Title: Dad's buying a PRod - Scope and Rings you like?
Post by: drewciferpike on October 30, 2016, 04:19:45 PM
Title says it all: My dad is buying a PRod for the cabin, and before I click the "order" button, I'd like to have everything in one purchase.

So, which rings and scope work great with this little gun?
EDIT: It will be used as a carbine.

I always use BKLs for my rifles, but I'd like to hear what works for you. I'd like the scope to just clear the mag.

Drew,
Are you going to use it as a pistol or a carbine? Two totally deferent set-ups for which scopes to use.

Sorry for not being clear: It will be used as a carbine. Edited original to reflect...

Also, how do you get those giant JSBs to work for you? They shotgun out of my S510 and Talon.

I got the Prod with the AR stock adapter and stock already installed and thats the way I would get it if I did it again. I have a Weaver Kaspa 3 - 10x on mine and it works great but I think a 1-4 or 1-6 would be even better. The Kaspa is fairly small and light but one of those 1-4 or 1-6 scopes would be perfect. Leupold and Vortex both make one under $250 and Leupold has one under $200.

Drew, I used the Hawke Vantage 2-7x32 (non IR version with wire reticle) on my p-rod and was a perfect little scope for that gun out to probably 35-40 yards.  Think I used leapers medium mounts.

Medium scope mounts work great and clear the mag and I have a beast of a scope mounted on my Prods & 1720T, BSA FFP 4-14, 44mm.

The 25.39gr JSB monsters didn't shot well at the time I was setting up for high power, later on I discovered I had a bur in the barrel that was causing the pellets to shoot a over the place. I haven't gone back to that 12" barrel to shot the JSB monsters. When I get back for a service call in KY next week I will try out the monsters in it at about 30 fpe @ 25yards to see how they shoot if weather gods allow me too.

AR stocks rock to, check out RAI products. I have them mounted on the Prods too.
If I was going to change scopes I would go with this scope mount if it was a large scope for the gun.

My BSA ffp scope has a large turret assembly that is wider then the inside edge of the rings by 1/8"  :-[

Check out reply #12 for a cool looking Prod (PBguns) is bad @$$

Whichever scope you get, be sure the parallax correction goes down to 10 yards.  If you want a very inexpensive scope, the BassPro Pursuit X1 Rimfire 3-9x works great.  I got one just to try and it has turned out to be a great combo with my PRod carbine.

I ordered a Hawk 2-7x32 for him, so he should be happy. He's not looking for 80-yard shots. I'm sure I'll get picky and want to put an LDC on it...

Should I even bother with messing with TP size and bstaley, or should I just tune it to be happy with 14.3s or FTTs?

I'd tune on a Bstaley.  It really doesn't take that long and with the increase in shots, power, and accuracy due to ES tightening it's worth it IMO.  That said, if he's cruising around the cabin smashing cans and the occasional nutter within 25 yards then the factory tune isn't all that bad.  If he wants a little hunter, then Bstaley all the way.

In stock tune, it's plenty quiet without an LDC.  You Bstaley and it will start to bark.

Do the bstaley mod and open the TP to .109 - .110. Still cant believe the shot count I get on my Prod.

OK Drew.
1. Get some good tuning info here and on the Marauder Forum.
2. The carbine stock that comes with the pistol has to be modified a bit.
You may want to look into a AR15 type stock with adaptor.
Note: PA sells them already with this option installed.
3. The carbine stock is too low for a scope and has to be at least 1.5 inches higher.
A good gauge is the HS/HT adjustment port.
4. Any scope is good but I would suggest the Leopold EFR 3-9X which was designed for the .22lr. Excellent optics, of course.

Here is a picture of my 1720T which is how the dad should set his up...LDC and all. See the aluminum billet on top of the stock. This is needed for proper cheek weld and eye alignment. You can use a wooden dowel or PVC pipe if you go this route:

Drew,
I got to shoot the giant JSB's today. Shotgun pattern at 25 yards the my Prod w/20" MM HF barrel (7 shots in 1 3/4") spray.
I zeroed at 14 yards and the pellets where touching, at 25 yards I could see the pellets corkscrewing in circular motion the air.

The stock stock does not need any modification.  It works just fine.  It's a different weld, not exactly a cheek weld, more of a jaw weld, but it works none the less.  I actually really like where it lines up for me.  It's not too low for a scope either.  Lots of people run the factory stock just as is.  Lot's also like the riser like BarnyDaddy, I'm just not one of them.  I am running UTG medium rings, and a UTG 3-9x40 AO IR scope.  Rings and scope together <$100.

LDP, what is your Bstaley count?  I get 24 shots, 720-740-720.

As others have said open the TP with a 7/64 drill bit and do the bstaley mod and you may want to think about changing the spring to a stiffer one. I went with a McMaster Carr. The stock spring will weaken in time so if you open her for mods may as well change the spring. Also the FTTs in the 5.55 head size are very good in the prod.

I need to check my post on it but if memory is correct it was close to 30 shots @ 13 fpe but I just shoot 3 magazines and repeat. I might be able to play with it and improve it but 3 mags at that power with such a tiny carbine is exactly what I wanted.
