I've had the maximus for about 2 months, and I'm finally ready to give my opinions on this gun. ( read that finally getting off my duff ).
I got out of pcp's a few years ago. I got tired of the trips to the dive shop, for air, and having to constantly stop to refill.
well, I got the itch, AGAIN, for a pcp. I narrowed my choices down to the disco, the maximus, and the offering from mrodair. I decided to get the maximus based on several criteria.
first, I love the look of the stock. it's slim, sexy, and being polymer, it's an all weather gun. also, I don't have to worry too much about getting scratches on it.
second, and probably the most important consideration, parts availability, and modability. being a crosman product, there is a ton of support, and aftermarket parts available. unfortunately, the same can't be said for the mrodair offering. that's too bad, because I really liked the look of that one, also.
third, and equally important, was the ability to hand pump the gun. no way was I going to dump another 600 bucks, or so, just to fill it.
I got the package deal, with the Benjamin pump, from pyramid air.
a lot of people consider this gun a "starter" pcp. I guess you could call it that, seeing as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get up and running. on the other hand, the accuracy and handling are on par with guns costing three times as much.
as it comes stock, the hammer spring is a little too long, to give a good shot count, so I clipped 2 coils, right off the bat. I also added an aftermarket brass trigger from Alchemy, and a home made hammer spring adjuster. ( I used a scope stop screw that had a flat "button" on the end. it doesn't stick out the back, and has enough adjustment to do it's job. ) after a little fiddling, the gun gives me a string of 30 shots, starting at just under 2,000psi., and stopping at 1,250psi., with the first shot at, or around 795-7, a high of 815, and an average of 811fps., ending at 795ish. most of the shots hover in the 809 - 813fps. area, with the first, and last 2, or 3 shots of the string blowing my average velocity.
box stock, it was giving 20 good shots, with an average of around 845fps., and using 1,000psi. to achieve it. still very acceptable, for a hunting gun.
accuracy is outstanding. crosman hollow points, from wally world are giving me ragged, one hole groups at 14 yards, in my basement range, and roughly 3/8th", 10 shot groups at 30 yards. the gun also likes the H&N hunter extremes, as well as the barracuda hollow points. oddly enough, it just refuses to shoot the RWS superdomes, that came with the package.
even out of the box, without any tinkering, I would definitely recommend this gun to anyone wanting a nice looking, lightweight, accurate pcp, that won't break the bank.

Agreed, and easy to pump up, even for this old guy. :D
-
Scott, I am glad we BOTH got good ones. I am very pleased with mine too. And I have recommended it to others often too.

I bought one about a month ago in 177 for my 10 year old grandson to move up from a 760 pumper to a PCP and bought it used off the American airguns classified site. It came with the metal trigger installed and a threaded muzzle adapter already on the barrel for a LDC which I had one on hand to fit the threads and it much quieter now. I installed a RVA I had also with a disco spring since the factory spring was way to stiff for him to cock and was even difficult for me to cock as well.
I have it tuned now to shoot JSB 10.34s at 880 up to 905 and back to 880 for 32 shots per 2000 fill and ending at 1100 psi. It is deadly accurate at 25 plus yards and he loves his new gun. Its still a bit long of a pull for him but he will grow into it so it should last him several years just as his 760 did. I have a Cothran bolt probe coming for it also so that when it arrives I will install it and do some other tuning tricks to get hopefully a few more shots with a flatter curve as well.
It was the parts availability and aftermarket support that made my decision to go with it instead of the Mrodair varmint as well. Just far easier to tune and mod with the gobs of part availability that crosman guns have which to me they are the small block chevy of the airgun world.

My son just un-wrapped his last night , No air in the tube , and a fast leak , t/g I have a compressor and tank set up, so he could get it set up and sighted in , guess today dad gets to go leak hunting. ::) Though I do like the platform and decided I got enough Christmas cash to get one for myself, or a parts gun haha.
Guess Im down the rabbit hole with these as I was with the 13xx's I had to buy lol

Bugger! Mine came with 800 psi and held that until I topped it to 2000 psi and held there for a week before use. You must have received the one destined for me - I returned a 2260 and a Legacy 1000 this year for various issues.

I Just finished fixing the external leaks to find out that yes I am now a crosman employee assembling the gun properly for them , hey It cost less than what I end up spending in the custom shop on a 13xx so why not tinker :)

two other things can be done to bring out the inherent accuracy of the maximus. first, get a second, ( or third ), barrel band. place it in front of the shroud that affixes the rear sight. this means you'll have to remove a little of the inside of the stock. I did mine with a dremel. it not only helps make the barrel stiffer, it also takes almost all the pressure off the tiny breech screw, and makes for a better transfer port seal.
second, if you have a problem with the slippery butt pad, do what I did. take some rustoleum spray bedliner, tape off anything you don't want bedlinered, and have at it. follow the directions for the finer finish. keep the can about two feet from the surface. apply several thin coats. it gives you a sandpaper-like finish. I guarantee it won't slide around on your shoulder.
if everything goes as planned, i'll be blooding it tomorrow. I gots me a taste for wabbit ;D

I set up one for my mom for Christmas with a Boyd's stock and that gun is so stinking accurate for a cheap gun. My mom loves it! She also got a Mrod trigger group and waiting on an adjuster and extended bolt from Mellon air but shoots great as is out of the box!

Thanks for the accuracy & traction tip.
I got the kids tore down and found 2 shredded o-rings on the gauge block, and the valve o-ring was nicked, also the valve was loose where it joins together.
been 24 hours and still holding ! 2000 PSI ;D

Guess I got lucky. Mine was holding 1000psi., when I unboxed it.
Got out for a little stroll in the woods, yesterday. Managed 3 fox squirrels, 2 grouse. No rabbits, though. The maximus is officially blooded ;D.
-
Very nice! I too just got 2 maximus as gifts for others and both held 1000psi for 3 days before I touched them so I was happy about that.
-
Definitely a nice hunting machine, cant wait to take mine out on safari, btw the one in hand now is my sons , I have another arriving by the weekend, we will see if i need a can of fix a flat or not ::)
I also have on order extra barrel bands and heavy duty breech screws.

I have the .177, no leaks so far. Killed a few nutters with it already. I am averaging between 970 and 980. Still stock. The only thing I have done is stick a TKO on it. Does well with the polymags. :D

Isn’t that a great feeling and a mixed bag too. Very nice.

Have had mine for quite a while now, still holding air and still harvesting squirrels nicely :)
Enjoyed your review and agree with you that the rifle is a very sound purchase.

the only thing I've noticed is, when you take it out in the cold, ( 30 degrees, or so ) ,the pressure in the tube drops dramatically, ( roughly 250psi ). I'm guessing the change is so drastic due to the small volume of air available. I've been pumping mine up to 2200psi., before I take it out. that way, I have roughly 1950psi available, after it cools down. I just shoot it down to about 1500psi, before I take it back inside. I still get 20 shots within my fill zone, with no appreciable change in poi. the more I shoot this gun, the more I think I made the right choice.

I just picked up the .177. So far so good. I would like to add a scope yet still le able to use the plastic sights (I may be asking too much I know). I already have a set of see through high scope rings that I have never used. Any suggestions (inexpensive, easy to use on the fly as I have older eyes, shorter range up to a max of 75 yards or so). Any suggestions? Was looking at the UTG Bugbuster 3-9 x 32 as an example. A Walmart gift card is out of the wallet and ready for duty.
-
The bug busters work best 50 and under yards but they will reach out to 100 if you use your imagination ;)
I got the hunter version that came with a decent center point 6 x 40 a/o its a nice weight scope for such a light gun.
-
a 3-9 center point would be the ticket. you can get it at wally world. or, if you want a little more magnification, a 4-12 cp. I have a 1.5 - 4.5 x 32 tasco world class on mine. I wanted to keep the overall weight down. although I did add a little weight to the forestock, in the form of some .50 cal. round balls, epoxy.

Thank you Longhunter.
