Title: Problem with Beeman R1 - Newbie needs help!
Post by: HarrisD on May 20, 2011, 07:00:04 PM
Hello all. First time post. I'm a Newbie looking for a little help.

Background: I recently got out my dads Beeman R1 rifle that had been in closet for several years since he passed. I had previously shot this gun many years before but admit I don't know a lot about it.

I first cocked the the rifle then brought the barrel back into the locked position. I then examined the safety (a sliding bolt on the receiver) and it appeared to be in the fire position. I then tried to pull the trigger but it would not fire. I then tried cocking it again but it opened too easily with no spring indicating it was in fact already cocked. I cannot seem to move the safety left or right. It does not move and I cannot pull the trigger to fire it.

Reviewing what I had done I suspected that I may have inadvertently moved the safety while I was in the process of cocking it?? I read the short manual I found online that said "Do not move the safety to the FIRE position during loading." and this made me think that is what I may have done. I don't see how this has anything to do with my problem and probably is just safe practice.

Bottom line is the gun is cocked but I cannot fire it. Any help would be very appreciated.

Try to recock the rifle fully and see if it doesn't fire off, some times you think you have it cocked fully and it isan't!  :P

And don't dry fire it, you will break an expensive rifle

I have tried to re-cock but it seems to already be cocked. Breaking the barrel does not have the spring tension it did when I first cocked it. By fully re cocking it the safety is reset each time but when the safety is pushed off it still will not fire. Re cocking resets the safety each time.

So it seems to be cocked but I cannot fire it by pulling the trigger. Also once I have moved the safety off I cannot move the safety bar back on. Is this normal?

I hate leaving it cocked as it is probably not good ...

Problem solved. Thanks to Mark 611.

I was able to de cock by fully depressing and holding the barrel while pushing off the safety and pulling the trigger. I will clean and lube per his recommendation.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
