I have both a F1 with extension control and a Caldwell Ballistic Precision. I swear, I think it's easier and quicker to shoot through the F1 write down the results and move on than it is to try to set up my android phone and/or iPad for each grouping.
The Caldwell with cell phone is clever alright but it's a pain in the derriere to reset and enter the new pellet info, etc., shoot and save. What am I doing wrong?
-
I have an old F1 and the Caldwell. If I just want quick results, I use the Caldwell without hooking up to my tablet and write stuff down on paper (or just as likely a scrap of 2x4 using a Sharpie). I would say you're not doing anything wrong at all.
My phone is a Windows phone, so no dice there. But my Android tablet (technically belongs to my wife) connects instantly. Any time I'm looking for serious data, I'm taking my time anyway so it's okay if things take a couple minutes to set up.
I could describe my F1 a number of ways, but the easiest (and nicest) is unreliable when compared to the Cadwell.
-
I use the Beta Chroney and also have the printer, it records and figures all the specs. It also serves as a extension control. Been using it for a very long time. Then you have a printer report. I don't know if the printer will work with the F1. The printer is a bit costly I think, but so does everything else.

I have about decided which chrony I want to buy just from reading on this site, from suggestions from other members, and from the features that I'm looking for, and it is.......none of the above.
While the accuracy of the Caldwell might be second to none, I like the features of the Competition Electronics Pro Chronograph Digital.
-
I only have the F1 and it's good enough for what I need.

I have the Pro Chrono and it has served me well, although it is a bit finicky. Make sure you have a fully charged battery, seems to be the biggest issue. I have the bluetooth dongle to android and I must say it is super easy. On your phone, the app has a large digital readout, as well as an audio readout. I just export the files to dropbox and they are at my PC when I need them...everything calculated.
-
I have the Pro Chrono Digital and the USB to my laptop. I found an adaptor that uses 6 AA Batteries instead of the 9v. Lasts a lot longer. I use the Harbor Freight 26 LED pods and it's virtually flawless. It has hiccupped but rarely. I capture the entire screen with windows snipping tool and it saves in .jpg within file size limits to post on the GTA.

I get different readings by maybe 10% on the same gun with the same pellets on the same day between the F1 and the Caldwell. I wonder which one is right and/or does it really matter in the greater scheme of things? ???

I just did!
Had to open an Amazon account to buy a mower part, so I figured what the heck.

Wonder if that also has something to do with the wobbling of the poles?

I've been itching to pull the trigger on the Caldwell Ballistic Chronograph. SG has it for $71.99 at the member price. Is it a good one at that price point? Others seem to be more expensive.

Mine was ~$72 from Amazon Prime w/free shipping; however, Amazon does charge sales tax. So yes, your cost is in line with what I paid.....if that answers the question?

Thank you! I was more interested in value, how do you like it? Is it accurate? Easy to use? Worth the investment? I'm new to this, so don't know much about this fancy devices!

It is easy to use and gives a velocity readout. Which, along with the group sizes, can help one determine the best pellet for that rifle. I have no way of knowing how accurate it is. ~$72 is about the best price I've seen. Only you can determine its worth.
Best wishes with your decision. :D

I think a chronograph can add to the entertainment value of shooting. As well as helping you to tune your rifle's performance.
And for most, it's a one time expense. With no maintenance or repair expenses. I expect to get many years, if not decades of service from mine, with no additional expenses unless I choose to make them.

Until you shoot it.

Here's a link for a thread I started to get members opinions on their chronographs in the $100 range to help me make my choice.

There was a LOT of positive feedback on the Caldwell.
I ended up choosing a slightly more expensive brand because of personal preferences.
And since I figured it would be the only one I would ever buy in my lifetime, I went ahead and splurged for another $28.

Until you shoot it.
I'm hoping that I'll like it enough to where I won't get mad enough to shoot it!
-
LOL.... you might want to take a poll on how many shot one on accident.
-
There was thread about shooting from inside to out where many had hit doors and windows. So.... ???
-
Someone around here is making 1/4 acrylic shields for them.
-
Found another picture of my little setup.
-
I guess I'll have to get the Bluetooth thing if I want to hook up to my laptop.
I'm sure I'd trip over those wires and break something. :-\
-
LOL... it's just the black wire. The white one goes to the window AC.
-

Indeed!
I took the wimp-way out by buying a pre-shot Chrony on EBay.
I haven't shot my Caldwell yet. Hopefully won't. I figure it doesn't matter what brand you use, even if it is off some, as long as it is consistently off.
-
Thanks for the feedback, I may have to make it my next purchase, after I pay off the most recent shopping spree!
-
I doubt that I'll be using my chronies, or anything else, for decades but they do add to the interim entertainment of shooting my air rifles. Get some!
-

In on the poll as a chrony shooter, but as a mechanical and electronic type, I was able to make it live once more. ;D
-
The one I bought says not to use Florescent lights indoors.
What about LED's? Has anyone tried them?
-
LOL.... you might want to take a poll on how many shot one on accident.
Perhaps an even more interesting poll would ask how many have shot one on purpose. ;D

Yep, these are what I use. Fasten them to the deflectors with a hair tie. Work great.

I would say that would be misleading results..... "Oh, I meant to do that"

Hands-down I personally like the Caldwell for the following reasons:
1) unfolding the Chrony and not losing parts is a pain for the Chrony, vs. the Caldwell (but neither sets up in seconds). I lost one of the rods for the chrony.
2) Once set up, if I am in a REAL rush and don't wish to save info for posterity, I simply turn on the Caldwell and mentally note the speed of each pellet. (I.e. setting up an FFH or SSG in a Marauder, etc.) vs a shot string for a customer's gun.
3) If I wish to record the data, I simply start the Caldwell application & turn on the blu-tooth on my phone. I then enter the weight of the pellet, and a description "M-rod #242", or "Bill's Vulcan", etc. Takes less than 60 seconds.
4) The BIGGEST REASON I like the Caldwell, is that not only does it come with a tripod and a carry bag, it is complete with very effective lights. I think poor lighting was the main reason I got so many error readings on my Chrony. That was so frustrating.
The Chrony does fold up to be very small, but won't include the lights or the stand. The Caldwell fits in a bag that is larger, but includes the lights and the stand.
If you is taking you more than 60 seconds to start the application, turn on blu-tooth, and enter name of rifle and pelllet weight, call my cell 714-612-5956 Thur-Sat when I am not as busy, and I'd be glad to assist you. I have one, so i am familiar with it.
Best to you.

I like the Caldwell, too. Serves my purpose well, which is mostly to test Sheridans .
