The PCP bug has bit me. It's terrible.
A couple weeks back I purchased a P-Rod. Installed a de-pinger and TKO. Haven't messed with tuning at all. I've been satisfied with it's performance "out of the box" so far. It's not as quiet as any of my 13xx's, but she's close. Unfortunately it's turning out that the p-rod is really picky with pellets. All of m other Crosman have done pretty well with just about everything I've put down the barrel. P-Rod only likes Heavy Exacts and some H&N Crow Magnum. H&N FTT 14gr do OK, but I prefer the trajectory of the 18gr stuff.
I use the P-Rod for backyard hunting and indoor shooting. It's done well on both of those fronts. Rotary feed is neat. I don't need it, but it's cool to have.
Now I find myself with a Talon SS in the "cart" at PA. The additional 10-20FPE it offers and simpler barrel swap is really appealing.
I know this has been answered before, I've read a few threads but they're all a couple years old. Maybe things have changed? How does the Talon SS compare to the p-rod with TKO sound-wise? The high dovetail is counter-intuitive, I've always been told keep the scope close to the bore. Is the Talon really *that* accurate that it can overcome such a height?
Basically I'm looking for someone to say "No Nick, don't buy a Talon SS. Your P-Rod works just fine. You don't need the extra power or .25 barrel to shoot squirrels and possums at 25 yards".
-
Can't help with your specific question but I'm in the same boat. Got myself a Prod and love it with Rocker1's LDC but wanted a .25 from the start. Been eyeballin' the Marauder and other .25s and went with the Armada in .25.
I'm fairly certain you'll ....WE'LL both end up with more than two over the years as most here do. Good luck to us.
-
You might try and asking the same question on TAG forum (talon airgun). Good luck Joe
-
I'm in the same situation. I really like the idea of the Talon SS but have a new prod sitting here in front of me as well.
I say go ahead and do it 8) 8) 8)

Can be pretty sure the TAG forum would be all for the TalonSS (although likely to promote the CondorSS..those guys tend to like power)
Own both. TalonSS has been disassembled and sitting in the parts locker until I figure out what I'm going to do with it. Try as I might, just never really found a role for that one. Been cranked up, cranked down, run on HPA, and run on Co2....just never did find a spot where it fit in for me.
About to try it again, after more than a year of being parts...guess it took me that long to un-remember the things about it I didn't like.
Spend a good bit of effort and $ on the P-Rod as well. One of the early ones, which tended to some barrel problems, so spent the $ to rebarrel it and quiet it further. Makes a nice little moderate power carbine, which has found uses for me...so it's still together and ready to go.

If you are going to go that route... IMHO Talon SS in whatever caliber you like, WOK guard and drop adapter. It's what you crave ! With the quick change top-hat and another hammer spring, you can go from 14-ish fpe all the way up to 45-55 easy. Well beyond that with some more mods. It's an awesome platform to grow with. You will learn a lot and love shooting it. That's been my experience anyway. I hope you take a chance on the AF guns !

I say if you have the extra cash laying around............you can never have too many guns!

I'm with AllAmerican Mike on this one. My Prod LOVEs predator polymags. Good Luck

Are a lot of AF fans, so likely this will step on lots of toes.
Sorry...owe my honest opinion, not a single thing more or less.
There is a safety mod.
A trigger mod.
A scope mount mod.
A frame stiffening mod.
Stock changes (often adding some support to the tank).
Striker mods.
top hat/valve mods.
It's likely not that AF is oblivious to these things, they have tried in small ways to rectify some of the issues....but it's still the same basic system.
Pretty much the easiest way to turn a $600 PCP into a $1000-$1200 PCP.
What attracts airgunners is:
1. AF has some very vocal supporters (As I'm VERY likely to hear from shortly).
2. Is US made.
3. HAs a very high potential for power.
4. Looks "black-gunnish".
5. Price for the basic/un-modded version is "reasonable".
Yeah...just my opinion. BUT an opion from a guy who bought one, used it for 4-5 years, tried 3 different barrels (in 3 different calibers), tried 3 power sourses (PCP, HPA, Co2), tried to get it to behave and find a place in the stable, and failed.

OK, i will be the 1st: No Nicholas, don't buy a Talon SS
INSTEAD, get a TalonP.....lol! My 2 choices for my son where the Prod and the TalonP. I choose the TalonP because of the power and Its adjustability in length as he gets older. I LOVE THIS LIL GUN (it now where a moderator....shhhhhh)

It's small, balanced and a .25...

For me, the Prod has been the 1377/2240 of the pcp world. Many ways to mod and change it. While I never had an AF gun, they certainly have a large following of aftermarket parts, too. Pick one and have fun. :)
My current favorite with wrap around hand guard.

I have a AF Talon, which I enjoy shooting. The only drawback is the high mounted scope from the bore. My main shooting consists of indoor silhouette shooting. The targets range in distance from 9-20 yards. It took so much shimming to get to 9 yards, I went to adjustable rings and CO2. The scope used up a full turn to get to the targets, that brought some confusion to my aging brain.
I finally decided the Talon is a longer range shooter.

Lot's of great replies here and I appreciate all of the feedback. After a solid 24 hours of debate, I've decided to hold off. The Talon sounds like a great platform to build on and I'll absolutely be buying one in the future. Perhaps after Christmas. For now, the P-Rod will do. I've got a 12lb hammer spring I'm going to install. Figure I can tweak this a bit, squeeze another 10FPE out. That will satisfy the urge for now.
From everything I'm reading here and TAG the talon is natively louder and better suited for a longer range than I typically shoot at. All of my shooting is under 50 yards. That's one of the reasons I skipped the bug buster and went with a fixed 35 yard parallax too. Buy equipment for your environment, not ego hehehe
I'll continue sending lots of Gods furry rodent's back to His warm embrace with my existing hardware. Perhaps I wait until next season to jump up to 25 or 30. For now I'll stick with what I've got. Plus it's one less gun my wife can beat me to death with if she were to have found it

Most Prod's really like the H&N FTT in 5.53. Mine would shoot Wally-world CP's ok and .51-.52 H&N's a lil better but the 5.53's shrunk group size quite a bit.
-
Sorry Nick,
I'm going to jump in with another vote for the "P"......It's just one of the most satisfying shooting experiences around (in the sea of many).....pure power!

FTT's do pretty OK in the p-rod. The price is right for them too. Personally prefer the trajectory of Diablo Heavy 18gr. I find myself picking them up with the Buy 3 Get 1 at PA every couple weeks whether I need them or not. Like I said, most of my shooting is <35 yards. At that distance the p-rod can put just about anything within a dime. Except pellets from Amazon. God love em, Prime is amazing but they can't ship a tin of pellets to save their life

After further consideration, several drinks, more pondering, a couple more drinks followed by several hours combing through forums, then a couple more drinks, I've decided to order the Talon SS in addition to the p-rod. Is it the most sound financial decision I've made, no. But neither was investing in an XFL Football themed-Dentistry chain.
Irregardless, the Talon is on it's way. It's been slightly delayed because I accidentally ordered the 177 instead of 22. The good folks at PA fixed it right up for me.
In addition to the drunk web forums surfing, I also messed up the p-rod. Decided to try my hand at tuning a PCP. There's a first time for everything. In many cases, also a last time. Got it dialed in and shooting consistent strings in the upper 500's. Wasn't quite enough. Ordered some springs on a recommendation from the marauder forums. They've been sitting around here a couple weeks and I didn't examine them too closely until today. They were slightly shorter than the stock hammer spring. Didn't think too much about it. Reassembled, accidentally discharged it because my HS was all the way in, soiled myself ever so slightly. After I changed my drawers, put it all together and fired it. The pellet flopped out of the end of the barrel like pre-viagra Bob Dole. Spent a couple more hours and said "I quit". It's currently boxed up and on it's way to MAC1 for a real tune. In the meantime, the Talon should be here Tuesday afternoon. Starting to feel a slight itch in my throat and a headache coming on. May have to use sick time and get some bed-rest Tuesday. Just kidding, I'm calling off and camping out for the FedEx man. Being in a 1-day truck window via FedEx from PA makes all shipping "next day", I've gotten quite spoiled

It's a little late, but learn from your mistakes.
Before you start adjusting stuff, record the factory settings on the prod, so you have a base line to return to when stuff gets out of adjustment.
Now, glad you bought both.
I have owned a 1720, but not a prod, and have owned 2 marauders in .177&.22.
And a whole laundry list of other guns.
But I have narrowed it down to a few that I really like, and are utterly accurate.
The 1720 just wasn't for me.
My gen 2 .177 marauder I use for general plinking and small game hunting where I only need 18-20fpe and a repeater.
A .22 Talon with a Maddog stock, and r&l add ons to bump it up to 40fpe on the lower settings. (I bought the gun used from a member here for $430 and have done nothing to it other than polish the bore with JB bore paste.)
It's a 1/2 inch gun at 50 yards all day.
But put it on co2 and it becomes a 10-12fpe gun with loads of shots per fill.
I had always looked at the Air Force guns since they were introduced, but never bought one, until a little over a year ago.
I wish I had made the jump sooner.
The airforce line of guns are actually listed as a "utility" air gun.
I can see that, in its stock form.
it's accurate enough to do the job.
It's powerful to do the job.
Is it a match gun?
No, but at the price point, it isn't supposed to be, it's a working gun.
It's simple, reliable, and accurate..
It's a glock of the airgun world.
Just my opinion.
And for precision work, at less than 7fpe I picked up a used airforce edge.
With the right pellets, empty .22 rimfire shells don't stand a chance at 25 yards...
