I ordered a new scope from Optics Planet. I opted for their free shipping. (I know - Optics Gate but this is general.)
I tracked the shipment on the Fedex site. Delivery was slated for yesterday, August 10 by close of business. I stayed home all day.
I waited patiently and at 3:39 pm they notified me my shipment would be delivered Friday, August 12. They didn't say tomorrow, they said FRIDAY!!
I can wait, it's only a scope and I do have other things to do, but FRIDAY??
Actually it's not that bad. My rings haven't arrived yet either. I just felt like venting and thought I'd share my experience.
-
Am in a similar situation. Bought an airgun. Seller used FedExcrement. Tracking states, "Scheduled delivery: Fri 8/12/2016 by end of day".
Recent history with FedEx is pretty good compared to 15 or so years ago though. The minivan usually arrives with pellet orders from PA, right at noon.
-
Just the opposite with me guys . Ordered a rifle from Pyramyd Air . They said be here by Friday , that would have been four days . It came yesterday . It may have something to do with how far you are from point of shipment .----------------Good Shooting to all-----John

The last item that FedEx carried for me went NORTH from Kentucky into Indiana, SOUTHWEST into Texas, EAST into Mississippi, NORTH (again) and was then handed off to USPS for final delivery. FedEx carried it around the country for six days before handing it off. On the trip to the EAST from Texas, my item pass through my state and continued on into Mississippi. Great job, FedEx!

Fedex has been doing that lately. I have been getting the final delivery from USPS or other carrier after FedEx hands it off. UPS is doing this now too. Those 2 always copy each other or adapt the same policies. This handing-off extends the delivery date by 2-3 days or more. I know it most likely costs the vendor shipping the goods less $ to select this service, but to give you an example my Fedex facility is 4-5 miles away. My box sat at the Fedex facility for 24 hours and was then handed off to USPS. I checked the Fedex web site and the initial delivery date had been changed by a couple of days. USPS delivered it 2 days later. I could have made the 8 min. drive to the Fedex facility and got my stuff 3 days sooner. UPS did the same exact thing and the UPS facility is even closer to me than Fedex.
This system makes no sense to me at all, and as far as I can see does not serve the customers in any way except to substantially delay the delivery and increase frustration. In other words they reduced the level the service.

I have a rather healthy dislike for FailEx as I prefer to call them. On at least 4 occasions, they have said buisness closed or person not home. That is on packages that don't require a signature, and delivery instructions are on my FailEx profile. The worse part is that they never even came to my house! I have cameras, and would know if they did. Two of the times I was home and in the yard, when they said no one was home >:( I live in town, and my house isn't hard to find, but apparently the driver that delivers here is really lazy or FailEx is just really crappy. I have zero love for them. I literally have a 50% chance that they will not deliver my packages when they say they will! I never have problems with UPS here though...
-
FedEx can be great , or BAD at times . I have had 2 day delivery & also 3 week delivery !!
-
The rest of the story? Yep, it turns out the package went to a handling facility on the other side of the state and from there to my local post office from where it will actually be delivered.
I mistakenly thought FedEx would be delivering. Silly me. I guess I'm just lucky they haven't outsourced to China or India.

Once upon a time our dental lab sent some ones crowns via UPS from Detroit to a small town about an hour away. After not being delivered a couple of days later we tracked the package to Florida. When my father asked the UPS rep on the phone how it ended up in Florida the woman replied" That was the route the driver decided to take". It took more than a week to finally be delivered to our account. Needless to say neither he nor we were pleased.
-
Final Update - the mail carrier delivered the scope to my house today. Thank you to USPS!! The outer box had a big dent but the inner box appeared to be unaffected due to about two inches of air bag packing all around - courtesy Optics Planet.
As a postscript - six months ago I ordered a cell phone. FedEx ALMOST delivered it. They hung it in a bag (in the rain) attached to my mailbox, which is a quarter mile from the house. I was out of town. A neighbor called about the package hanging there. She had retrieved it and taken it home. She just called to let me know where I could find it.
I'm sure glad I have thoughtful neighbors!!
FedEx appears to be a good shipper to avoid if possible.

Airgun arrived at noon today in good shape. Shipped Wed. from Georgia.

Looks good, congrats.

On orders where you must pick the shipping choice, the connect tion to the USPS is about half as picking FedEx or ups.
-
Yup both Fed Ex and UPS use the new thing one calls Sure Post!!
Both of them are hooked up with USPS and the shipping cost to the customer is much less. The downfall is it takes 2 -3 times longer to reach you. So look carefully to see if it actually the carrier you pick that will be delivering it to you!
I've seen where PA uses Fed Ex Sure Post very often and anytime I see that on an order I either look for other shipping choice or cancel the order.
I do not like having to wait a week for a delivery that always had been 2 days from PA

I used sure post or smart post once to see where my items traveled , kind of like the traveling gnome, it was an interesting 5 day trip that normally takes 3 days :)

You know FED-Ex and UPS merged?... Their calling it "Fed-Up"!
After a delay in my scope purchase from the seller, they were kind enough to pay 2nd day air UPS...That was Wednesday.
08/10/2016 Order Processed:
Secaucus, NJ, United States 08/10/2016 10:34 P.M. Departure Scan
08/10/2016 8:13 P.M. Origin Scan
It made it from NJ to Indy in just 18 hours from pick-up to when it received it's arrival scan Thursday afternoon.
Indianapolis, IN, United States 08/11/2016 2:29 P.M. Arrival Scan
There the trail stopped cold! Was "On schedule for delivery Friday by the end of the day" all this time but no departure scan from Indy (?)

UPS ain't much better than Fed-Ex anymore in my eyes.

FedEx home delivery can leave much to be desired. I've found that FedEx commercial is cheaper and faster. My gear gets delivered to my office now. Shipping is quicker and my wife can't intercept!
Win-Win
-
It makes me wonder when orders take 1-2 days to traverse the country, and then take another week to cover 30 miles from the distribution center to my house.

A long time ago in a land far far away, (when I was thin and had hair) Fed Ex sent EVERYTHING to one hub , (where ever they are based, Tenn. perhaps), you could send it overnight to the gent next door, guaranteed next day, it went to the HUB. Everybody made fun of the USPS. But in a whole year FED EX did maybe 2 days of what the USPS does.
Fed Exes, residential customers are guaranteed next day by afternoon of the day, businesses are guaranteed BEFORE 10 am. Obviously businesses have no one there, but people can take the day off if they want it the minute it gets there. I chased a driver made him back up to deliver then aked why he left the "we called you were out" sticker he said he knocked I pointed to the door bell, he gave a lame excuse and gave me the boxes. My UPS guy hides the boxes under the door mat or under a porch chair, and he rings my bell if it is a non sign package, (they drop and run).
So when you order something add "Inc." or "and Company" to your name, and perhaps you will get the preferred treatment.
worth a try, I think
-
Businesses definitely get preferred treatment than residential by both UPS and FedEx.
UPS around here is much better than FedEx as well. The UPS driver always rings the bell and then walks back to his truck, because I rarely get a package that I need to sign for. He even waves when I open the door. FedEx almost NEVER rings the bell unless they need a signature. More than half the time I do not know the package has been outside the door all day, unless I check the Tracking on their web site. This FedEx driver pretends he is a Ninja and it's like he doesn't want me to know he dropped anything off. I watched him walk up to my door one day from my living room window, leave the box by the front door without ever making a sound, and looked like he tippy toe'd when he walked away. I don't know what his problem is. The UPS guy revs the engine, bangs his truck's door loudly, and I know he is here before he even rings the bell. With Fedex it's like the guy is on a covert operation. He must be afraid of coming in contact with people or anyone seeing him.

UPS ain't much better than Fed-Ex anymore in my eyes.
UPS Tracking updated to delivery today (Monday) by the end of the day... but still only had last status as the arrival scam (no typo) at 2:30pm last Thursday.
No show AGAIN! Checked UPS for my course of action.
"After 24 hours of no scans item is considered lost.... contact seller who should file a claim."
Seller says they will handle it but wants to contact UPS first.... DANG! :-[
-
And I thought I had a complaint. Good luck, Scott!!
-
My UPS delivery guy is definitely the best around. He always rings the door bell and waits for me and the most important thing my dog so he can say hello and give my dog his doggy bone! He has also told all other UPS drivers that fill in for him to make sure to do the same.
He also ask how things are going and chats for a minute or two then gives my dog another bone before heading back to his truck.

I kinda figured USPS and Fedex were in cahoots because I've had a few items that originally specified Fedex as the shipper and after doing tracking it said they'd be coming USPS but they were always on the day that the tracker said they were going to be.
-
I've had pretty good luck with all three; especially, USPS Priority Mail. What does get my goat, and me on edge, is the late delivery by UPS. The Tracking Log states delivery to be between 12:15-4:15 PM and the package doesn't arrive until sometimes as late as 8:00 PM. Maybe this is a Monday thing?
-
All my UPS deliveries always saw By the End of Day when I check the tracking. It will say by Noon if I select early delivery when ordering.
Most of my UPS deliveries are between 5 PM and 7 PM but have seen them as late as 9 PM.
Maybe I should select hold at local distribution center as it is only 3 miles form my house and the counter opens at noon

Just to be nice I always hand over a bottle of beer as a tip when something gets delivered. Just make somebody's day, plus it seems somehow make my deliveries go a little smoother. Even if nothing is delivered to my house , they all beep the horn when passing.

Well, there is our problem... the drivers are drinking beer on the job...

20 or so years ago a friend of a friend was a UPS driver and used to go out with us once in a while for a beer. He said he always carried dog bones in his pocket in the event he encountered an unfriendly dog while delivering. He said he had been at several houses where dogs were on a very long leash or chain and could cover the entire front of the house and/or garage, and gates going to the back door. He said these dogs became very friendly once he threw a dog bone at them, but said he kept giving them a bone every time in case they forgot one day who he was, or they were PO'd he didn't give them one :)
Nowadays I think they can refuse delivery or hold it at your nearest facility if you have a dog in the way of the door, but they have to leave a note somewhere where you see it, somehow...
OK giving beer to someone who is driving... Yes, that could explain some of the delivery snafu's :) My UPS delivers are always between 5pm and 8pm like some of you guys, and when they are busy or around the Holidays - 9pm. I don't care as long as they deliver on the day they are supposed to.
-
Just figured out I can sign for packages online and avoid the missed delivery hassle :o
-
This week, I received a package that FedEx carried part of the way. They handed it off to USPS and it came to my PO BOX. I try to get all my stuff delivered to the post office for safety. However, USPS doesn't handle the rifles. I make it my business to track the rifles; and I am at home when they are supposed to be delivered. The service here is GOOD to VERY GOOD.
-
I have a wife that works over night as a NICU (Neo Natal ICU) RN so last time I was expecting an AG delivery that required a signature I requested a late delivery 6 to 9 pm So when I got home there was a note on the door from 1pm , ::) checked tracking and it said scheduled for the next day between 8 am and 5PM PS I paid extra for the late delivery. So I called FEDEX and lit a fire under the supervisors keester my package arrived 45 minutes later ;D ;D

"FailEx"
Now that is a better name for them
Last Jan, I ordered from Amazon
Caldwell chrony
The day it was to show up,
I checked there web site and
it showed that it was del. to porch
I go outside and see snow, I have to shovel
all the way to the road to get mail.
I then asked Amazon who hands me off to
FailEx, they ask what color is my house?
I tell them to ask driver.
after a couple hours of fighting amajoke
I get a refund.
I reorder, they hold my order for a week
I finally get it a week later.
It shows a hundred feet less than my know good unit.
I call caldwell, they tell me that they will
ship a new unit WITH a return label for bad unit
a week or so later I get the new one WITHOUT a return label.
Fine I'll just keep and see if they follow up on it.
NOTHING! (many years in the business I know how return labels look and work)
So,
A couple more months go by and I'm outside and see
in a snow drift between our house and the next door house
a big box soaking wet,
I wade thru the snow and get the box
Inside is the first unit sealed and unhurt.
And that is how I got three units for ordering one.
If I was a driver for any place,
I'd take a picture of every package I left anyplace
to cover my backside.
Digital is only a moment to push the buttons.

USPS is really my favorite shipper. Good delivery times for the price and my experience is better reliability than the other two.
Everyone loves to bag on USPS, but considering how much junk and bulk mail they have to handle, they do a pretty good job overall and the price is unbeatable.
-
Up here in northern WI all my Fed Ex packages get pushed off to the post office so all deliveries are always 1 to 2 days behind expected deliveries. I will not do business with certain venders because they use Fed Ex and package deliveries are whenever the post office gets them here, very irritating at best.
-
One plus with USPS who doesnt know you mail carrier on a more personal level than ,,, :o wait I meet the other drivers a lot more oftyen since I got back into air gunning ???
-
I'm not sure weather its coming through FedEx or what, but a family member ( my grandmother 😁) ordered me a Williams 5dsh peep sight for Christmas . It was scheduled for delivery yesterday, which was perfect because she's coming to stay for a few days starting Monday. But now it has been rescheduled for monday, so I just have to hope that I get lucky and it comes through the mail as it would arrive in the morning before she leaves for my house.
If not I'll have to wait till Christmas which means i have to bring my Sheridan and my tool box with me so I can mount it and give ol' blue his first real test shots since he came back from getting resoldered by mac1.
I really hate having to wait for things to arrive in the mail, but for some things it's the only way.
-
I'm a FedEx contractor and a lot of the problems come from the companies shipping. The problems with the failed deliveries that say "business closed or not at home" is just a lazy driver if it's being shipped to a residence and not a signature required delivery. If a package says its scheduled for Monday just for example and then last minute is changed to Thursday, that would probably mean that it got damaged at some point in the shipping process and was sent back to the shipper and they had to re-ship it so the process basically just started over.
-
FedEx is the worst. Plenty of times the tracking updates made me look like a complete fool. We put a man on the moon and yet we can't figure out how to track packages with accuracy. I avoid FedEx whenever possible.
-
FedEx does pretty well here. UPS...frustrating. Order tons of stuff online. Couple months ago I had ordered something that I was tracking like a hawk...not unlike my 2 new guns that I'm watching right now. lol...anyway... My package showed out for delivery on the day it was supposed to be delivered. Waited and waited and waited. We literally live 3 minutes from the local UPS. Finally about 9:30pm I see that it says it was delivered "to the box." Hmmm...Never saw anyone. No package. I call UPS. They confirm it was delivered "to the box" and asks if I have a box. I say I have a mail box. They say that they don't deliver to the mail box. Mail box is a 250' from the house. I walk out there and sure enough my package that is well bigger than the box looks like it's been driven into the mail box with a sledge hammer. Had to cut it to pieces to get it out. Unbelievably, contents were ok. Still waiting on a UPS supervisor to call me to confirm that they don't deliver to mail boxes. ::)

I've had too many friends work at UPS, FedEx, DHL, and of course, as mail carriers. This time of the year is a mad-house. Between ship-off point and arrival-point, there could be weather, accidents, illness, and of course, theft. I had a package from China (computer parts) get "lost" when the plane crashed. Was checking on status and right after shipping started I got an instant refund. News that night had an air-freight plane in China crash on the runway, so...
Everybody involved in delivering the World To Your Door is just one tiny cog in a huge complicated piece of machinery. Those guys and gals are putting in some crazy-long hours, and this time of the year, they have to deal with impatient Everybody, bad weather, crazy traffic/drivers, and of course, the potential for lost merchandise by "seasonal help".
Add in dogs, homes that don't have clear numbering, people forgetting to turn porch lights on, and notes/messages not making it onto deliveries (such as "leave delivery in pick-up cab"), I think it's pretty amazing I still get about 99% success. The latest 1%-er?? Ordered my mother a new computer on Amazon, it was 4 miles from their house when tracking vaporized. End result? Amazon took care of me. I got a refund, ordered a different model (since the 1st was the last in stock), got free rush delivery, and she's sitting pretty with her new computer.
I'm not saying the various parcel delivery services can excuse bad service and employees, but like a lot of things, you can success a thousand times, and one bad experience. IT's the one bad experience you hear about, cuz nobody talks about the stuff that works the way it should.

I was driving a little pickup truck one time and the brakes failed as I was approaching a heavily traveled street. Did I care WHY the brakes didn't work?
USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc. are in the business of delivering stuff. Do I care WHY it doesn't get to me?
Same answer both times.
-
For me, FedEx is usually about 2 days earlier than they say they'll be, which is nice. Cuz the USPS here takes forever.
-
I have to hand it to my fedex lady , she braved a snow storm to deliver my HPA hoses and fittings on time :)

Nobody is asking you to care WHY. Life is what it is. Stuff happens. Should it ruin your day because a package you ordered from the other side of the planet doesn't show up on the right day? No, because accidents happen. It is no different than you carrying in groceries and having a bag break. It is no different than riding a bicycle and getting a flat tire. I also think of it this way: if people want to complain, that's fine. But I haven't seen anybody come up with a better way of doing things, and given the amount of brainpower that goes into logistics transport, I'm pretty sure this is the best way until somebody figures out teleportation.
I'll add that if my brakes failed while driving, I'd really care WHY they failed. So it wouldn't ever happen again.

Deliveries are very "interesting" this time of year. I ordered two 1322's for my sons from Airgun Depot. They're in Salt Lake City, Utah. Normally when I order from them, the package goes from there to Reno, NV, then here to me in Truckee. Normally takes about 2 days.
This time, the order went from Salt Lake City to Ohio, then to Reno, then to the Bay Area, then to Sacramento, then to Truckee, and finally to me after a week. That was USPS.
Not a problem for me, just amusing watching the tracking.
I once ordered a shotgun stock and forend from Boyd's. On the scheduled day, I came home to find literally half a shipping box! The Boyd's box was torn in half and crudely taped shut with clear packing tape. There were black tire tracks, probably from a hand truck, visible on the torn section. The box only contained the forend.
I went through the convoluted nightmare of getting a human on the phone at Fed Ex and tried to explain the issue. As English clearly wasn't a first, or probably even second, language to the person on the phone, it took nearly 15 minutes to make them understand what I had not received. They finally told me to contact Boyd's and have them start a claim process.
The next day I contacted Boyd's, but about 15 minutes later, a Fed Ex truck pulled up out front. The driver, (really nice guy), delivered the other half of the box, which was in similar condition to the first, complete with the other half of the tire tracks.
Fortunately it contained the stock, which was not damaged.
The driver explained that due to the rigorous time constraints that they're under, the loaders are anything but gentle with packages. They just don't have time to be.
This is why I appreciate places like Airgun Depot and Pyramid Air, that really package things well. The way they package pellets, the delivery guy could nearly throw the box from the street to my doorstep and not dent any skirts.

This thread was started August 11, 2016, absolutely nothing to do with the Holiday conditions that has recently come up.
I am Maintenance Manager at a factory. My machine up-time depends on the prompt delivery of parts when I need them.
More times than not Fed-Ex has left me hanging... seriously. Their"Overnight Red" delivery will show up 3 or 4 days later. That service is NOT guaranteed, but paid for and money taken none the less.
Mean while UPS is Johnny on the Spot every day at 10:30.
