Title: Walther Talon Get's An Airmax
Post by: Gut2Fish on May 27, 2017, 09:34:03 PM
It's been a long journey of scopes with my Walther .22 (aka Hatsan 125). It broke two side focus Hawke Vantage. Last year after the second scope went in two weeks I'd spoke with Hawke tech saying I think it's the side focus that can't handle the beating. He agreed and really wanted me to upgrade to an Airmax side focus. Well, a scope that cost as much as the gun is enough for me so wanted the AO. That's back when they didn't know when the new reticle were going to be in stock, already had been few months over due. Put on the back burner...thought about it when I had to kill a mink open sights that was killing our chickens. Currently inundated with ground hogs so made the call to get an RMA # and do the exchange. First they sent back a new Vantage. Called and said I love the scope but it seems a shame to let me break a perfectly good scope on my beast. They agreed and emailed a return shipping label.

Had time today to mount my new Airmax 4-12 AO. Really like this scope. First two shots were way low and to the right- like 10 inches low and 5 inches right. Made serious adjustments with little movement. Looked at the mounting to realize the scope was touching front of my picitiny uni mount. Grabbed a file and leveled off the first nubs in time to remount the scope set adjustments back to 0 and make one shot to see how it matched up with the gun. Not too bad. Three inches high and the slight left could have been my rushing the shot as I was getting eaten alive by black flies while the sun was setting. I'm happy with that for 20 yards.

Have a large garden to get in tomorrow but will be taking some time to zero this thing in to 35 yards. Will check screws and yadda yadda but think this scope is going to last. The parallax seems accurate, everything is tight to move and adjustments have good audible click. And the new Airmax reticle is darn nice.

May not have time to get shots out to 50 yards and beyond but will post a few pics of 35 yard zero if all goes well.

Figure out how fast it shoots, then set your near zero at 20 yards.  If your second zero is not past 35 yards(should be around 30-33 yards) use that wonderful reticle for the last 5yards....
Is the glass noticeably clearer?

Thanks,

Yogi

The glass is nice and clear. Can't say if it's better than the Vantage (with 1/2 mil reticle) as It's been so long using them. I was able to get a perfect eye relief with the Airmax; furthest back I cold mount the Vantage still had to lean in a tad for full view. The Vantage and older model name of same scope were 44 objective and the Airmax is 40. That and the fact I was determined for dead on eye relief so compeled to filed the picitiny mount made the difference. The last scope parallax distances were off from the start, and declined rapidly. This one seems dead on and being an AO plus using better quality parts should last my lifetime.

I see what your saying about zeroing on the incline of arc. Closer and less error to zero in. Last time I'd set up distance and back calculated speed think it came in around 890-900 fps conservative using JSB 18.13 grain. If that is true then the trajectory shows I can zero at 40 ft and it will rezero at 35 yards with only .33 inch arc at 25 yards. Tempted to stretch it to 40 yards and .58 inch over at 25 yrd. That would be 1" kill zone (omitting that slight over in arc) from 6.5 to 44 yrds.  Assuming all that is correct I should be able to zero at 35 ft and see if it's zero again at 40 yards.

Now I'm getting giddy. Once the kids get up and start baking with their grammy I'm stepping outside for an hour.

Yup, like this scope. Shimmed the back ring to make up for barrel drop. Zeroed in at 35 yards. Hard for me to shoot close range, seem to shake more than I do shooting long range. Any estimates of speed from those groups or zeroing would have had small value. Made a bench rest from 4ft ladder and pillow then used another pillow on a 5 gallon bucket to sit on. From that I could hit a can all day long 60 yards away. Moved it back to 80 yards before picking up and made one of two shots at it. Took 3 mil dots over at 10x power. There was no wind at all and most shots were to the left at range. 80 yard hit on can was inch low and inch to left, second attempt and third attempt by another person both hit ground left. Moved a few more clicks on scope to right and called it good. Zero at 35 yards and the mil dot adjustments for 60 and 80 yards suggest I'm getting 875-900 FPS with JSB 18.13 grain. Ready to take out the ground hogs!

Anxious to get your feedback on the Hawk Air Max because this is the one I was thinking about using on my Benjamin Trail 1500.

When shooting "close in" turn the magnification down.  6X is plenty at 20 yards.
