Title: Evanix Sniper X2 357 pellet choice
Post by: Rollo on February 25, 2017, 01:27:11 AM
I just ordered a Sniper X2 in 357 and looking to see what everyone's favorite pellet choice has been so far.  Was trying to get a jump on ordering pellets for this thing and trying some out.  First looking for accuracy out to 100 yds. or so then knockdown power for hogs at around the same distance.  Any suggestions???  Also, anybody know what the rate of twist is on the .357???
Thanks!

You have JSB Exacts and Predators to try as those are the only .35 pellets out there, Exacts usually work fine in those Korean barrels. The twist rate is around 20". This bullet has worked well in Evanixes with stock power or low level tune: http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=34_255&products_id=2197 (http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=34_255&products_id=2197)

So far the JSB's have been accurate and pretty consistent.  But this thing likes heavy lead AND lots of air.  I found the Mr. Hollowpoint 120 and 124 gr. HP's to be the most efficient.  At first I was getting 2" groups at 50 yards but that's getting better.  I read somewhere on a post Nomadic Pirate said something to the effect "you gotta learn to shoot these things..." when it comes to big bore.  I'm learning just because it's a PCP it's not going to shoot as smooth as a .22 or .25.  I'm having to learn to "follow through" my shots.  When I do, it's dead on.  I've also noticed I get the best shots when it's at max fill (225 BAR), shooting the JSB 81.2 gr. at around 920 fps.  Maybe because the projectile is traveling faster the follow through is more forgiving???  I'm sure that will change at 100 yards.

Here are some of the groups I got the other day.  The splatter target was yesterday and the upper right group was the following:
JSB Exact Diablo 81.2gr @ 50 yds.
1- 920.8
2- 911.7
3- 903.3
4- 895.6
5- 875.2
6- 869.4
7- 851.8

So far this rifle is growing on me.  It's my first big bore (except for the faulty Bulldog I had a couple of months ago) so there is a learning curve.  Do do these numbers and groupings look to be normal for a newbie to big bore???

This is what I got with .357 Evanix barrel, those 88 grain FTs that I linked at 50M.

Wow!  Would love to have that kind of grouping.  Did you find a magic velocity for those or just shooting at max fill?  Or is that your regulated .357?  Would you sell me a hand full of those to try out???  I'd like to get into casting my own but too many irons in the fire right now...

It's not about the ammo, rather the barrel quality. The barrel I have was of rather poor quality, if it was a good barrel results would have been better. Those groups were shot with slightly lapped and recrowned barrel. It still had an incredibly tight spot where the breech part ends that collected lead in excessive amounts. I would suggest you to have a look at the crown and recrown if necessary. Also push a pellet trough to find tight spots and lap them out.

Thanks RKR.  Hmmm, now just have to figure out how this thing comes apart...  There doesn't seem to be a lot of tech info on this model, especially with the integrated moderator.

I got mine as a basket case but it shouldn't be that hard. Screw off the muzzle brake and then twist off the shroud as it's threaded at the breech end as well. Then remove the grub screws on top of the breech, Blizzard model had two grub screws on top of each other in the same hole. Then you can pull of the barrel. At that point you can also remove the air bottle and valve block (two grub screws at the bottom of the monoblock) and decide if you want to increase the TP size and modify the valve block  for more power. .357 should be able to go to very close close to 200 fpe (bottle feed is the restriction that needs to be modified) while .45 can go close to 300 fpe. Personally I ditched the shroud and associated rail system as they add about 2 pounds of extra weight with little to no functionality:

Cool.  Thanks again.  I'll dig into that over the next couple of days.  Yeah, figured out the shroud.  The moderator and shroud are one piece, or seems to be, held on by 2 set screws at the end of the barrel and just in front of the breach.  I noticed some lines forming around the shroud and determined is was loosening due to vibration (I guess).  The set screws were carving a groove in the shroud.  I made it worse by tightening the shroud back without loosening the set screws.  Oops.  Will check the barrel.
