Title: Umarex Throttle .22 review (update)
Post by: erock on November 30, 2016, 07:11:46 PM
Well I got a chance today to run some more pellets through this new Umarex rifle. I ended up replacing the scope mount, as I could not keep the picatinny clamp screws tight. Problem solved. I found out that she likes to be held firmly, as opposed to the "artillery hold". It is pellet sensitive. It favors the "boxed" Crosman Premiers 14.3g (doesn't it figure...). It also likes equally well, the RWS Superdome Field Line in 14.5g, and VERY close behind it, the Beeman Kodiak tapered dome 21.1g.  It clearly does NOT like the department-store version of Crosman pellets. With the RWS food, I put 4 pellets through the same hole at 12 yards, with the 5th pellet making a comma out of that hole !!  Ten shots could be covered with a dime. Not bad for a sub-$200 airgun. I will eventually explore replacement trigger options. Something with a lighter pull and release.  I got spoiled with my other guns.
Regarding the earlier comments on the unique shape or profile of the Breech block, I have attached a picture of the profile of that, with a machinists square to show angle. Because of the tapered profile, it gives the illusion that the pellet hole is oval shaped. It clearly is not, but makes seating the pellet a more deliberate action, with the face not being squared up.  Perhaps this is something unique to Umarex rifles ??  I don't know, as this is my first from them.   All in all, had a blast with it this afternoon.  She's a consistent shooter, with the right pellets. It'll give my higher-priced selections a run for their money in accuracy !!

Some Diana air rifles have slanted breaches.

If you use a pellet seater, it will seat it deep enough to not damage the skirt when you close the breach, and it will also give you a consistent seat.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll try it !!

Kenny of the Youtube page Myairgunreviews tested this rifle in .22. His had problems shooting the heavier pellets of that caliber. He voiced his opinion on the cause of the problem here:

How did your gun handle the heavier pellets?
