Title: Is it too much to ask for a cheaper scope to remain on zero going from 3x-9x?
Post by: RAJOD on June 20, 2017, 05:51:03 PM
I had a 3-9x hammers scope on a springer and my springer ate it, knocked the erector lens right out.
It was under warranty so sent it back  Had to pay shipping both ways.

Its back but when testing it with gun locked in a vise when going from a zero at 3x and zooming to 9x the cross hairs shifted about 2 mill dots up.    So really the scope is only good for 1 magnification.

I would send it back but thinking maybe I am expecting too much from a 90.00 scope maybe they are all this way.

My other scopes like my elite, UTG, Hawke don't have this issue.  But they cost more too.

Mine are all fairly cheap except the Bugbuster but some people consider them cheap, my others are CP's, they all hold zero good.

After reading many threads on this same subject, even the best scopes sometimes have this problem. I believe NCED has written of much about his travails with this problem and zero moving after focusing.

My zero changes on my utg scope at different mags.   At least the one on my disco does, haven't tested the swat on my marauder for it.

Think you need to spend big bucks before that issue goes away.

Next time I go to the range I'm going to play with this.    Curious to see how off the gun is at 16x vs 4x.

I think every scope might have this to an extent. Maybe FFP scopes don't?

Focus shift is normal with Non FFP scopes.

I have a Vortex Diamondback 4-12 X 40 AO that causes a change in POI by ~0.75 inches when going from 4X to 12X at 10 yards.
Guess I'll have to set it and forget it. LOL!

I have a few variable power scopes and just noticed this myself on my new CP 4-16X 40

I can do the same just leave it at 9x power.   2 full mill dots at 30 feet is quite a bit of shift.    My elite does not budge at all.

Maybe on cheap scopes it is.   My Elite does not change at all going from 6x to 12x to 24x.   No shift.

Sort of defeats the whole purpose of a variable mag scope.    Its not the norm on better scopes.  Not 2 mill dots worth of shift.

I just checked 5 scopes from a 130.00 UTG to a 800.00 elite.

I locked guns in vise with cross hairs on a target 30 feet away.  I zoomed from lowest to top power.

All scopes but one did not move zero on magnification changes.

The hammers you can see a big shift during the zoom everything gets shift up 2 mildots from 3-9x

Its something that you do not want in any zoom scope.   Apparently inexpensive UTGs and Hawks don't have it at least mine don't.
