Title: Looking at a new .45 Texan
Post by: Ozarkairgunner on June 14, 2017, 02:28:44 PM
So I'm currently looking at buying a new .45 Texan for deer season, and wondering if there is any reason I shouldn't, or if there are any others that I should be considering that are along the same price and that I could have in my hands by this fall? I would consider the .357, but Missouri requires that you have .40 or larger for deer when using air rifle. Also with the .45 I know I could do a low power tune with round balls to hunt yotes. Additionally what pellets (slugs) would you recommend with what power settings for the best set up for whitetail?

I think in that price range the Texan is the best 45 cal, it has the power and is accurate too.  I have a very accurate slug for the 45 Texan, 290 grains hollow point.  This is the most accurate slug for the Texan I have shot and has very good feedback.

Don't pay the extra for the SS Texan get the normal one. The SS has less power. Nick has good slugs including the 372gr beast he makes. I haven't ried the 290gr but I've read good things.

Get with Jeremy from african air ordinance and get the upgraded spring. Mine shoots 542ft lbs at 810fps with nicks 372gr at 3k psi. First line toward muzzle on the power wheel. It also shoots 2" groups at 100yds with that slug.

It pushes nicks EPP slug 168gr 1050fps at the same setting. I can hit a propane tank at 100yds with them.

My Texan is my favorite rifle to shoot air or PB. But it's an air hog lol.

I should've said that I was planning on the original, I don't see any benefit to the SS model for deer hunting.

The Texan will make you a very good deer rifle I have one and we have taken a half dozen deer with it and it is a very powerful air rife just the way it comes from Airforce. I have tried a lot of different bullets and there is nothing I have tried that compares to Nick's 290 gr. bullet.
