Title: $9 shrouded barrel for QB78....
Post by: imadunatic on September 25, 2016, 07:20:49 PM
EDIT: Not discussing backyard-friendliness in any manner. Had discussed this with Dave and the mods prior to posting, this was approved but with limitations on discussion. Thanks for understanding!

Been trying to decide for awhile how I wanted to fit a shroud to the QB, looked at many websites, came up with costs ranging from $70 to infinity and while I was shooting my Benjamin Trail NP2 the other day it hit me that I might be able to fit that style of shroud to the QB. A quick disassembly led me to believe it was not only possible but fairly simple and a phone call to Crosman on Monday also confirmed that this would be the most cost effect effective shrouded barrel I was ever going to find.

Had to make a couple pieces:

The end barrel adapter was so I didn't have to cut threads on the barrel, I really wanted this to be something that would be easy to reverse if I decided it was not exactly what I wanted or it affected accuracy/velocity etc (my .177 NP2 is about 16.5 FPE and a tack driver so I was fairly confident this was going to be fine).

Don't judge my machining too harshly... did these in a major rush. Future versions will most likely be aluminum.

The only purchased pieces are are the plastic piece that threads onto the barrel adapter (which is shouldered to retained the shroud) and the shroud itself:

I personally think it looks much nicer than the yard sale cushions we bought to get another year or 2 out of our porch swing:

the machining is just fine , funny how anything airgun related seems to only be posted after a finishing pass and buffing metal polish ! (-; Very nice solution, i recently ordered parts from crosman and was shocked how cheap they were compared to the common websites. Does the shround body have the end cap permanently affixed??Hows the noise reduction?get read for orders to flood in buddy!!!!!!!!

The end cap is a separate piece, there is an o-ring near the threaded end and the shoulder is at the opposite end of the threads. It just slides into the shroud and screws onto the barrel adapter....

LOL. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!!) I'm pretty booked up. I will post my print for anyone with a machinist buddy (seriously, if you don't have a machinist buddy, make one, they are the best kind of buddy to have!  8) )

I think this covers the dimensions (truth be told I'm a toolmaker by trade, but about 10 years ago I started designing plastic injection molds instead of building them so I have access/ability to very expensive software even for my government projects).

The gun looks spiffy, you did it yourself, and you saved enough cash to buy more cushions.  Very attractive floral pattern btw.

What is the length of the tube and the O.D. of the tube?

About 14+5/8",  OD is 1" almost on the nose.

Even though you included the parts machining diagrams in one of the above posts, I am not much of a machinist. Are you going to start selling these adapters?

No, unfortunately more projects than time. The threaded adapter could be bought on a large online auction site, and I think you could use the stock plastic rear tube support off the trail np2, or make it work with minor mods. I think it's like $1.48 for that part, so you wouldn't be out much if it didn't work with that part.

JUST TYPE ""1/2 to 15mm webley""  into ebay , its aluminum polished adapter cant miss it// thats the threaded adapter that will fit the qb barrel perfectly
like this ?? its c bore size is 15mm , dead on the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and heres the rear plus that will need a set screw etc

Yep, I think you got it rob. That first link won't open for me, but I'm pretty certain the other pieces would work on the rear.

The link wont work , just type
""1/2 to 15mm webley"" into ebay,. its the aluminum adapter polished, and will fit perfectly 15mm to 1/2-20

Rob, that is a good looking piece, I'd almost hate to cover it with the shroud! LOL.

This is the stock rear support off my NP2, I think you could clean the O-Ring with alcohol, and then use the alcohol to lube the oring and slide it into the shroud and once it dried it would almost "glue" itself to the shroud. Not super flashy, but SUPER cheap and could easily be modified by hacksaw/hand tools if it was too long (I think it would JUST clear my bulk fill elbow). This happens to have a 15mm-ish hole in it (I think it's slightly under that, like .001-.002 so it's a snug fit on the QB Barrel).

Part # is NP214-009

Very cool gun for sure, I've pondered many times on building a custom QB but still messing with my 22xx's. I'm a firm believer in getting what I need from Crosman if it fits the bill and for sure it did with your shroud.  My Prod is relatively back yard friendly but still doesn't hold a candle to my TKO.

Wayne, I'm in exactly the opposite boat, I want to build a twin sister .22 to my .177 and then start on the 22xx platform... for the tinkerer I don't think you could find 2 better airgun foundations, they're both erector sets for the airgun world.

when I went to the last airgun show here in Kalamazoo I almost did buy a Crosman 160 which is basically what a QB is but I didn't because I need another project like I need a hole in my head, but then again you probably know how that goes :)

i have a lathe and dont have a qb , i was just looking for other people that wanna do this modd. it looks like they could make the crosman parts work a 15 mm drill bit and a vice.

Rob,

I'm picking up what you're throwing down (per our PM conversation about making these parts awhile back), was thinking along the same lines with modifying the stock rear support and the threaded adapter you linked to would make this accessible for pretty much anyone.

For everyone else, one thing to note, the ID of the shroud is ~.890" which is ~22.6mm, the .785" (20mm) dimension I listed was the ID of the O-ring groove.

Well I had to jump on this mod after reading the thread. It's an elegant solution for a semi full shroud.

I started with a qb79 on a co2 9oz tank, and a umarex moderator taped up (15mm barrell)

I goofed of for few hours the last 2 days at work and turned the parts, threaded the adapter on my lathe with a supported die against he tailstock. It want together slick as can be. the only changes I made were to put the rear support set screw outside the tube, and  chamfered the right angle where the baffles meet the adapter about 60 degrees,so the smallest edge of the chamfer ended at about 15mm instead of 3/4" . This i thought would unblock the semicircular slots on the threaded end of the baffle and allow pressure to flow back toward the breech, inside the tube .

No difference in accuracy when I tested it out this evening.

I can say th it is every bit as effective as the umarex unit, and maybe more so. There is a difference in sound, hard to explain it. But it looks so much better than that larger "pickle" sitting out there.

Anyone wondering about tank clearance. I have some old brass eagle all steel tanks and newer aluminum standard paintball tanks, and both fit fine, w/ clearance. the newer aluminum ones are larger diameter than the steel ones.

Going to do the same thing to my 79 on hpa next.

thanks Kevin for posting this great mod, It works as well as you said it would

I could post a pic, but it looks the same as Kevin's, just has a bottle on it

I meant the tube from crosman, I called that the shroud. The umarex reference is this:   https://www.pyramydair.com/product/umarex-compensator-fits-hammerli-850-walther-1250-dominator-beretta?a=1135 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/umarex-compensator-fits-hammerli-850-walther-1250-dominator-beretta?a=1135)

Much bigger diamter
