I picked up a torque wrench gun screwdriver. I was looking at its documentation and it had these recommendations
Common scope base mounts - 18-20 in pounds
Scope rings - 28-30 in pounds
scope base windage screws - 40 - 45 in pounds.
I Started off at 25 and it seemed a bit tight, was not breaking free. I ended up setting them to 16 or so which felt better. The good is I know all the rings are the same in pounds. Its a pretty good one, even had a calibration card and name +- 1 percent of something like that.
28-30 seems a bit aggressive on scope rings or am I off base here?
-
It doesn't sound right.
The base should and can be tightened more than the rings.
I use 35 in-lb for the base and 15 for the rings.
I don't have any scope base windage screws.
-
I think the scope mount to the rifle base is 30 inch pounds and rings are 15 inch pounds.

Package my Hawke rings came in says 33 in-lb for base, 16 in-lb for rings
-
Depends on base metal and screw/thread size. Generally speaking with aluminum rings, 15 inch pounds is average. I never stripped a screw from over torquing, but I sure dented a scope once over torquing... why I now own a torque driver.
-
Ok thanks guys. I think the manual of the driver has the directions on the rings backwards. Good thing I did not listen to it.

I also put friction tape in my rings:

Just in case. ;)

Yes a very good idea on the tape. I will do that next time I pull the scope off. Might be even better on a springer, I always thought my GS950 was moving the scope as it shot all over the place.
-
Definitely on a springer. I still do on pcp's because I don't want my scope tubes all scratched up.

To put things in more general terms, 15 in-lbs for M3 screws threaded into aluminum, and 30 in-lbs for M4.

No idea what a M screw is.

I've never had a scratch on a scope from the tubes. Even if I did its under the ring, out of sight out of mind.

"M" = "Metric."

Yes will have to bone up on my gun slang. So M3 is a 3mm hex head?

Yes, until you mount that scope on another rifle that has tickled your fancy. I hardly ever sell scopes but I do sell rifles. As I gain experience I refine what I like/need/want and adjust my arsenal ;)

"M3" is three mm diameter and does not describe head type. Hope this helps.

IMHO.......way off! Here are the specs for a cheap UTG mount (click on image to enlarge)............

The BKL scope mounts don't give torque specs for the "top straps" but their base screw torque is 35in/lbs max. While I haven't had any issues with scope slipping when using the cheap UTG style mounts with the wide top straps and four small top strap screws using 15 in/lbs of torque, I have had scope tube damage then torquing the narrow top straps of two piece BKL mount when using that torque...........

This is what happened when I used 15in/lbs torque on the narrow BKL top straps..........

Notice the distinctive "double dents".
My BKL mounts.........

I haven't had any scope tube damage using 15in/lbs torque with the one piece BKL mounts and their wider top straps.
Anywhoo....I've found that the UTG torque specs work well with my .177 HW95 and R9 for all mounts except the BKL "double strappers" with the narrow top straps.

What brand did you purchase?

Taso no need to rub in the good deals you got. Don't even start :)

Rajod,
Sorry, I don't usually buy unless it's on sale. I hate paying full price.
My furnace went out a couple weeks ago. It needed a new logic board and another part. There went $1100. Those never go on sale. >:(
Thanks,
Taso
