down. you must shoot on the south side of the Railroad track (Considered BLM land), north side is considered State Park so no shooting. you can shoot as far as you want out to 2000 yards depending where you are along the tracks.

Yeh, problems with meetups sounds like a San Diego problem in general. Everyone here, myself included, is incredibly busy, seemingly all the time.

I totally agree with you getting everyone to agree to one day is hard to do, but maybe if we pick a couple weekends we can get a couple fun groups to meet and have some fun.
It’s all about finding the right spot and everyone being responsible in regards to safely. It’s all about having a fun time right? In an ideal world everyone would just show up and bring something potluck style...and refreshment of choice of course and throwing around a lot of lead.
BTW, P2K has cameras on each of their 100yard range targets, feeding tv monitors in your booth so you don’t need binoculars. Using reactive targets helps a lot too.

Hello,
Digging up this thread to find outdoor places to shoot close to SD. Hopefully with others with same interest.
Not a range, preferably somewhere in the woods with shades.
-
Without question, the BEST range in the San Diego area is the South Bay Rod and Gun Club in Dulzura. We were members years ago. Huge facility, very professionally maintained and run. They have just about every distance target you would ever want.
-
Totally agree that SBRG is the best place. Actually started working there as an RSO. Best time is early when they open at 8am. Less wind. I’m down to meet up if anyone is interested.

there is the indoor range in Poway Scripps ranch area, it has a 100 yard range, but you might need to reserve it, We go out to Ocotillo wells, out split mountain road to the railroad tracks and go East (Left) on the dirt road for about a mile, it's BLM land on the south side of the railroad tracks, so it's ok to shoot as long as you clean up your mess and targets, the Rangers can be Jerks at times if you are shooting Powder burners, but airguns they don't mind much as long as you only shoot on the south side of the tracks, you can camp there too, we stay all weekend, take shade Popups and tie them down good, it gets windy at times out there, best to wait till winter to go out there since it gets above 100* during the summer.

Hey all!
I’m new to the forums and thought I would check out the local scene.
I didn’t realize it was so tough to find a place to shoot air rifles in the county.
I brought my Benjamin to the indoor range at the gun store in Clairemont once. The range officer kinda freaked out thinking I had a suppressed magnum rifle :)
Cocking and loading a break barrel indoors at a range is awkward…

I bet some places in the CNF would be the best bet.

Yeah, National forest areas should be fine for Air guns, BLM land is the best areas to shoot, Make sure to clean up your trash, just Do Not Shoot on Indian Reservation land, make sure you know the Boundaries......
-
My understanding is that Cleveland National Forest doesn't allow for recreational shooting.
There are some little patches of BLM land scattered around North County San Diego, but accessing them is something I haven't figured out yet. The people who do know how to get to these places keep their mouths shut, and probably rightfully so.

I think they don't like all the spent cartridges and mess from broken bottles and other targets from Powder burners and disrespectful shooters, if you hunt ground Squirrels, and have a hunting license, they shouldn't mind since Ground Squirrel is open all year round and considered a pest and disease carrier, doing test shots to sight the gun should be fine.

That’s how I would play it. Statist jiu jitsu, aka using the law and interpreting it to your advantage as far as possible.

I'm moving to Texas so I won't have this problem anymore..... ;)

As far as legitimate ranges go, these are the ones I am aware of:
Iron Sights, Oceanside
North County Shooting Center, San Marcos
Pala Shooting Range, Pauma Valley
Rainbow Shooting Club (Private), Just south of Temecula in Rainbow.
Poway Weapons and Gear, Poway (100 yards, but $$$)
The Gun Range, San Diego (probably the cheapest indoor range?)
Discount Gun Mart, San Diego and Santee
P2K (100 Yards! and Shotgun Sports), Eastern El Cajon
South Bay Rod and Gun Club (Long Distance, plus shotgun sports), Dulzura
and have a hunting license
Right. Cleveland National Forest doesn't care much for recreational shooting, but Ground Squirrel hunting could be fun. I have cleared my yard of gophers already :)
-
I go to Iron Sights now and then, they don't mind Air guns, Just abide by the rules and your good.
