Title: Looking to buy my wife a co2 rifle and I`d like some input.............
Post by: Big Rick on July 04, 2016, 12:13:19 PM
So I`m trying to get my wife into shooting a little bit and think co2 is the way to go for her. She will never hunt, wants something light weight and easy to shoot. What would you recommend and why?

If I was buying for myself I think I`d be looking at a Fusion, buy that`s me.

Crosman 2260 or Heritage I think they call it. Classic rifle with room for growth if perhaps it should become yours someday.

IMHO... best bet.

I think low power (quieter) and accurate are the way to hook someone in.

It's no fun if you can't hit what you're aiming at.

With that in mind, I'd lean toward a Crosman Custom Shop 2400kt with one of the Lothar Walther barrel offerings (coming soon in an 14.5" .22) and a TKO if it's too loud.

Another option in a more "traditional" rifle package would be the 2260 although without the LW barrel you might have to do some work to make it as accurate as possible.

A non CO2 option would be a Daisy 853 from the CMP.  Just over $100 used but reconditioned.  It's a single stroke pneumatic so one pump, cock, load, shoot.  It comes with a decent peep sight setup but can be scoped and it has a LW barrel so it's an accurate shooter.

time will tell about the Custom shop, but I do notice them dropped all mention of either .22 LW barrels or .177 barrels other than the 10.1" (although they once had those as a "coming soon" option).  Crosman is NOT a company that is shy about announcing what they think is coming...but if they don't have it on the site, makes me think they've put those choices on a back burner.

Nope..the SSP isn't "girl friendly"...have tried that, and while that single pump stroke seems easy, most women don't find it so (why...Ireally don't know. Wife has no problem cocking a FWB 124, but finds the pump stroke of a Dasiy SSP to be a strain).

2260 or QB...Crosman 2260 for the lite weight choice.

Try http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hammerli-850-Air-Magnum-.22-Pellet-CO2-Air-Rifle/43835344. (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hammerli-850-Air-Magnum-.22-Pellet-CO2-Air-Rifle/43835344.) Great reviews , and comes with dovetail mounts . Can also be had in .177 if that's your preference.

Man o man...how I personally hate those expensive 88g. AirSourse cartridges,  And I mean expense in terms of how much the co2 costs per ounce in that format.  Great rifle, horrible power source, more expense in converting them to 9oz paintball tanks

Might want to take a look at a QB78. They come in both .22 and .177, have better barrel reliability than the non L/W 22xx's and the standard version is on sale at Midway for $79.99
These can be run from either 1 or 2, 12g powerlets and with the adapter they can be bulk filled.

Do they still make the 78 "standard",,,not the "D".  That old standard sized stock has proved to be much more friendly to small framed folks (small mean/women/teens).

I could go with the QB...it's a little heavier, but a well proven rifle.

BTW: About my last post.  Just usning PA's numbers, 88-90gr. co2 cost almost exactly twice as much as 12gr, co2 costs per ounce (based on a 28gram ounce).  $2.33 vs $1.16.

I strongly second this suggestion.  Light weight, very accurate, simple, easy to shoot, highly modifiable if one wants to do so.  However, an even better choice is

Lower price, better reviews.  Essentially an upgraded version of the Crosman 160.  I love mine!

crosman 1077 is a multi shot rifle that is fun to plink with and decently accurate at short distances

Thank you all for the help. I had not looked at the 2260 which looks like a nice piece. The QB78 was one I was considering due to the lower price and possibility of future mods. I am not in a rush so have time to mull it over as they say. please if you have any more ideas feel free to fill me in and thank you for all of the comments up till now.

Crosman 2400 KT with 18" barrel from the custom shop. Deadly accurate, soooo inexpensive. Very lightweight. She will love it. A you can even have her name laser engraved on the receiver. Most women love seeing their names???

I like the Custom Shop 2400KT also. With the 18" Crosman barrel, basic skeleton buttstock, no sights or optics, and just the blade front sight, it's only $89.68. Get a scope and a TKO muzzle brake, and you have a great shooting light carbine. You could go with the 10.1" Lothar Walther barrel and have a really handy fast handling accurate carbine for a bit more money.

Definitely a Qb-78.  Loads better in the fit and finish department than a 2260 IMO.  And they just "feel" better to shoot, not cheap and brittle feeling.

If she is petite, or not, there's nothing like a vintage Crosman 180. Designed and made to last, in America, when that meant something. Have been known to shoot 1/2 inch at 50 yards.
