I've had a rather nice piece of walnut in my shop for some time now. I've always thought I'd make a full stock for one of my rifles with it. Well, with temperatures in the 70's here in Missouri, I had to spend some time enjoying "doors open shop time" and embarked on a project that was a bit of a pain in the Southern Hemisphere.
I decided my HW97 K was worthy of a new stock, and being a lefty shooter, custom fit was the way to get what I wanted. Here is my pictorial progress so far.

The stock wet with paint thinner to look at the grain.

Very nice indeed, that's a beautiful piece of wood that you've got there to work with and it's really shaping up nice !!!
-
Thanks all,
I've ordered a Morgan adjustable butt pad for it. I actually have one but it's too big and did not want the bright aluminum base, so I ordered a black one.
I forgot to mention that the accent wood on the grip and forestock are coco bolo. I'm hoping it turns very dark and perhaps almost black with time. I over sanded in some spots and ruined my design a bit. Not really pleased with the pistol grip part right now. I purposely wanted a very vertical grip but I wanted more angle on the accent. I may change it still???
-
That's an AWESOME job!!
Being a wood worker myself I know what kind of effort it took to make that! Love the Coco bolo inlays!
-
Mercy, that turned out well. First stock? You might make some good money on the side doing this kind of thing if you enjoy it, that is a beautiful stock. Nice work brother.
-
WOW! was the first thing that popped into my head.
-
It looks really great, nice work!
-
Excellent work.

VERY NICE!!! I love walnut stocks... yet have none :( ...yet ;D
If I ever get one, I might have to ask Nitrocrushr to order it for me - that dude wins the stock lottery every time!!! But I'm not jealous, Steve ;D >:( ;D ::)

That's absolutely beautiful. You have a lucrative career as an airgun stockmaker calling you. Who needs a lucrative job with good pay and benefits????

This was my first attempt at a full stock. I've made a buttstock for a Remington mod 11, and I've inletted a Boyds blaster stock for my D34, but this was the first full stock. It was interesting and challenging to say the least.
Lol, I'd go broke making stocks for a living. I think I have 20 hours in this one. Maybe the next one would go faster, IF there is ever a next one...

Sorry to bring this back up but I did not like the color, some of the lines, and the feel of my stock. I changed the angle on the pistol grip and slimmed down the wrist. I stripped the finish and stain and refinished to a more pleasant color and used less lacquer so you could still see some grain. I also made the gloss more satin as I did not like how shiny it was the first time.
::) still not sure I'm done...

That's even better than before!

LOL.... you can bring that back up as many times as you like. Very Nice !!

G O R G E O U S...

Well done!
I liked both versions but I understand about making changes to it also. There comes a point where it's going to be as good as it gets.
What did you use for a finish? I like the looks of it.
-
In a word: OUTSTANDING!
-
BEAUTIFUL, Glad you brought it back up, I missed it the first time.
2nd finish is indeed better than before. Good eye.
Now I just need to figure out how I am going to send you one of my 100 year old walnut trees to make me one.
-
Thank you all for the kind words. I may make another one some day when I forget how frustrating this one was :P

Thank Brett, I used catalyzed lacquer (pre cat) on both versions. Second one was straight satin.

Hoosier Daddy, if you have 100 year old walnut trees, you could sell the tree and buy a rifle with nice factory stock, and lots of pellets. 8)

I am 54.
My Great Grand Father planted the originals and I live on his dirt via inheritance. now there are about 30 good sized trees.
Figure it as my pension someday but almost seems sacrilege to intentionally cut one down.
My mower sure hates them for the nuts, but I let several strategically selected saplings go every spring.

Renewable resources my friend. If no one cut trees, I'd be out of a job and we'd all have synthetic stocks :(
-
Wow!!! Stunning!!! You are an ARTIST!!!

How did you inlet the blank to receive the action?
I have made some stocks. I inletted with a router, router table, and drill press. I have thought about taking on a stock for my HW77 but I haven't had the time or motivation lately, especially since it's spring now and I have other more urgent things to tend to at the moment. I hope to some day....

Good morning Brett,
Pretty much the same as you, I use a router and drill press but I don't like using a router table as I cannot see the cut I'm making. Instead, I prefer to use a deck and straight edge locked into my jaw horse. I didn't take pictures of the setup I used on the HW97K but here is one of the laminate stock I inletted for my D34. It's the same process.
