As we approach 20,000 registered members, it is time to do some house cleaning. Although the numbers looks QUITE impressive, they are not a true representation of GTA Forums. We are here and stay here because of you, the ACTIVE members. We would rather see 100 active members than a million inactive. Those do nothing to improve the forum, you folks do. We are going to be doing a membership purge this week. What we will eliminate are the folks that register and never logged back in. And only those that are over 1 year without logging in.
Just so you know when you look at the numbers, you will understand why.
:)
THANKS to all of you for making and keeping GTA the best airgun forum on the internet!!!!
And as always....
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!

Just did phase 1 of the cleanup. I took out all members that registered OVER a year ago but according to the software have not even logged in, ever. And of course have zero post count. If you haven't even logged onto the forum your account is totally useless.
This kinda surprised me that it only eliminated 2460 accounts. I will next be looking at those that have zero posts but have logged on but has been over 1 year. This batch can get into some issues if folks suddenly decide to log back in. But they don't have access to much of the forum without at least the introduction post.
:)
So again, there may be no loss by purging these too.
Will see.
We will just have to delay the announcement of reaching 20,000 registered members.
:P
-
Just my usual lame and unwanted 2 cents here, but if they have 0 posts and haven't logged onto the forum in a year or more, they probably aren't going to any time soon.
-
I usually get purged for "other reasons" ... :o ;)
Cheers,
Smoketown
-
I see the member count is down to a little over 17,000 right now ;D
-
If possible, zeemaps needs cleaning, too. Some have stuck their pin but there is no way to contact them.
-
Blood in, blood out baby!
-
I think you are being fair about it. If that were the case with me it would not surprise me that a sign in would not have results. Would just register again with no complaints. Was a member of the old forum but that does not show on this new one.
-
I would say over 2k is a good start,I'm guessing some may just read here and may not post ever. I see a huge participation here compared to other forums though. I don't post as often anymore but always enjoy reading new stuff on the daily.

There are people who don't come back?? :o :o :o

What about the people from the yellow that only have an account so they can post on our classifieds? Off with their heads? Lol

Lol...kind of a no brainer if they have 0 posts and haven't logged on in a year or more.

Gosh Dave I guess I better say something. "Something" ;D

Just another great reason not to go to jail......

I applaud the effort to purge the "members" who have never made a post. Caring more about active member participation in the forum tells the true story about an "active" forum. IMO, simply caring about a target number of members says nothing about the actual value of the forum. It's like large numbers of people's "friends" on facelessbook and Twitter followers...the numbers are meaningless, but the content is what tells the story about a person or forum.
At the end of the day, having 20,000 "members" on GTA, will not get anyone a free coffee at McDonald's. Same holds true for those who boast about their degrees. A PhD still pays $.59 for a senior coffee like someone with a sixth grade education. Being the go-to forum to get good information about all aspects of airguns is what it's all about.
JMHO
YMMV

It will certainly be interesting...

Yes it's rumored that AA (Airguns Anonymous) is occasionally successful...

Uh oh..... has anybody seen Rocker1 lately?..... ??? ??? ???

I haven't seen him, but he sent me a PM if see how I was doing and if I was ok, you got a respect like a guy like that. I do.

yes, we've seen this too.
When we set the map up, we tried to explain that when placing a pin on the map, it is IMPORTANT to use their same Screen Name, as they use on the GTA.
Some people have not done this.
The REASON for requesting they use the same screen name, is because you can not use the Map to directly contact someone.
You must find the person in your area on the map, and THEN go to the GTA and send that person a PM.
When they use a different name on the map, we have no way of knowing who they are on the GTA, and therefore, no way of contacting them.
sorry for the inconvenience... but we've got to hope that people will use it properly, if they want to be reachable.

There are people who don't come back?? :o :o :o
On the other hand, there are nearly 7.4 billion people that have never been here in the first place. ;D

Wow, you are a textbook "glass half full" kinda guy! ;D

I ran into this recently. I travel all the time for work, and sometimes I will look up shooters on the map to see what the local airgun action is. It doesn't help much when the pin says "Bill".
BTW - it looks like I'm headed to Birmingham AL next week. If anyone knows about local airgun stores, informal shoots or just wants to get coffee and pie, PM me!
-
I'm here guys, you wouldn't believe how many members that log in and read that only have 1 post but yet they still log in regularly. David

Lol.....yup. I prefer to look at myself as a realist. Of course I suppose I could just be in denial. :o
-
There are people who don't come back?? :o :o :o
??? ::)
I am sure there are people that everyone wishes would not come back. People like me. LOL
-
Done....for a little while.
I'll let the smoke clear and then take another look. I removed any membership that has not logged in over 2 years and has less than 100 posts. Some have not logged on in 5 or more years. And some that have zero posts. To be clear, no forum content has been touched. If they have made contributions in threads, those are still here. And if anyone of these folks do decide to come back and be active, it's a small matter for me to reconnect them to their threads and adjust their join date and such. Something I won't mind doing.
But now we are now realistically back to 11,766 members. I could prune a bit more but...like I said, I'll let the smoke clear first.
:)
It won't take long to build back up, at the rate of 10-20 new members daily.
-
WOW !!! Talk about "Big Brother".....
-
Purging inactive members makes good sense to me, given the criteria that have been used. What I don't understand is why anyone would go to the trouble of applying for membership and then not do anything with it! If one is interested enough to find the forum and then go through the application process, why would one not even log in after that? I realize that some folks apply only so they can list one, or a few, airguns for sale but to not do anything in the forum at all? Just doesn't make sense.

I do read the forum frequently, but don't post much. I don't want my posts to start with: "I don't know but...". Instead, I try to learn from the vast experience and knowledge available here. If I ever do have an answer that isn't duplicating anothers post, I WILL post. I think I'll mostly be posting questions though ;-)
-
I think that all those that have been deleted are inactive accounts that have no log ins and no activity foe periods of a year and more. So popping in and looking around constitutes account activity

I have no problem purging someone who signed up and never came back. In fact I would probably purge those more often.
I do however have reservations about purging people who have been here, posted, read regularly. And for whatever reason have not been back for a while.
I know speaking for myself only I tend to do airguns in streaks. I'll have an active year, then a year with me being much less active on the forums, but still shooting some. Then a year when I might or might not be back once.
My point, do you really want to purge someone just because they did not have anything to say in the last year? Is that person hurting the forums or the community in any way??? Because if they are I do not see it.
They are not taking up anyone elses space.
The good thing about this thread is now I know about it.
So if it ever happens to me I can skip the whole email trying to find out what happened part.
I can go straight to toxic targeting of those in control. With total unlimited uncaring virtual warfare. In short I can drag GTA's name through the mud endlessly until I get tired of it.
Is it really worth that?

I don't think toxic warfare is necessary, this ins't a hostile maneuver and no coup. Look at it this way, the worst possible result is that some inactive person needs to create a new account. Nobody is banned, no content is deleted, the door is open when you want to return, whenever that is. Why get your hackles up? We're all good! :D

I guess there is always going to be someone that is unhappy with decisions made by others.

All comments and opinions welcome.
I believe I stated anyone that has not logged on OVER two years were in this cleanup. Fact is folks interests change. Many drop out of the airgun sport. It happens. We do not need or want overinflated numbers here. We need realistic numbers. And this forum has grown tremendously over the last few years. And the only thing that keeps it growing and keeps it such a valuable asset to all are the active members. EVERYONE has access to GTA Forums to read and learn. But if you sign up, you are saying you want to be an ACTIVE part of our family. After two or more years of not even logging in shows you no longer want or have time to be an active part of our forum.
Now, I have been slammed for being proud of our high membership numbers. I have been accused of keeping them just to inflate our ego. So it appears to be one of those darn if you do darn if you don't scenarios. I did what I felt was necessary.
NO content has been altered. ANY member that suddenly decides they want to be active again, we are VERY happy and will accept them back. And as I stated, I will gladly take time out of my VERY busy day to reconnect their account and posts. The only persons being impositioned are the forum staff, not the members. So, if you feel the need to get toxic over these efforts, go for it. But that is not the attitude or environment we need or want on our forum. It's a totally wrong and unjustified complaint. And this is just MY opinion. And opinions are like a certain body part, everyone has one.
Have a GTA day. And thanks for the support.

Now you know why they set the limit at 2 years of no posts or logins and didn't go lower...lots of guys will get busy with life and family and not log on for 6 months or a year.
-
Hat's off to you Dave. It's a despised chore to do this pruning, but it will help the forum in the long run. All those inactive members take up space in the Database. Prune away! They can always rejoin later if they show up.

I wasn't banned or "purged" but I decided to leave for personnal reasons, 2 years ago. No comment from GTA administrators and done within a day.
Then I decided to come back, for better reasons, about one year after and asked for it : thus I can personnaly attest that it has been easy and fast, and I was very kindly welcomed by the GTA team.
Thanks again, Dave ! (and Longhunter for his good advice!) 8)

I appreciate the effort. I have (in some cases had) accounts with lots of websites that I have not used in years. My password file is full of those. When I go back to a site and I'm still there, I think cool, if not I create another account. No biggie. It is nice to know that I could get reconnected with my posts if it ever came up, never thought to ask on the others. Actually in truth, the other sites I either never posted or had very few posts. The reason for joining a lot of times is to see content otherwise blocked.
All that to say, in the old days, records were filed, moved or dumped, Today is no different, clutter is clutter and it requires pruning.
Thank you for taking the time to clean up.
Dave

I haven't posted much because I learn more keeping my mouth shut and listening.
I have bought the t-shirt and two caps in support of the forum tho.
Bought a rocker1 shroud for my Prod.
Went over to Milelo123's today to air up his custom Mrod he got from ezman604 today. Something about a reseating a poppet valve. It worked.
I am waiting for my first kill before I post on the hunting gate. Need to draw blood before I can walk & talk with the big boys. ;)
So in closing thanks for not purging me ;)
-
Eric, first off MUCH thanks for the personal favor to me. And the help to Mikelo123. He had to bleed his MRod down and trying to make the poppet seat again with a hand pump is near to impossible. You saved us both a lot of grief. I owe ya!!!!
As for purging, you have no worries there. I just purged those that have registered but never logged on at all. And those that have not logged in over 2 years and had low or no post count. You don't fall into any of those categories.
Thanks again my friend. Once again proving GTA and it's family are the best in the airgun world!!!
-
Your welcome.
Any time I can help I will.
-
I trust the guys that run this place to do the right thing, and they did!
I'm one of those guys with too many hobbies and not enough free time. I go from interest to interest in cycles, and may put down the air rifles and pick up the bow, or fly rod, or metal detector, or camera, or backpack, or... you get the idea. Not posting in a forum for a year is a real possibility for me, so I'm guessing it's possible for a lot of others as well. But TWO years seems a lot less likely.
Many thanks to the administrator and moderators of GTA for running such a great and friendly place full of shared knowledge and experience. What a truly wonderful bunch of folks here!
Tight groups,
Bob
