I been wanting to get one for a while. Every time I get some airgun monies saved up. A nice vintage rifle would come along and there goes the chrony idea. I couldn't pass this F1 up for 44 bucks shipped. So as y'all know I'm mainly a pumper. Sooo, I'll be getting some extra working out in.
I just want to start putting some numbers down. I have quite a few pumpers so this is gonna take some time. Feel free to add to. This will be mostly pumpers, for now.
-
First up is my 1978 Sheridan Blue Streak. Which is boxed and about to be sent out tomorrow. I have a feeling I'm gonna regret this one. But it is heading up to the last frontier. So I think she will get much more use than I was able to give her. May be an actual everyday tool?

Any and all Dan welcome to post there numbers.

How many pumps for those numbers?
I use my chrony all the time, I love it. Takes away the guessing and lets you see how your guns are performing.
-
Have had a Chrony (4 or 5) since the '80s. First one was $50, I think. When first getting into shooting vintage pumpers ~2005 (had acquired several since ~2000) I decided to Chrony them one day. Clocked and recorded 6 shots each (to get a good average) at 4, 6 and 8 pumps. That's ~108 pumps on each of 9 rifles! After nearly 1000 pumps in one afternoon, my 50 something y/o shoulders exacted their revenge.

That will " Steroid " your shoulders !

Actually, the opposite happened. Both were feeling puny and spent that night but were sore for nearly a week after!

That's on 8 pumps, Terry. Was retaining air on the 8th pump. If I didn't clear that bit of air and just pumped back up to 8. I was getting 626 avg fps. Since its reseal I've only shot it a handful of times since last year. So either needed some good use and more love juice or maybe a simple stretching of spring.

Dang, Terry...You a beast!! My main problem is getting the time to shoot. Living in an community I have to wait for a good time. That's only when I'm pumping to max. Not sure how loud it is outside my shop, but it's loud in there.
Next up will be my 65 Dan. Followed by the Sheridan/Crosman c9
-
Where did you find a F1 up for 44 bucks shipped?
-
I had to play the waiting game, Scott. Off the yellow not store bought. I did see this though:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004Y7CMQK/ref=pd_aw_sbs_200_of_39?ie=UTF8&dpID=41iO7F6EV%2BL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_SL500_SR100%2C100_&psc=1&refRID=SFW29DY56QDHG6RJSHBZ (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004Y7CMQK/ref=pd_aw_sbs_200_of_39?ie=UTF8&dpID=41iO7F6EV%2BL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_SL500_SR100%2C100_&psc=1&refRID=SFW29DY56QDHG6RJSHBZ)
All the specs are the same(30fps-700fps) (within .5% accurate) other than its labeled Archery Chrony. In the description it says can do other projectiles. I searched around on other sites and they seem to be able to do the exact same thing. Just much cheaper and with lights.
-
Your dan should've been getting 650-660, on 8 pumps, with a 14.3gr. pellet.

Am far from 'a beast'. Have just practiced using the two arm technique, which divides the total effort between both arms, since 1980 when I first used it cocking my 2 Diana 6M pistols that were used as sporters for ~25 years. The basics of this technique are fairly well demonstrated at 03:45 to 04:15 in this video I found on youtube. No comment on the rest of the vdo.

Yea I thought it was shooting a little light. This is the rebuild I did with hardware parts. I dug out the ring in the valve stem and added. Same with the check valve I dug that out and inserted a rubber pad. The forward facing oring was replaced with a lead washer. But I do think it's a spring issue. I remember I squeezed down the valve stem but I'm sure it could use some more.

Well I did the 2004 Sheridan/Crosman C9A first. She's the brass beauty for those of you who haven't seen her before. Her numbers are very similar to the 1978 Dan. I think she would have shot for a higher average if I started over after shot 5. If you cock first before pumping I noticed she gets a little higher fps. This is probably due to a hammer spring being a tad heavy. I've never gone into this rifle. I could have sworn I read that these Crosman made Sheridan's shoot at about this fps? A chrony is simply an invaluable diagnostic tool to help you confirm how your gun is performing. It's as important as pellets and targets. Won't tell you what's wrong with your gun if it's shooting slow but at least you'll know it's shooting slow.
-
I saw a chrony on another forum for $50 & jumped on it. Guy said that he shipped it, but I never got it. I asked for proof that he shipped it & he quit answering my e mails. I was lucky enough to get the $50 refunded back to my account !!!

Sorry, it's been awhile. Vacation, getting caught up at work, child, and training boxers its been a little hectic. Finally, got the 65 Dan out to stretch her legs. See what she's got. I had been debating if I should have sold this or the 78? I think I made the right decisions. I did tell guy if he ever didn't want it anymore that I would be glad to buy it back from him.

Forgot the pic of the 64 Streak above.
Well...back to pumping. Got out the newest addition to the family. It's the '1948-49' Silver Streak I got from CL. The man I bought it from inherited from father in law who bought brand new. He himself has owned it 10-11 years. I've become really fond of her. As you can see she's been used thoroughly. Most of her is down to the bare wood. It is smooth as can be, like its been freshly sanded with 220+ sandpaper. She really shows her age, but is very solid. I think a few parts have been replaced when it was sent in for a reseal by Baker Airguns. She is very slim in the hand. I took some calipers to the grip and it is .21in slimmer from front of grip to back. It was .14in slimmer side to side. Not sure if this was standard, from previous owner sanding it down, or just from being used heavily for 60 years?

My Chrony should arrive tomorrow. I bought a red one. :)
I'm excited about using it with my HW97K and mil dot Hawke 4-12x40 scope BUT I'm really excited about using it with my pumpers. My Benjamin 392 has a peep sight and I want to use it pumped up to different amounts. If I get it figured out just right then it with my rangefinder will be a good combination to have in the field.
-
Thanks Scott, yea she is definitely turning it R rated with the lack of a finish. May have to make some things blurry since we are in a family forum.

Yes, it will make pesting much easier once you know an average fps/pump. Don't let that excitement get to your head. There is a lot of work to be done with fps numbers for pumpers, lol.

Well, this is the Silver I picked up locally. The guy is now a regular here on the GTA. It was a long forgotten rifle his parents hid from him when he was little. His brother had given him a call saying I found something of yours at moms house. It's a 79 Silver Streak, knew I should have held onto the 79 Blue. Looks exactly like the Blue except for finish. The only similarity with the finish is the matte style. I had to order a rebuild kit from Tim cause it wasn't building pressure when pumped. I had opened her up and the rubbers looked good and still soft and leads looked good. She was very dirty so gave her a good cleaning. So I replaced the pump cup and she took air. I could here a slow leak so I kept flushing with SS. The leak has stopped and she shoots. But, the numbers speak for themselves. She looks to need a few more parts replaced:
1. 493
2. 562
3. 549
4. 551

She looks much nicer than the 48-49 Silver, but the performance isn't anywhere near. Goes to show what a difference some TLC make on these antiques. Im going to have to revisit this after a reseal.

Here it is, Double Duce, the rifle that got me back into air rifles and started the addiction. All the blame is on her shoulders or should I say butt stock. She is 2014 Benji 392PA. I've done so much to her. Had this rifle before I was a member here. That's why there is no thread on her. A lot of the mods however did come from gathered threads from here and the yellow. Thank you as an outsider and thank you now as a member. I compiled all the good and bad and picked what I thought seemed to be the best by simple functionality. Didn't have a chrony to actually see what would be better or worse. To list some of the mods: 2 spring valve mod, replaced hammer spring with longer but much weaker, added a small spring for check valve w/ #10 washer, cut the white check valve down to 1/3 of original size, added a bigger middle oring w/ Teflon tape, polished the hammer, bunch of trigger work made the "U" shape at contact point, polished sear engagement w/ hammer, sanded down and polished the top of sear that comes out from trigger housing (this effects cocking effort making it light and smooth), replaced hammer spring w/ lighter one, 2 solid pins. I've changed it up over the years from a peep w/ highlighted front sight, tried scout style w/ 2x20 scope, to its current state getting a BE mount and 4x32 compact scope. Ive made a thread on refinishing the ugly Crosman brown stock to this light blonde finish with Kiwi shoe polish and wax.
It's good to see the number probably took it above factory numbers. There is a decent difference in fps whether you cock rifle before or after pumping. It also retains a small puff which becomes more than a puff if you continue test without emptying valve. As you can see from shot 5 on:
I was pumping first then cocking

Better get an official chrony results before she sells. 2000 Benjamin Sheridan C9A Silver Streak. When I first got her she was a bit rough. Scuffs here and there, paint marks, gunk build up, and wasn't holding air for longer then an hour. She's got the 2 spring mod, lighter valve spring, half check valve, lighter hammer spring, solid pins, trigger work. Than cosmetic work. As usual 14.3 Benji cylindrical pellets on 8 pumps. On number 10 I miss counted and did 9 pumps. Impressive number was holding a bit of air on 9 pumps. Noticed there is a bit of a warm up with her. More so than with some other pumpers. The extreme spread and deviation would be much closer together without the warmup shots 1 thru 3.

This is a beautiful 2002 Sheridan C9A belonging to John (Wildcatter). It was recently bought off of eBay and was working fine when it arrived. After a short time it stopped working so it was sent my way. Well she really stands out with the stamping being highlighted white. The buttstock belongs to one of my rifles as I just need the action to do work on. I had done a 392PA for him prior to this which I need to get up as well. I had went a different route for that one. After, getting to know John I came to realize he likes power. So this rifle I did some power mods. This rifle took to the work positively. The usual 10 shot string at 8pumps with 14.3 Benji pellets:

But yea, let's get back on the ball. I been lazy and not transferring from paper here to the interweb.

Hear is the 69 Blues Streak I posted a couple weeks ago. Let's get the numbers up before she sells and the numbers are lost. When I first got her she didn't hold for long. Roughly an hour and she would be out of air. Someone had either lost one of the roll pins during reseal or who knows. They replaced it with a machine screws and nut. Now, for some reason they decided to use the machine screw and nut on the a truly pump roll pin. Instead of on the front pin that just holds end cap and distributes pumping force. So the hole in the tube got a little big. I tried the roll pin size up, I believe 5/16, and it was too but for the hole. So I banged in an 1/8 solid pin into the 3/16 roll pin. That was a pain to get started with hammer and vise. The usual 8 pumps with 14.3

With a high of 627 and a low of 606... how can the Average be 727.1?
Does your Chrony calculate that? I got 617.3
Might need to check your formulas if using Excel to come up with your numbers...

Good eye Scott. Nah, that was me it was late. I was transferring numbers from paper to here. I had wrote down the full 10 shot string for the 347. Nothing clicked until I wrote the FPE at 16.79. I was thinking "Holy @&$% Batman!! This Streak is shooting strong" haha. I knew something was wrong and noticed my error.
-
Good news is somebody is actually reading your thread and trying to digest the info. :D
-
I also am reading this thread and I'm going to drift it a little bit. Sorry about that but a single thread with that many pictures of Sheridan's is too good to pass up.
Am I the only one who removed the black rubber handguard, then moved the rear sight all the way to the rear to gain sight radius, then replaced the rubber handguard at the front of the rear sight?????
Easy mod to do, takes no parts, modest skills and IMO makes for a longer more accurate sight radius and does not interfere with pumping.
Just wondering.
Last, a thousand thanks for posting all those numbers. Especially the 2 and 3 pump numbers. The vast majority of my sheridan shooting has been done at 2 and 3 pumps, with once in a while a 4 for a rabbit. Almost never at 8, if I needed that much power and range I grabbed the Ruger 10/22.

I remove the rear sight to relieve the clamping pressure so it doesn't cause barrel separation down the road. I move this sight slightly, but not to far from the factory location. Generally forward slightly.
I feel you, most my shooting is with 4 pumps. I did the 8 for rebuild numbers. I'll go back and revisit I'm sure for at least 4 pumps.

1995 Benji 397P. I still regret selling this one. It's been gone about a year now. I acquired it through a trade with a guy off a firearms sight couple years ago. He wanted something in 22 and I just loved the look of the rifle. It was the first P model Benji I owned. It came to me in excellent shape. The 140 I traded him was a little rough and had been fully sanded down to bare wood. Which the guy was more than thrilled about. I did all the grunt work and he got the glory of refinishing. Back to the rifle at hand, this rifle got the full run down even though it was in great shape arriving. I fully took it apart because I was curious about what made it a "P" and not "PA". She got the full touch up on ever single part. Removing rear sight, highlighting front post, sanding contact with hammer, lighter spring, sanded and polished where trigger cylinder came in contact with trigger, lighter valve spring, solid roll pins, full clean lube and moly to all internals. Should of never got rid of her. Well now for the number. These I did with RWS Basic 7.0gr w/ 8 pumps.

The Crosman that got me into tinkering. Came to me brand new in 2014 as a standard 1322 that I've come to know as Pester. She has racked up quite a kill count as you can see. It's actually Pester the Mo&$@er since this is a family sight lets just keep it at that. Over the years its changed looks. Between sighting devices, stocks, LDC, springs, bolts, knobs you name it, it's tried it. She current ditched the Crosman stock for a Mike Chavka wire stock and hydro dipped grips. Which cut down on the overal size which was a big bonus. The LOP is crazy short now, but I've gotten use to it. As you are all familiar that it's hardly the original pistol I bought. Steel breech, extended bolt, chrome handle, ACcustom shroud, 12" MellonAir barrel, NcStar 4x32 compact, American Classic 1377 trigger assembly w/brass trigger, trigger shoe, Max flow TP, grips, wire stock, valve mods and angling exhaust, stuffed piston, oring under pump cup, SS solid pin. Think that's the most of it. It's very consistent, light, compact, and quiet. 14.3 CPUM at 10 pumps.

Well, just got these beauties the other day. The older one (on top) pumps and shoots, but without much force. The bottom one pumped and shoot, but was averaging 570. So took it apart and decided to give it a go. This was be my first 2100 rebuild. After, having it a few days it would hold the air. I would do the half cock method and fire and count how many puffs I would get and it was always 3. So I felt the guts where good, but the pump cup wasn't working the best. So after the clean up, plumbers tape, factory TP seal and decided to try an oring sleeved on the TP section on breech, and some trigger work. With the same method, as above, I get 5 good puffs and a faint 6th. So let me know if these numbers are good? Like I said this is my first 2100. The bottom "newer" 2100 in the pic
Believed these are maxed 10 pumps so with RWS Basic 7.0gr and some oil:

great job Rob, those numbers look exactly right. I found where Tom Gaylord tested a 2100 and he was getting an ave of 745 with 7.3 gr pellets.
https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2012/01/crosman-2100b-multi-pump-air-rifle-part-2/ (https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2012/01/crosman-2100b-multi-pump-air-rifle-part-2/)
and about your serial number - April 06. All crosman guns after 1975 got a 9 digit serial number, and the first three (or sometimes 4) digits represent the date. Just like your 392P.
another comment, after reading the blog entry I posted above. The barrel coming loose from the receiver is exactly the same thing that happened to my 2200 in 1990. that was the shortest lived gun I ever owned. I tried to fix it but never could, so it went in the trash. must be something to watch out for.
-
Ok, oops. Tom's Ave velocity was 645, not 745, so your numbers are 100 fps higher!!! Good job. You must have done something right!

I had seen that, so that was my base number. At the same time I knew the 2100B was the newer ones being made. So I thought maybe that's where the difference was in the FPS. Going by the logic older is better. So I guess I'm getting a little increase from the plumbers tape at breech seal. The main pick up I'd guess is from the oring I added to the breech's TP tube. I tried several different heights for poly tube. It just didn't fitting snug in the cut out at the air tube heading to the valve. Nor did it sleeve around the breech's TP. I tried the TP from my Sears model 1400 it fit tight inside the air tube but the smaller side didn't sleeve to breech's TP. So I dropped the factory black seal back into the air tube and sleeved a oring on the breech's TP tube. I'll get the dimensions for the oring I used so people can try it themselves.

Finally, got around to fixing up this slim stocked 140. When it arrived it wasn't holding and found the valve spring was rusted out. There was a lot of corrosion inside. Metal was surprisingly in good condition, which is surprising. Replaced all rubbers, the valve spring, replacing the quad seal, and swapping out the TP. Had to adjust the piston length as the nut was loose upon disassembly. Ported the bolts holes. She is shooting hot!!
I know the 140/1400 are 10 pump guns, but 8 was more than enough. This time around I did 2 groups the one at 8 pumps and the other at 6 pumps. I used CPUM for the chrony.

Well, today will be something out of the norm. So far everything has been pump rifles. So to spice things up I'd like to add my Huntington Beach Beeman R7. I had another awhile back, it was immaculate and being that I'm not a springer. I felt someone else would appreciate it more. Shortly after I sold it I missed it. This rifle I got locally from a firearm shooter. He didn't use it much had a few scuffs, but blueing good and wood too. This rifle came with the universal muzzle brake, Bushnell trophy scope, and iron sights.
Here is the numbers on her using its favorite pellet the cheap Gamo Super Points 7.87gr. So let me know any of you R7 owners how my numbers are looking for my R7.

Wow surprised to see those numbers out of the 2100. I've always seen closer to 650.
Hey one thing you might consider doing with all this testing, if you're trying to do a service for air gunners everywhere...
Test the velocity at 25 yards versus at the muzzle then use ChairGun to calculate the BC. I'm sure a lot of people would love to know the BC of various pellets out of various guns. Just an idea.
-
I loved to have a secured area for testing at 25 yards. Most I have is around 15 yards. Just getting various numbers up. I know I look around to see FPS numbers on anything I haven't resealed before to get a comparison. Until I can secure a longer private area to shoot I'll have to settle for this. I'd love to have 25, but id settle for 20 too lol.

1999 Sheridan C9A. Had a slow leak when I go it. It was in very good condition looks to have been used when it was first got and then left in a corner forgotten. It got a silver end cap, not sure why? Did a few little things but didn't need much. She's shooting pretty good. 14.3gr @ 5 and 10 pumps.

Thanks for the numbers!

Yea, it's a very nice end cap. Been debating on taking it off and putting it on one of the Silvers. I noticed your forestock is slightly different than mine. Same as the brass C9A is different than both ours. It's also super slender, like a original Sheridan. I'll have to get measurements of thickness on it, but you can see the cut difference on the front.

Great job on the sheridan Rob! sounds like its shooting good.
on the nickel end cap - that's normal. Starting in 1991, all C9s got the polished nickel end cap - silver streaks and blue streaks alike. They kept the silver end cap until sometime between 2000 and 2002. I've seen 2000's with the silver end cap, but the 2002's I've seen have the flat black benjamin end cap. So the change must have occurred in either 2001 or 2002. Before that time, the only Sheridan's that got a black end cap were the polished brass anniversary model in 1998 - they got a black end cap (but round, not flat like the benjamin) to off set the brass.
and about the forestock - in 1991 they went with the "pregnant guppy" style forend when they switched from the C to the C9. It was nice and smooth and rounded/beveled on both ends. Over time it may have gotten a little chunkier, but stayed pretty much the same through 1999. However, in 2000, they changed to the more blocky style that your brass C9A has. At that time(2000), all of the benjamins and sheridan's got that same full length blocky forend. Then in around 2003 they lost the white line spacer in the stock, and then in 2005, they switched to the current stock style with the angle cut stocks and the raised cheekpiece.
there, that's probably more than you wanted to know.

Billy the extent of your knowledge is always amazing.
Just don't use mine for a reference because I honestly believe it is an assemblance of 3 different guns. ::)
