I just noticed that the barrel shroud on my RWS 48 will rotate fairly easily if you twist it. Is this normal for this rifle?
-
Apprently so, Matt.
The one on my 52 does too...😜
-
The shrouds will normally rotate when twisted. The front sight mount/muzzle weight is what keeps the shroud in place....if the muzzle weight starts to come loose the shroud will spin freely, just loosen set screws in the muzzle weight and push it back against the shroud while tightening the set screws, that will keep it snug.
After shooting a 48/52/54 for awhile the muzzle weight will sometimes start to move and loosen the shroud....when this happens the POI will also start to change....tighten it and everything will be good again.

Great info. Thank you very much!

Great info. I need to do this on my '56TH as well.

OK, I'm resurrecting this old thread where I noticed the d48 barrel shroud rotated. I'm now interested in removing the front sight housing. I backed out the set screws no problem but the housing would not budge with a decent amount of force applied to it.

I did this once before on hatsan's front sight and it really got ugly quick with deforming the plastic. Perhaps a bit of heat from a hair drier might help? Any advice would be great.
Thanks!

Just the one screw holding it on so, get a piece of wood and smack from the back.
Should pop off.
Probably dried oil keeping it on...

Could there be a second screw under the sliding part of the sight?
Edit: I have also seen two screws stacked in a hole to securely hold something in place. Have you completely removed the screw you loosened and looked inside the hole?

I don't think so... but I'll double-check mine.

the one on my 52 rotates as well. i wondered about that

Mine only had the one screw. And I think I was able to twist it off. You can size a crescent wrench to close to shroud diameter and whack the crescent wrench with a hammer. Put some tape on the shroud so it doesn't get scratched.
I can send you a pic if you want of the barrel with the sight off. Probably as was already mentioned by barnydaddy, oil may have hardened and is now acting like glue.

Looks like the barrel has grooves in it so I would not try and twist it.
Just put a block of wood behind it and smack the block with a hammer...
Good luck
-
My shrouds on my older mod. 48 and 52 both rotated and will slide off if you remove sight. They were in the way of the scope picture so I wanted them off. Wack'd em both with wood block and mallet then took a older model FAL flash hider and it was a good fit on barrel, so I put a bit of green lock tight on barrel under sleeve and wack'd the Fal hider on, it fit perfect and holds all in place and is not in scope picture. Been there now for about 15 years and has not moved. Don't lose sight assembly. Just in case.
-
Thanks for the input everyone!
-
I meant to say whack the wrench in the breech to muzzle direction against the sight. Not like you're unscrewing the barrel. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

I follow you. You're suggesting hitting it in a direction parallel to the barrel. That's pretty much what I did with my hatsan 135. That sucker was on TIGHT. It wasn't very pretty after I got it off...
-
Yes. I actually had to get a muzzle break off last night. I recently bought 2 15mm breaks. One for my 300S Mini and one for my RWS 48. The 48 barrel is a tad bigger than I thought. So I tried sanding out the interior of the break but got impatient and put it about an inch on the barrel. No King Kong force. I just pushed it on and gave up sanding for the night.
Yesterday when I tried to get it off it wouldn't budge. So I whacked it off using the Crescent wrench.

Just got a 48 and mounted Hawke Airmax scope on it with the UTG D06 droop rail and my favorite Leupold rings. Noticed the shroud a bit loose so loosen front set screw on muzzle sight housing, tapped sight housing firmly into the shroud with 2 pieces of wood, and then tightened the setscrew up again.
Since I have no need for the open sights at all, my question is would completely removing the shroud and front sight assembly to just have bare barrel have any negative consequences? I imagine it would be better since you don't have to worry about a shroud which works its way loose eventually an changes impact when it changes tension on the barrel at various stages of loosening. Would also take some weight off the front and shift balance back some, which the 48 really needs.

Sorry,
Don't mean to hijack, but I understand that this barrel shroud will also fit on a HW barrel. For all those that want to sleeve their HW barrels. ;D
