I heard that at low magnification, Parallax is not really an issue, is that true?
There are a few scopes I like that are 1-4X and have no AO. Would love to use one if that is the case. They are more compact and lighter than the 3-9x scopes.
Thank You

Don't understand the physics, but I do notice that lower power is less of an issue. Was playing with a fixed focus 3-7 scope this evening and parallax error at 35 ft (approximately) at 7 power could be measured in inches. At 3x, barely noticeable.

The diameter of the objective is the biggest variable in calculating parallax. The straight tube scopes will have less of a problem. It is also less noticible to the eye through a lower power. If you adjust the parallax in the straight tube to the middle of your normal shooting range it will probably work.
-
As far as I know, a red dot with no magnification is also parallax-free.

Are you referring to the power range of the scope?
most 1-4x scopes that i am interested in don't come with any Parallax adjustment at all.
they do have the straight tube in front of the target turrets.
1-4X24 are the common ones i am looking at that are under 12 inches long.
Thank You

I'm guessing your goal is a non AO scope, but because I own a couple and they work very well, I thought I'd toss this out there....
The scope is a Hawke Sport HD 2-7x32 AO (they also have one in the Vantage line), I have several and the AO on all of them is set to 25 yards. I shoot anywhere from 15 out to 40 and so far, have found I can see just fine leaving them set that way. I also figured I'd mention them because they fit inside your 12 inch length requirement being only 11.5 inches long and weigh in a touch over 14 ounces, so they're not heavy..
Here's a link to the specs for them on Pyramyd Air if you're at all interested, but if you do a little surfing or watch for sales at Dvor, http://www.dvor.com/ (http://www.dvor.com/) which is free to join, you can get them cheaper. During the last sale they were only like $55 + shipping:

The front half inch or so of the tube is a lockring. Remove it and you will see that the objective lens is in a threaded carrier. You can mount the scope in a vice of some sort aimed at a target at your preferred range and adjust that in or out until parallax free at that distance. Reinstall the lockring and it is done. Check for vidoes on youtube, but be warned that the lockring is a bear to remove the first time, I wrap them in several layers of painters tape and grap with a strap wrench to remove. I have had a couple AO scopes that would not adjust to 10 yards from the factory that I modified this way and a couple none adjustable that I backed up to 20 and 40 yards for airgun use.

Thank You, is the Vantage one cheaper than the Sport series? $55 was a really good deal.
I am mainly looking for one in the 1-4X range and without AO, so I don't have to fiddle with it.
I mainly shoot at around 18 to 25 yard range.
PS. tried to reply to you, but somehow i got a message saying, "you can not post external links"

thanks for the tip, didn't really know how to adjust parallax in a NON-AO scope, now i do.
I will try that when i get the 1-4X24mm scope, i haven't really found one that i like yet.
i think i will adjust it to 25 yards, as that would suit me fine with my shooting from 18 yards to 25, sometimes i do 35 yards.

Dvor is a discount site that's free to sign up for and they send daily emails with current specials and they have fairly regular scope sales on all kinds of brands, not just Hawke. The Vantage is the line of scopes Hawke built to replace the Sport HD line, but you can still find the HD series scopes at various places and they're generally a bit cheaper than the Vantage line. If you ever did decide you wanted one, about all you'd have to do is set the front AO at 20 yards and then just shoot all you want, you'd have a very clear view from at least 15 out to 30 before you might need to tweak the AO setting. It's about what I shoot with mine and I haven't touched the AO rings on mine since I originally set them.

If you're considering other options, here's a really nice scope for the money.
Fully multi-coated lenses, engraved reticle, in a 2-7x32. $64.00

I'm actually considering something like the Firefield 1-4x24mm Combat Scope type. Is 8.9" long.
-
That should be nice.
I've been thinking about a crossbow scope.
They generally have about a 40 yard parallax and a 5" eye relief. Which might be ok.
