Title: Benjamin Destroyer .22 pellet results, mildly graphic
Post by: TF89 on September 11, 2016, 05:26:50 PM
I bought these pellets and the next day discovered I had a rat issue in our detached garage/carport/garden shed. I have a .22 Disco, fairly stock, cobbled a night vision system together that works very well.

I had tested the pellets the day before and found they shoot very close to the crosman 14.3 HP pellets.  My setup shoots the CHP around 800fsp and I'm thinking these are close to the same.  I tested by shooting into some apples at 30 yards.  One of the pellets made it through both apples and hit a cardboard target and bounced off, the other made it through one apple and came to rest about 3/4 in the one behind it.  These pellets are maybe not quite as accurate as the CHP ( which are very accurate), haven't had a chance to really test that yet.

The pellet in the middle is what they look like before being shot and the two on the sides are ones recovered from the apples.

So anyway.  The first rat I shot was very destructive and if it had not been for this pellet, might have only wounded as the rat moved as I took the shot.  Everything below the eye was mangled.  This rat stopped moving and was dead in about 3-5 seconds, so the shock must have been imense.

This next shot went through the eye and I decided that I would try to find this pellet, not sure I will do that again.  Anyway I was not able to find the pellet and I looked hard for it, however I did find that the brain/skull were just jumbled.  Complete destruction, even though I could not see that from looking at the rat, it was just missing an eye.

I ended up shooting 5 rats, one did manage to run away (weird as that was great shot placement or so I think).  The head shots resulted in very little nerve activity, normally they dance some, however this time, 2-3 flops and it was over.

I should mention this one.  I decided to try a heart/lung shot in a quartering shot, it entered just in front of the shoulder and it exited behind the shoulder about an inch on the back side.  Again, it flopped one time as was done.

That rat is the bottom one in the picture.  Again the entry wound and exit wound were not out of normal and looked just like what I would see with the CHP. Having said that i will also say that these Destroyer pellets make lights out a lot faster.

Those are my results and I should mention that I was positioned about 17 yards from where the rats were hanging out.

Very good, my friend. I was thinking of using destroyers on my next squirrel rampage. Now I'm sure of it.

I sure wish those worked in my Disco...
I picked up some in .177 cal and my RWS 34 loves them.  Grabbed some in .22 in a vain effort to find an accurate pellet in my 392, but they weren't it.  Recently tried them in the Disco.  First two shots were nearly the same hole, sand bagged at 15 yards.  Third pellet was 4" off at about 2 o'clock.  Fourth was an inch low at 7 o'clock.
Grabbed the trusty JSB's and shot three rounds in to a ragged hole, which is typical for this gun.

I know the .177's out of the RWS are very effective on GS's.  I can only imagine what the .22's would do!

Ron.

Nice shooting.  Thanks for reporting on these, might be a good off the shelf alternative to wadcutters for close range thumping.  Always looking for effective ammo, right off the shelf.

Thanks for the kind words.  Actually for around here these were young and on the smallish side 6-7 inches (body).  A couple of months back I was helping a couple who let them grow up (getting fat on chicken and rabbit food) and those were around 9-10 inches (maybe bigger as I didn't measure) and very fat.  Rats around here tend to be very healthy with a nice fat layer and sleek fur.

They still give me the heebie jeebies.  A couple of years ago I was moving a pile of firewood in the dark and was down to the last few pieces when I grabbed a nice fat rat who had made that pile his home.  I'm not sure who squealed louder or ran faster, me or the rat.

They're just "spooning".   :D

Great shooting.  I like the night-vision "cobbling".

I haven't had any luck with Destroyers in either caliber for my 1377 or my 392.  My 760 bone-stock plastic-fantastic shoots them good enough for what it is.

Ya might wanna try some Gamo Red-Fires for giggles in your guns.  My Benji absolutely loves them- more than regular CP Domes and CPHP.  and like the Destroyers, they Do Their Job.

I tried them in .177 in my NPSS and that gun didn't like them, of course I can also say that same gun didn't like the .177 destroyers either.  In truth the NPSS likes JSP 8.4 really well and a few others just okay, mileage varies for sure.

I like the Destroyers because Walmart is selling 250 count tins for $4.82 and that is a price I'm liking.  I'm doing what I do best sometimes, just rambling out loud it.

Thanks for the suggestion, it always good to know what is working for others.   If I get the chance I will see how they do in the disco, nice to have options or something new to try out.  Same old same old gets old.  ;)

Nice shooting. Healthy looking rats.

I purchased the Benjamin Hunting Pellet Sampler pack, and these were included. I liked them a lot, and my Trail NP2 thought they were pretty good as long as you weren't going over 20 yards. Things opened up quite a bit after that.

I recall hitting a nutter from below who was about 30 feet up my Japanese maple with one of these. It punched hard and left a good sized exit wound. Never knew what hit em'.

Good luck with your ratting and I hope you continue to get clean, humane kills with the Destroyers.
