I'm stoked to FINALLY be able to join this forum. I pickup up a few old beauties recently:
Blue Streak
Crosman 160 Pellgun
Crosman 140
Crosman 66 PowerMaster (my gun as a kid - now a parts gun as it's missing a bunch of screws :( )
(Sorry for the lousy pic, I haven't yet had time to mess with them much. I've spent most of my free time drooling over the powder burners from the 1800's to early 1900's. I'm totally clueless on what to do with these. I'll probably start with a Ballistol wipedown and then just put them away, as I don't want to do any harm to them. I wish there was a GTA for powderburners!)
The top 3 guns are in fair condition. Most of the metal work is pretty good, with some light lust. All of the wood is in good condition but UGLY. I don't think any of them have been opened up, as they've been stored for at least 30 years. The PowerMaster was mine, and the others belonged to my dad.
I hope to have some funds this summer to maybe take a stab a restoring 1 or more of them. My first stop will probably be Tim. Any tips/advice are welcome.
Thanks!

You may get lucky and just lube the piston's , after a good cleaning. And see if they hold pressure
-
None of them are holding Zach?
-
WOW !!! That's a nice haul! Talk about hitting the lottery.
-
Nice ! As mentioned, try a little oil first & one may come back to life.
-
very cool. I don't think the wood looks bad on the sheridan. Forearm looks like it has some nice figure to it.
I don't know anything about the crosmans, but as others said, you could try putting some oil in these places and then letting it sit for a day or two, then see what happens.

based on the bolt and front sight, looks like the Sheridan dates to about 1961 or 1962.
enjoy!

Welcome, Zack! Nice find! 8)
-
Congrats Zack!
Some nice ones for sure, your Dad had good taste!
-
Heck nice ! yeah lube em up and shoot them , they weren't built to sit around ya know ;)
-
Very nice Zach! Nothing more fun than tinkering with classics.
-
That's a great vintage collection to start off with. Don't dismiss the 66! That's the air rifle that got me back into this hobby. Actually someone left a broken 2100 in my garage. Parts from Crosman were incredibly inexpensive. It's now one of my favorites and may be the most accurate airgun I own.
-
The fact that they have been in the family all this time makes it even better.
-
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!
I haven't tried pumping them because I was afraid to do any damage. It sounds like I should get some secret sauce, lube the heck out of them, and then try pumping/shooting them. I need a new bolt o-ring for the streak before I can do this. I may also need one for the 140, as I don't see an o-ring on the bolt. Are there still parts diagrams for these guns?
It's also good to know that I can still get parts for the PowerMaster. I woud NOT have expected this!
Are there any gold-standard tutorials for opening up and repairing these guns, or should I just search around for what looks applicable? I searched for the Crosman 140 and was rewarded with a TON of good posts.
Thanks guys!
-
"lube the heck out of them" isn't really a correct term, as it will only take about 5 drops of oil per gun :), secret sauce would probably be best, but non detergent 30 weight oil or air tool oil would work fine as well
Most of the screws on the Powermaster will be #6 flat head I believe, but you could look at the parts breakdown of a current 66/Recruit/Torrent and get parts from them, the screws will be $1.15 a piece so a hardware store would be cheaper... The only things that have changed from the old to new 66's (including the Torrent and Recruit) is the receiver halves to accept the pellet clips (and they used to be metal, then changed to plastic at some point, then changed to the pellet clips around 2000) which changes the bolt and the plastic transfer port block mostly. Everything else is the same, you could even hot rod it up a bit with a flat top valve and piston for a 13XX pistol... that will get it up to around 750fps...

Some good Sheridan info is had right here. http://ujays.net/repair-manual-v4.3.pdf (http://ujays.net/repair-manual-v4.3.pdf)

Before I had time to research all the details, this video was all I needed to resealed by old Crosman 140, bought a cheap seal kit at Ebay and watched this video and Part2 a few times.
Even though the gun holds/shoots/pumps well, after testing it's not shooting at maximum possible power because I didn't swap the pump cup. I will rectified this later. So my advice to you is to pick up a premium Mac1 kit and replace the pump cup with the modified piston included with kit (easy to do), and save yourself the time and extra tear down effort down the road, most likely, after all this time, your Pump cup has probably hardened and will not give you maximum FPS.

Some transmisson doctor can maybe get ya shootin. I've got quite a few guns to shoot both pump & co2 including a 160 & 400 & 140-1400 cr. and a bunch of daisy msp,s. Use lots and clean em up later. Roll some down the tp to. Sure don,t hurt to try and only a couple bucks at wmart. No luck on the apache tho.Oh well hafta go into that one again when the roundtoit list shortens up :-\.Anyway
-
Wow, thanks for all of the extra tips guys!!! I have quite a bit of info to go on now.
My son and I were at a local gun show this morning. We happened to pick up a silver streak for $38! ;D The forearm has a good chunk out of it, but the metal is in great shape. We were both pretty excited. I think when we go to do a rebuild, we will probably use the blue streak stock and forearm, and the silver streak action.

Here is a better pic. The metal on the silver streak really is nice. Also, the wood on the blue streak is better than I originally thought. I would like to combine the best of the 2 guns if they are compatible. I don't see any serial numbers - they must be underneath the wood. I'll try and date the 2 guns and see if the stocks/forearms are interchangeable.
I was talking with the guy who sold me the silver streak and I asked him if he had any more vintage guns for sale. He said he picked up about 50 ( :o ) in an estate sale. He said they were mostly really old daisy bb guns. I asked if he had any old Weihrauch's or feinwerkbau's. He said the didn't know, but that he would give me a call. I'm not looking for any investment guns, just old shooter's that can be revived. I'm REALLY hoping he calls me back.
Thanks!

She sure is a looker. Your rear sight looks interesting. If you have a chance can you post some close up pix of both sides of the magazine?
You may already know about this link, but just incase; http://ujays.net/sheridanc.html (http://ujays.net/sheridanc.html)
BTW; love to hear about those bank busting deals ;)
-
You made out great!! That silver is an oldie. We'll both are, but that Silver has the rear sight welded on like my 51 Silver. The straight bolt handle. Just says "Silver Streak" on the side. So there won't be a serial number. The super slender stock and forearm.
The chunk cut of of your forearm I believe is intentional. I've seen this now on a lot of older rifles. Have had a few myself with this. It's always, always, sanded nice and have been refinish and very well done. Ive noticed my fingers or thumb depending on being righty or lefty fit right into the cut-out for easier removal of the forearm on higher pump counts. Like I said I never see it just jacked up or raw looking it's always been prepped and finished. Islam do see them cracked at this location. I believe this is just from pumping, maybe over pumping? The slapping may just be to much over 50+ years if done with no intention of slowing the smack.

I'll tell you what, the thought process & design that went into these Dan's never ceases to amaze. Something about the combination of nickel & bluing of that rear sight, & the high comb certainly sparks my interest.
Thanx for the pic!

I hadn't seen that site, thanks! Based on the info there, it looks like mine is a 51 -52 Silver Streak. Pretty cool for $38!!! The Blue Streak looks like a 61 - 62.

Unfortunately, the wood chunk out of the forearm is definitely from a break, and is not sanded/finished.
Rob - I always drool over the gun (especially the wood) in your avatar - what is that?

Yep, that was it. We were there at opening and quickly cruised the halls looking for any vintage airguns. The gun was listed at $50, and I offered the guy $38, since it was all the cash that I had on me. He [very thankfully!] agreed. Not 5 seconds after he agreed, someone came up and said they wanted to buy that gun. The seller told him it was already sold! My son and I left feeling pretty good.

The top rifle in the avatar pic is a 342 and the bottom is my 312. 342 wears a Williams and the 312 wears a 273 peep.

I finally finished rebuilding the Silver Streak. I had a few challenges but everything went well overall. I stripped down the gun and installed a Baker Airguns kit and a new Mac1 Steroid rod (the original rod was the first generation that won't fit the current pump cups). Also, the valve guide tab broke off, but I was able to glue it back on using J-B weld. The existing bolt lug was a little worn, so I ordered 2 from Mac1. Neither of them were threaded far enough to be able to use, so I had to re-use the old one. This is the only thing that bugs me about the re-build. I really would have liked a new bolt lug installed. Since it's a 1st gen bolt, I'm guessing it's not compatible with the current bolt lugs. The internals were lightly lubed with Secret Sauce. Other than some minor issues, the parts went together great.
After the new parts were installed and I verified that they held 1 pump of air overnight, I cleaned the exterior metal on the streak, polished it with Flitz, and installed 1 coat of Renaissance Wax. I also sanded down the stock and forearm and completely removed the existing finish. I put on 4 coats of TruOil and a final coat of pastewax. I'm thrilled with how it came out. I chronied the gun with .20cal JSB's as follows:
3 pumps: 416 fps
4 pumps: 488 fps
5 pumps: 541 fps
6 pumps: 589 fps
7 pumps: 626 fps
8 pumps: 637 fps
At 8 pumps, the gun still held a small amount of air after firing. Does this mean the hammer spring is a little weak? Anyway, this will just be used as an occasional plinker, mostly at 4 or 5 pumps. It will mainly stay in the safe. I still have to test the gun for accuracy, but I'm not too worried.
Now that I am a little more familiar with these pumpers, I'm looking forward to doing the Blue Streak. The wood is especially ugly, but with some nice figuring that looks like it can be uncovered. The metal is also more worn. This one will likely be the Streak that gets used more often.
Thanks for all of the help and advice!

CONGRATS!
She's a Beauty for sure.
-
wow, great job! great velocity results also. my two stock streaks with 8 pumps do 625 with 14.3 grain pellets and 685 with 11.4 grain, so your numbers are probably just about in line with that.
also, seems like I've seen older streaks with newer bolts installed. the C9 and C9A bolts would definitely NOT work as they are longer, however, possibly any model C bolt would work? The later bolts also had an o-ring around the base of the probe, which might be nice to have also. My '51 bolt does not have an o-ring. I know you are just wanting to replace the lug, but if you cannot do that, I was thinking maybe the whole bolt could be replaced.

Zack...Golly Gee...I'm in Love with YOUR Guns ! Very Very Nice ! Best Regards - Tom
