Title: Gamo Magnum .22
Post by: canadian_shooter on January 01, 2017, 03:54:45 PM
It finally arrived! Drove 3 hrs through a snow storm to pick it up too, but was worth it.  ;D
Opened, inspected and cleaned bore. Ran about 50 shots through it of Crossman HP and Piranha (both 14.3 gr), then 10 shots of H&N Baracuda domes (21.14 gr) and H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme (19.09 gr). Shooting at 10 meters with open sights hit everything aimed at. Punched through 1-3/4" wood board (cleanly!) also blew through 2" phone book! Too cold and too much snow to bother installing and sighting in scope at this point. Will keep you all posted. I am very pleased with this rifle. Fit and finish is extremely nice. Trigger is crisp and consistently predictable. I don't mind the 50+ cocking effort (30 years of being a mechanic kinda toughens you up) I don't really even notice (crossbow seems tougher). The gas ram is great, there really isn't much recoil and just a 'thud' when shot. I have had lots of springers over the years and this gas ram would have been great back in the day! I don't have a chrony but my son-inlaw is getting one as he reloads for his .45 acp so when he does I'll be borrowing it.  ;)
Anyone thinking of getting one of these rifles should not hesitate, you won't be disappointed. Off to "play" some more. Here bunny, bunny!

Glad you like it, you need to brew a big pot of coffee and sit in your basement/garage and run the rest of the time of CPHP or Piranhas through the gun before you work on groups....

Oh ya!  ;D Been doing that all week  ;D Have almost emptied at in of the CPHP and Piranhas! Saving the "good" ones for grouping. Also picked up a tin of Crow Magnums. I like these for hunting use.  ;)

So I have an odd request. Does anyone know if you can change the stock out on this gun and use something like a hornet maxxim stock? Op could you possibly take some clear pics of the top of the gun where the barrel breaks?

The compression tube on this gun is 33mm, you would have to use a similarly sized stock to fit.

What other stocks may fit? I want a sporter style stock. Not too fond of the hole type stocks.

This one should fit: http://www.gamousa.com/product.aspx?product=Hunter%20Extreme%20Rifle%20Stock&productID=397 (http://www.gamousa.com/product.aspx?product=Hunter%20Extreme%20Rifle%20Stock&productID=397)

Kfxguy - Do you still require a photo of top or has your initial question been answered?

It wouldn't hurt. Give me more options. I'm trying to piece together the gun I want because gamo doesn't sell it. I'm not fond of the stocks with holes in them personally so I'd like to fit a better looking synthetic stock to it.

Thanks! I really wonder if that tube will fit in a standard gamo stock without much grinding. I appreciate the pics!

Thx, I should have specified that I prefer synthetic. Sorry. I'm clumsy and a wood stock doesn't fair well with me. I dropped (it slide off the table) my Winchester 800x the other day and scared the wood all up :(

Glad to hear about your new rifle, I just bought one yesterday and I`m trying to find all the info I can about it. FYI anyone interested I found it on sale at Midway USA for $223.99 but the 22 cal is on back order. Due back in stock 3/8/17...

I am sending my hatsan 95 back due to trigger failure and random firing which is so sad because I really liked that gun but it`s the 2nd one to give me trouble for different issues in just one month...

Kenny~

Sorry to hear about the Hatsan. You won't be disappointed with the Magnum. I really like this rifle. I will be posting some chrony results in a week or 2 .Just waiting for snow to go away. Still have nearly 4 ft the &^^&!

I look forward to hearing more about the magnum! Mine is on back order so I`m guessing it will be a week or two before I get my hands on it.

Some Chronograph results with the Gamo Magnum. Not the best conditions to do the tests but couldn't wait. Was -20 degrees C during tests. (yes that is a minus in front of the 20). I don't have a light kit yet for the chrony so had to be outside.

14.3 gr (crosman premier ultra mags) 940 fps
14.3 gr (crosman piranha and hollow points) 925 - 930 fps
14.4 gr (Gamo PBA Bullet - copper) 900 fps (very tight loading)
15.43 gr (Gamo Magnum, Masterpoint and Hunter) 860 fps
15.74 gr (Stoeger X-Hunt)  870 fps
15.89 gr (JSB Exact Jumbo) 870 fps
17.00 gr (Predator Metalmag) 860 fps
18.21 gr (Beeman Crow Magnum) 765 fps
19.09 gr (H&N Hunter Extreme) 767 fps
21.14 gr (H&N Baracuda) 700 fps
22.00 gr (Gamo TS-22)   700 fps

These are all the average of 6 shots each pellet. (would have done more shots but too "dang" cold out - will revisit this when it warms up) Also have some Gamo PBA Platinum on order to test.
When it warms up here (April or May! LOL) I will do some accuracy tests also. At this point 20 - 25 yard shots have been very good with everything. Hope this is helpful to some of you if not at least interesting.
