Title: Lubing cast bullets for airguns
Post by: Aerotulz on January 08, 2017, 10:49:01 PM
An open question to those casters and shooters of .257, .308 and more. I hear repeatedly about 10wt silicone oil as a bullet lube. My question is how are you applying it to your bullets?

I use this CRC Dry Silicone spray. Put bullets on ziplock bag, spray those bullets close bag and blend carefully. Then I let aerosol fade away.

I would not use any mineral oil etc. products..

Does this increase muzzle velocity ?

I believe that lube makes the fps more consistent IMO, and decreases lead depositing.

Easier to keep barrel clean.Prevents lead sticking... And works for sizing bullets

I use 10 weight RC car shock oil and put it on a foam pad in a pellet container. Several drops of oil and roll the bullets around so they are evenly coated. A bit messy but surely reduces the lead in my Barrel. Get the oil on eBay

I also use the 10 weight shock oil for my 257 seems to work well.

Thanks Ray! Rolling the bullets on a pellet tin foam seems very easy and is what I was asking for. Thanks!

Exactly! I put the bullets I want to shoot into a normal JSB tin with the foam in it, put 4-5 drops on the bullets, and roll. Just as we did with the Slick-50 one shot for pellets. ;)

Been doing this for several years not. Tried many lubes, just like the 1 shot. Nothing works as well as the 10wt shock oil so far. Which I know is strange, as silicone is not a good lube for metal.
Stranger things have happened I guess. LOL!!!

Roachcreek/Unrepented sinner/ Charlie is the one who discovered the accuracy advantage in the 10wt shock oil.  8)

ha i do the same  put oil in the jsb tin also    you know i herd  a guy once tell me that it made a pretty good increse in bn gun so  you know its gotta help a air rifle they   have a lot less force than the powder burner pushing on the bullet   oil   helps take away  some of that  drag off of the bullet from the bore .

0il  helps seal them smaller diameter bullets to  like shooting .356 instead of .357

and the seals and  o rings like it.

Lube is mostly useful for firearms because the heat of the burning powder + the velocity of the bullet causes the lead to melt and deposit onto the barrel surface.  The lubrication helps prevent this.  At airgun velocities and without the superheated gas behind the bullet I really wouldn't imagine that there would be a need for lubrication.

And the comment about it helping seals/orings may be valid, but if you lube the pellet/bullet what orings or seals is it likely to come into contact with anyway?  Possibly some slight transfer may occur when the pellet/bullet passes the breech seal/oring but I would rather directly oil that as a maintenance regemin anyway...

I was thinking the same thing. If I put a lubed bullet in my barrel and shot. How many O-rings and seals are in my barrel???

I've also read many posts where people have said lube actually negatively affected accuracy.  I'm sure that's on a case by case basis though because even from one manufacturer each barrel can be slightly different.  If the bullet seats tight into the barrel, some light lube might reduce its drag....

Reduced drag lessens leading, which unlike shooting pellets, where a bit of leading improves accuracy, it is detrimental to shooting bullets. and it builds up FAST!

Many of the long range shooters in bullet firing AG's have found that using 10wt silicone shock oil for RC cars improves both accuracy and lessens barrel cleaning intervals. It is well proven. ;)

(On a side note, silicone helps "O" rings seal better, rather than harming them. Along with giving them a longer life.  A win-win)! 8)

I purchace mine thru ebay or amazon as RC Shock oil, by Lucal Oil. It is inexpensive, and does the job.

Lubed some pellets with silicone spray and shot them today. On a rock solid rifle rest at 15 yards.Seems I notice a 'Slight' improvement in grouping. And what use to be (not so friendly pellet weights/designs) are also grouping better. ;D
Gun used= New Gamo   Whisper Fusion Pro .22 w/about 125 pellets shot through it.
