Title: Suggested basic equipment to bring to HFT shoot?
Post by: gokidd on October 05, 2016, 04:11:33 PM
Hello, all:
What else do I need to bring to the range for my first Hunter Field Target shoot?
I searched but didn't find a lot of detail, other than:

Gun with scope (12x magnification max) and pellets
Trajectory card for use of MIL Dot ranging system
Safety glasses
Shooting sticks
Properly sized bucket (or such) upon which to sit
Clothing to suit weather

Is it likely that I need a soft gun case to rest my rifle on?
Shooting mat or such?
Pellet pouch?
Binoculars?

I've never seen a match in person and have been told I can only visit a certain event after the shooting concludes, so as not to disrupt the shooters.
OH. I will be purchasing a fake nose and glasses with which I can hide my rugged good looks in the future.

You pretty much have the necessities. I like something to rest my gun on, so I made a box that had a yoke to rest my gun on and rope handles to carry it with. I also made a place to put my shooting sticks, so it had everything I needed. A pellet pouch is handy but not a necessity. The cheap crosman ones are fine (although they have recently changed them and not for the better, but they are still handy).

You shouldn't need binoculars. Other things I like to keep in my bucket: Bug repellent, sunscreen, a lens cleaning cloth, a bottle of gatorade to hydrate and keep your blood sugar up, a few allen wrenches or other specialty items for your gun (fill probe?)

Most important thing to bring is a friendly attitude and a willingness to learn. Hope you have fun!

Yup ...
your rifle / pistol shooting Sub 20 ft lbs
Pellets and dope sheet for trajectory.
Bipod and a seat w/o a backrest.
Soft case or catty for toting & set gun upon at each lane.
Pending walking distance from Car, Air fills etc ... what else you way want to eat/drink while match is going on.

Really a pretty minimalist thing being easier less krap your carrying along lane to lane.

I'm hooked now after the first time I went last November. My next shoot is the SC fun shoot in Promise Land SC which is our defacto state match. Definitely bring a snack to keep you going lane to lane. Also practice your offhand shooting every time you shoot.
