Title: AIR ARMS TX200 (.22 or.177)
Post by: tml on August 09, 2010, 07:08:08 PM
I wanna be able to do target shooting out to 150 ft and small game hunting . Probably more target. The .177 version has more reach and seems to be the most popular version of this gun. How far can I go with the .22 version. Anyone?
Tim

Clean your glasses, Gene, he said 150 FEET :-).  I had a TX 200 Mk. III .177, it was a 15 fpe rifle out of the box.  I sold it already, it just didn't float my boat, but it's a great rifle, and will easily do what you want.   Not a light weight, but one of the best off hand shooters I've ever owned.  The .22 will reach just as far, it just takes more hold over.  I also don't think you gain much, if any, energy over the .177.  But then, I have a poor opinion of .22 springers in general, so consider me biased :-).

Now if you're not dead set on a TX, you might consider the R9/HW 95.  Not quite as refined as the TX, but a lot lighter, and every bit as accurate, at least in my hands.  I got my R9 about the same time as my TX, I still have the R9 :-).  Later.

i own a .22 (actually searched for that caliber) tx and i use it 50/50 hunting and target work. mine is detuned and shoots 14.3 CP at 670 fps, but is super smooth which in turn makes it crazy accurate. I can hit a golfball at 100 yards 10 out of 10 shots. And hunting, since my max hunting range is 40 yards (120 ft) it has plenty of punch for game up to squirrel and crow. For smaller birds i can extend to 50 yards, as a .22 will do enough damage to kill immediately witha body shot. it is very accurate but you will find that 8 out of 10 people would have bought it in .177. mostly because they would use it for FT or HFT. I would not give mine up for anything in the world.

Thanks for the info. I wanna be able to hit targets up to 120-150 mark and do small game hunting. I noticed that many people went with the .177 and have used heavier ammo for hunting. Some have said the higher velocity will work with game up to a rabbit. I wondering how much a .22 will drop at 150 ft out of this gun compared to a .177 What distance does the .177 take over for accuracy?
Thanks,
Tim

22 would be your best bet for hunting but its a very heavy gun to be carrying thru the woods

I have a tuned b40 a tx200 clone I got mines in 177 because I wanted a ft rifle .177 =flatter trajectory so I choose that caliber if u want to hunt go .22 cal bigger pellet=bigger hole=more energy

Just a side not about rabbits.  There are VERY shock sensitive and, therefore, not a good indicator for a gun's ability to take game at extended ranges.  In other words, what works on a bunny might not translate to a squirrel, etc.

I have one on order (out of stock at supplier) and it's a .177 cal.   It's primarily going to be a target gun shot from the bench (and deck rail  ;)).   I suspect I will use it occasionally to dispatch grackles and squirrels off the bird feeder.  It has plenty of power and is probably accurate enough for squirrels and anything smaller.

like i said... i actually searched for a .22. they are accurate beyond my capabilities and they pack enough punch to be deadly. And mine is detuned... mine has the beech stock. i have seen the walnut and it is absolutely astonishing. But i wouldn't carry that stock out of my yard, so it's not a hunter... The beech one in the other hand is more "dentable"...lol

it shoots Crosman premiers at an average 670 FPS for a majestic 13/14 FPE. But it feels almost recoilless... you can actually let it rest on a sandbag and just hold it by the pistol grip and pull the extended trigger courtesy of Mr Jan Kraner and it will shoot quite accurately. Normally i understand that they shoot those pellets at 730 fps, but i would gladly give up those extra 60 fps to get a rifle that is easier to shoot accurately.

With the amount of money ur going to spend. On that gun I woudnt take it in the field to hunt the stock is sweet and blueing outstanding plus with a scope ur looking at 11/12 lbs of hauling like many has said its a deck gun lol u just relax on ur deck or porch and snipe my b40 although its 80% what a tx200 is has a custom maple stock done howie I wouldn't take that to the field just porch snipe lol

alot of people are saying the gun is to heavy. well with a springer it will help absorb the recoil alot. im a big guy so weight dosent really matter. Just something to think about. I say go with .177. it is much more forgiving at longer distances.

I own a TX-200 .177 and use it exclusively off the bench for target shooting. Extremely accuate out to 40 to 50 yards. As far as rabbits go, Red is correct about rabbits being extremly sensitive to a pellet. Thin skin and will go down even if the pellet bounce off of them...:)

Right you are, Gene.  I have a pair of house rabbits.  (No, no plans on eating them down the road.  I probably couldn't handle the richness since they eat better than I do.)  Rabbits are so easily spooked that you can scare them to death.

Is that a Simmons scope on that gun, Gene?
