Title: African Air Ordnance Tuning Kits - Reviews and Reports Please
Post by: steveoh on September 16, 2016, 02:23:05 PM
I ordered and received an African Air Ordnance Tuning Kit for my Sam Yang 909s (single tube).

I have not yet started to install it, and am taking my time so as to do an excellent job.

On reading the instructions I noticed that they say you can install the kit with or without the machining. Without machining you will get additional power, but not as much as you would with machining.

I know folks have purchased these kits, but the reports back are few and far between, especially with real world numbers. Seems to me that it would be mighty beneficial for folks contemplating these tune kits to understand better what they are getting into, and what the performance changes are.

AAO offers kits for the Sam Yang:

1. Recluse  .357
2. 909 (double tube) .45
3. 909s (single tube) .45
4. Dragon Claw .50

If you bought and installed one of these kits Report Back!

I will be doing a complete write up of this gun's performance, stock and modded, complete with images, and maybe even video.

I have read of folks having issues with cocking their guns, and apparently AAO now includes two handles, one a bit larger than the original.

I'm purchasing a dragon claw and the African Air Ordnance kit. My only concern is the installation as I do not have a spanner wrench.  Not too many write ups out there either.

There's a feller here who sells spanner wrenches.

Zack Allen is his name... a great guy. i had to take apart 5 Career 707's and without his spanner wrench I would not nave been able to do it without me ruining my rifles ... This is a MUST have item IMHO !

Little bit too much spring for a bellcurve. But pretty descent velocity.

Some useful numbers pulled from here, and Saddle Mountain.

With 141 grain lead round ball ammo.

Factory  FPS       800 791 778 762
- Avg 782.75- 3000 psi

Stock with 141 grain round ball: 191.88 FPE

Saddle Mountain 909s Tune
Power Tuned FPS      896 919 891 850
- Avg 889 - 3000 psi

Tune With 141 grain round ball: 247.5 FPE

///////

African Air Ordnance

  896 879 858 828 794
 - AVG: 851 - 3625.94 psi

Tune with 141 grain round ball: 226.8 FPE

Interesting to me, that it took 3625.94 psi to get the AAO numbers which are still a hair less than Saddle Mountain (Will Piatt)

I'd like to hear from African Air Ordnance and get feed back on these numbers.

And nope I've not gotten the chance to do my Tune on my 909s yet. Broke my foot, and it's making it rather painful to stand on my feet for very long... that and life has a way of keeping me from everything I want to do.

UPDATE: I fixed the numbers for AAO -

I think you listed the numbers  out of order
  shot one was 896 shot 2 was 879 shot 3 858 shot 4 828 shot 5 794 .

We were asked to make an upgrade kit for these rifles  all we had to work with was an original valve  so that said Im happy with the numbers  and im happy that there are 5 kill shots instead of 4 .
This valve is designed that you know your first shot is always your most powerful
On Saddle mountains you will see that between shot 1 and 2 there is a 28 fps difference  ,on ours  between shot 1 and 2 there is   17 fps difference , then from shot 2 and 3 Saddle Mountain had a  28 fps  difference  on ours 21 fps difference  Then on shot 3 to 4 Saddle Mountain there was a difference of 41 fps   and our 3 to 4 there was a 30 fps difference   There was no shot 5 from Saddle Mountain numbers  but our 5th shot was 34 fps difference
I happy with the fact we have a flat shot string  .
I look forward to getting the numbers in on different bullet weights   to see what the max foot pounds it can produce
I,m sure with some tweaking there is room for improvements  .
These kits came about so that  folks would be able to work on there own guns and improve the factory performance

DEFINITELY WORTH THE THE PURCHASE...

I had to buy two of them for my Recluse double barrel... and they are very handy, but not absolutely necessary, though I'd buy the spanner just because...

I purchased this Kit from Jeremy and found that you need to take your time to drill things out... KNOW how to take your gun apart and the double sets of screws you have to get through in a couple of areas... like the breech and such... but the kit definitely increases your power. My results were posted on

hmmmm

Ok.. got to the shooting bench yesterday afternoon for about an hour. Didn't get all I wanted but got some needed shooting out of the way.

I shot the 106 grain powder coated bullets first. I have some pictures of some recovered bullets that I'll post a little later. It was cloudy today and I was worried that the Chrony wouldn't pick up and lo and behold the first shot out of the Gun was an Err.

Here is how the first string went.
1   err
2   885
3   854
4   841.6
5   827.5
6   902.6 (topped off to make up for the lost first shot)
7
8   862.14     5 shot average FPS
9   5 Recorded SHOT AVG = 174.85 FPE

The Second String was with my 129 Slugs.

I didn't Experiment with this too much possibly tomorrow... but several times before I've topped off, took a high power shot and then took a low power shot and got higher numbers. I'm not sure it that is telling me that my efficiency is going up at reduced power or what.. but I'm going to try to go through a low  power string tomorrow to see what that is all about. In the mean time,

129   GRAIN BULLET
1. 843.3   HI =203.6 FPE
2. 867.4   LO = 215 FPE
3. 793
4. 788
5. 755   LO

The Five shot String gave me 809.34  FPS AVG for   187 AVG FPE

On to the round balls that size at .360. These are just sweet... These started off at reduced power from max, so the potential is a little bit more, which I'll attempt tomorrow to catalog. I'm also running out of air...  :(

   70 GRAIN
1   1004   156.64 FPE
2   954        LO
3   954.5    HI
4   946        HI
5   927        HI
6
7   957.1    FPS AVG = 142 FPE

Lastly, I just ran it out to 100 Bar... and this is the string

   106
1   901
2   843.5   LO
3   883.6
4   865.9   LO
5   860.3
6   832.7
7   802
8   793
9   762.6
10   736.6
11   711.5

   881.3333333   180 FPE AVG HI
817.5181818   155 FPE avg all shots
   785.5285714   143 FPE AVG for shots 5 thru 11

So there is my afternoon experience with these just shooting without any particular order to it. I'm becoming quite fond of this gun, but need to get to my Marauder Next. Can't wait to get this out hunting...

Much Aloha,

Tom
