First off, horrible packing job...rifle box , stuffed in a big flat box with no packing...opened up rifle box and zero foam...gun just flopping around in there...could tell where rear sights scraped the box....fortunately no damage.......barrel clean as a pin...bit if an effort to cock..after adjusting the rear sight more to the right than I would like....using CHP 177 hollow point (all I got are those and wad cutters) Im satisfied with grouping at 10 meters, will scope it later......this gun is not worth $229 in its present form, but well worth the $78 I paid....only thing gun is loud...louder than my Hatsan 95 in 22...so maybe no backyard plinking....Ive never been real hard to please, just like stuff to work.......for me this one is a keeper..stay tuned...

Philip, one thing I WILL say, not having handled the latest version of the 135X compared to my early version. And that is if the stock has not changed, you are correct that you cannot go wrong at that price!!!
I was able to get my hands on a spare stock due to a design flaw we informed Retay of while in production. Anyway, the stock fit me like no other stock I have shouldered. Honestly, it felt natural and extremely comfortable. I used the damaged stock to modify and adapt to hold a GenI MRod. So for that price, it would be worth it to me to just take the action out and trash it and keep the stock.
:)
But, being the tinkerer I am, I would most likely invest whatever time it too to iron out any issues and make it a shooter too. As long as they did not change the barrels in this latest edition, they WERE lasers!!!
Congrats on a good looking airgun. You decide to sell it, let me know. I'll buy it for the stock.
-
Gee thanks enabler Philip. LOL
That price is really crazy so I tripped over to Amazon and just ordered the woodgrain for $64 plus tax. $72 shipped free.
Will give me a chance to look it over close to compare and to have another GOOD fitting stock, as long as they did not change from the 2011 production.

Go ahead blame me ,we are all in this together........I almost got the wood, but thought the Carbon might be easier to sell (if I chose to sell guns)....if the price remains low, may get one in 22 , just cause I can...good luck

Mine in 22 exact same color is shooting good at 31 yards just had to center my muzzle break it was twisted left. right now 14.66 grain FTT's at 755 fps.
-
Sometimes its good not to expect much..I still like this gun(so does everybody whose seen it).....had to order some tall rings for it....just using a cheap Daisy/Winchester 4x32 AO scope at the moment....only complaints so far, rubber pad on pistol grip came loose and soft screws on pica tinny rail...more later
-
Well not a real bad looking or shooting rifle but the recoil is so harsh broke my new bushnell custom scope after 25 shots returned it and got another one maybe the scope was degective? Cross hairs are still perfect but can not adjust up down or right to left move the knobs and nothing happens matched to my bore sighter. Think I'll try my BSA Sweet 22 and see what happens have one on my Hatsan 105X with now issues. Overall I really like the feel of this rifle but can't complain for 66.95 shipped for the Desert .22 it is going to be hard to keep clean shows every little bit of dirt I guess if this really becomes a major issue I'll hydro dip it camo.
-
Haven't had time to shoot my .177 yet but it looks like the open sights might work a little better than on the 100x under lever I had before. Totally different rear sight.
-
Got my tall rings.....Winchester/daisy 4x32 AO is hanging in there ....consistent center groups at 10 meters.....would like to take outside ,but even though I have a very large privacy fenced back yard on corner lot, neighbors on both sides.....guns got a kick and loud....
-
Shot about 20 pellets using the BSA Sweet 22 so far so good Zeroed after 5 shots groups were nice and tight at 30 yards still holding.
-
Put about 200 shots through the 135X .22 this week end with the BSA Sweet 22 installed had no issue with the scope as I did after only a few shots with the Bushnell Custom loosing the ability to adjust up down right left. Started off a little erratic but once things settled in the rifle shoots very consistent. Trigger still a little long but kinda got used to it. The attached was the last 50 or so when it really settled in range was 30 yards. Not sure what issues others are having but for the 70 bucks I paid this is one of the best ergonomically feeling rifles I own..

I gotta agree , of all the air rifles I have , this one fits me like it was made for me.....if the metal parts ever &^^& out on me...I will figure out some way to keep the stock....LOL....oh and good shooting by the way....

My woodgrain look 135X in .177 just arrived. They have definitely changed. The stock still shoulders well but they have changed from the nice rubberized stock to cheap hollow plastic. That is the first major difference I noticed.
Here is the older original stock.

The front sight has changed. The crazy thing was they had a rear sight but just a cocking assist on the first model. No, that's not a bird apartment sight on the front. LOL

Trigger assembly looks to be the same, will have to open it up and see if it can be improved on.
Very little packing in the box as noted. Had a small piece of Styrofoam at the butt and at the end of the barrel. Thank goodness it was double boxes, the barrel was sticking out of the end of the inner box. But no damage to the fiber optic sight. Looks like they stole that component from the early 100X series.

So far, not impressed and a bit disappointed in how Retay went backwards after soliciting our help in the design. They took what could have been a top notch competitor in the market and made it cheap to compete with the lower end stuff. But at $64, I have no complaints. This tells me why the originals were in the $300-400 range and now in the $200 range or lower.
::)
Will try to clean it up and sling some lead this weekend if not sooner (between other projects). I'm interested in seeing if it is a tack driver like it's predecessor.
-
Dez, if you sort out how to make the new trigger better, tips would be helpful as everything I read about the older ones, they had a nicely adjustable 2 stage and the new ones, well...you've already seen it...
Thanks in advance :)
-
Will do...
-
DEz, did you get the break barrel new or from someone else, who might have put that barrel weight on it.
That's the problem I had with the under lever, the plastic stock seemed like it was made by Mattel toys.

Tim, as with many of my herd, there is a story behind the airgun. This one started back in 2011 and involved several folks. We were able to get a handful of Retay airguns into the states and two were sent to Gene to dissect and do a complete field test of. He and Rocker1 made a deal with the wanna be distributor and bought the 135X Sniper and the 100X in Ferrari Red. They went through it and gassed it and presented it to me as a gift. The whole process of his evaluation and gas ramming it is in the Review Gate.
And the round chunk of metal came on it like that. It's actually a good counter balance.

Mine is turning out good I wouldn't pay no more than what I paid for mine 117.00.

Finely got my .177 Retay 135x out Friday and got some numbers and shot it at the fun shoot in Cross, S.C Saturday
Me and Big Al looked at the trigger and next month at the fun shoot we're going to try and see if a GRT trigger will work in it. Big Al said he heard it would.
Trigger 7lbs 5oz
JSB domed 13.43grs 661fps
JSB domed 10.34 825
RWS Super Mag. w/c 9.3 717 (fit tight)
RWS Misterkugeln w/c 8.2 850
RWS Hobby 7.0 917
Seemed to like the Misterkugeln and JSB Match Diabolo S100 w/c 8.26grs but with the trigger it's hard to be consistent.
Kicks hard and is load. Friday I cocked with one hand and had a sore shoulder Saturday at the fun shoot and used both hands there.
Later, Tim.

Unless they dramatically changed the internals of the trigger group, GRT will not work.
Haven't had a chance to open this one up yet. Still busy with MRod projects. But if a GRT would fit, Gene most definitely would have added one back in 2011.
:)
