Title: SMK CP1 Trigger Spring???
Post by: Kid Shelleen on April 28, 2017, 06:06:23 PM
My SMK CP1 Co2 Pistol has a 2.5lb trigger pull and I would like to try to get it closer to 1.5 to 1 lb.  I’ve done some light polishing of the trigger and sear contact points, reduced the travel and lubed it, but can’t seem to find any posts on reducing the trigger pull weight.  From what I can see the primary way would be to cut a little off the hammer spring.  Anyone have experience with this?  Is it possible to get it down to 1.5 lbs and still function and be safe?  Thank for the help.

Sorry, I wrote "Trigger Sping" when I meant to write "Sear Spring".

I got an answer from Cobalt, saying he was able to reduce the trigger pull by replacing the sear spring with a lighter one.  He was able to safely get his down to 15 ounces.  If I can get mine down to 1 to 1.5 lbs. I'll be happy.  Many of you probably know this but you can reduce the trigger travel by screwing the grub screw in the trigger, further down so it pushes against the pin that stops the rear of the trigger.  You can do the same thing by putting a small "roller bearing" through the same pin (which is what I did since my grub screw was locked up tight).  When I get some time I'll try heating up the grub screw with a soldering iron and have another go at breaking it lose.  Reducing the length of pull in this way also moves the trigger a little further back in the trigger guard, giving me a little more room for my finger.  Why did they make that trigger guard so small?  I noticed that Tom Gaylord built a larger custom trigger guard for the CP1 he worked on.

I have a CP1 but have been satisfied with my trigger as is. Here is another solution that I have used many times for air guns as well as regular fire arms. Brownells has a compression spring assortment of 12 springs, 6 different wire sizes, and diameters, that you can probably use without cutting on the existing spring. It is a lifetime supply of springs for about $24

Thanks for the link to the spring pack Don.  That's just what I need.  I ordered a spring pack from Amazon and thought it contained a small enough spring but even the smallest was too big. I'm going to order the pack from brownells tomorrow.  I was impatient and cut two coils of the stock spring which brought the pull weight down to 1.5 lbs.  I'm not taking any more off in fear of making it too light and unusable.  After I get the spring pack I'll play with one of those and see if I can get it down to 1 lb.and not have any safety issues.

Did this work? I went ahead and cut down the sear spring and it was a disaster - talk about dangerous trigger! So I'm after a replacement - the spring pack is almost $50 in the UK so I'd like to know if it works first.. My measuring says that we need a 1/12 or 2.3mm WD spring and it looked like the smallest in the pack was larger than that..

Thanks,

Jason.

As a follow up, although I had no replies, the problem was NOT my reduced trigger, but a new spring guide supplied by T Robb (www dot trrob dot com/SMK_CP1_Co2_target_pistol_Stainless_Steel_Spring_Guide/p1449438_15674567.aspx) - this stopped the sear from fully engaging and so with the slightly reduced trigger spring the pistol would discharge with a small breeze over the trigger. With the new spring guide removed and the original installed, the sear now fully clicks into place and everything is great. The shorter spring works fine and I have a nice trigger pull weight.

For reference I also have a couple of replacement springs that I was testing - 3mm OD and 0.5mm wire bought from eBay - that also work well - slightly less tightly wound so a spring the same height of the original provides a lighter pull.
