Title: Taipan Mutant Standard .22 - Another First High-End AG Review
Post by: dippingriz on August 15, 2016, 10:07:12 PM
Topic: Taipan Mutant .22 Review

Overview of need (want :) ):
Unfortunately, the job market for software is much better suited for the city life. The best choice for urban backyard fun is not my .25 Marauder @ 45 FPE with a touch of bark.  As I will be moving back into the city, I decided I “needed” a smaller, pistol-ish,.22.  PCP is the only way I roll now so the choices were limited to the FX Ranchero (overpriced), the WARP (too expensive, but looks amazing), the P-Rod (meh..already have a Marauder), the Hatsan...thing, and the Evanix other..thing.  I’ve already built and sold a Hi-Pac’d 2250kt that I don’t want to do again.
After accepting defeat in the pistol world, I moved to compact carbines and bullpups.  The FX Wildcat was a strong contender as well as the Cricket .22.  However, the total cost was moving on $1400-$1600.  The Brocock compatto just didn’t do it for me, nor did I want to purchase from the vendor.  After pouring over reviews I found the .22 Taipan Mutant Standard to be the perfect fit in regards to size and power considerations.  I am also tired of constantly tinkering with my Marauder so being regulated + CZ barrel will be a nice break.  I caught the sale from Talon Tunes @ ~$1200 and pulled the trigger.

Goal:
880 – 900 FPS for 4x magazines (48 shots)

Equipment:
Taipan Mutant Standard .22
Hawke 4.5-14 TAC Sidewinder
Vortex Bubble level
UTG High QD rings (these may be too high to be honest)
* Ordered UTG Med QD rings to try
JSB 18.13 and Some JSB Monsters for hunting
Uncle Mike’s QD Sling Rings
Butler Creek Leather Sling

Endstate:
- Switch to lefty (DONE)
- Add Sling
- Maybe add Bi-Pod
- Maybe a refinish on the stock
- Maybe a little reshaping of the stock to knock off some of the harsh geometry

I’ll try to get some groups up tomorrow if I have a few minutes to spare.

Thanks all

Your Goal is not an issue, the Mutant is Right at the Top of the efficiency Pyramid !!!   Your gonna Love it

I did this with my standard ...

61 shots 881-890 Jsb 18.1 grain. with a 220 bar fill. Manufacture calls for a 250 bar fill but my tank was running low

The Tube is only 200 cc

I just ordered Tony's next-to-the-last Mutant last night. I'm excited!

dman; thank you for showing the numbers.  I noticed your name from the 10 pages I read on Talon Tunes as well.  Great resource to visit for the mutant.

wimpanzee: You will not be disappointed! I talked with Tony before ordering and typically he will look the gun over completely, test fire, and record a shot string before sending.  Worth the extra few days for shipping to be honest.

EDIT: Put some groups on paper @ 55 yards and it is looking very promising.  I don't want to post groups until I try the medium height scope rings as the high rings are uncomfortable to shoot right now.   On a side note; I downed 7 HOSP's back-to-back ranging from 30 yards to 80 yards in a little 5-6 MPH wind.  Hard not to giggle when an 18 grain pellet smacks a little bird at ~ 900 FPS.

I really REALLY like that gun.  Whats the weight on one fully dressed out like that?

dippingriz,

Thanks for the review!  Those mutants are getting more an more of my attention.  I think a turned down (perhaps 820 FPS with JSB exacts) standard would go a long ways to meeting my goals of a near silent backyard pesting rig for 30-40 yards.

I'v also read about the long version but haven't seen much written about it.

Joe
