Ive read wd40 works well after a good initial wipe down .. Ive seen a guy use gasoline ( not me ) and I was thinking purple power but that will ruin paint.

White gas ( Coleman fuel / naptha ) does a bang up removal job.

And it doesn't have that lingering aroma of (gas station) 'pump gas'.

Simple green, spray nine, or any other cleaner/degreaser and boiling water.

will walmart have it? or is that a specialty item, thanks!

Walmart should have it in the camping section. Called Coleman fuel or camp stove fuel.
If your walmart is big enough they might even have it near the paint. It would be called naptha in that case.

I have purchased many military weapons that were heavily coated with cosmoline.
There is probably no need to buy something special. WD-40 or any similar spray type oil that has a bit of solvent in it will work fine. Spray it down and wipe it off with a rag a couple of times, then work on the crevices with a tooth brush. This method will also work on the stock without harm.
There is really no need to strip it clean with a strong solvent.
