Title: weighing pellets - Update - Sharpshooter I am
Post by: jhm757 on June 23, 2016, 04:28:42 PM
In my attempt to upgrade my rank I took a 300 tin of JSB King Heavies and sorted them by weight using an RCBS digital reloading scale.

They ranged from 32.5 to 35.2grs.

There were only about 5 under 33.4

Probably about 1/4 tin between 33.5 and 33.8

Close to 1/2 a tin that were 33.9 to 34.2

Another 1/4 tin or so that were 34.3 to 34.7

And about 10 that were 34.8 to 35.2

So when the winds die down this evening I plan to go out and shoot some more 100yd groups and see if shooting pellets sorted by weight makes a difference.

I will let you all know! I am hoping to upgrade my rank to Expert or maybe even Master!

Head size will also make a difference. What are you going to do place a bunch of targets out. Shoot the different weights on a target and whatever gets you your expert call it good?

i think it was 22, 18.13's that i sorta tested and the heaviest 10 percent were about 5-10 fps slower than the lightest 10 percent. i think weight matters but not as much as dented skirts or head size. this is what i think, not what i know.

I will start by shooting the pellets that are in the 33.9 to 34.2 range and see if that makes a difference.

If I can put 5 in a 1 inch group inside the 4 MOA ring that makes Expert.

5 in a 1 inch group inside the 2 MOA ring ranks Master.

From what I see you only got to do it once to achieve the rank, but it ain't easy!!!

I may check head sizes also and of course reject any damaged skirts.

I just checked about 20 of the 33.9 to 34.2gr pellets and the head size seems to be a very consistent 6.34mm

Time to go get ready to shoot!!!

I have never weighed pellets.... I figure that if the different weight groups are different enough to shoot to a different POI, I would need to resight my rifle for each weight group, to take advantage of that.... I simply can't be bothered.... At the most I can see having a "go-nogo" weight range and simply tossing (or using for testing only) those that are more than, say 1-2 % from the average weight.... For instance, in your case, toss the ones under 33.5 gr. or over 34.7 gr.... The remainder would be a 4% range, which should mean less than a 2% ES due to pellet weight.... at 100 yards, you may indeed be able to see a difference in POI between a 33.5 and a 34.7 gr.... but I kind of doubt you will see either one as significantly out of whack from one of average weight, at 34.1 gr....

Will it give you enough of and edge to get under 1" with 5 shots?.... Maybe.... Of course if you choose the wrong weight group, or don't sight in when you change weight groups, you might end up with an Expert rating and not a Master.... I'd be tempted to sight in with pellets in the main group (33.9-34.2), use those for your N.U.A.H. attempts, use the groups either side of that for general shooting, and toss the few oddballs in the garbage....

Well it seems Sharpshooter is the best I can do!

Sorting pellets by weight did not seem to make a difference. My groups this evening were pretty much the same. I shot a few groups that had 4 shots under 1 inch, but none with all 5 under an inch.

Came real close again! Best group was my best group ever, 5 shots 1.060" (Soooooooo Close!) strangely it was the first group I shot after running out of Official targets and my last group of the evening. The group looks like 4 shots but there are 2 in the same hole by the 9 ring.

The last pic is a nice 4 shot group with one flyer.

Jim,

I think your on the right path.  I would take the time to weigh in excess of 500 pellets, I would select those that are within .5 grains of being the heaviest.  In theory, their flight time should be the most consistent and they should have the least amount of voids.  Finally re-evaluate your shooting form.

good shooting Jim, much better than i ever did with my marauder.

I have tried a lot of things to wring every last bit of accuracy I could get out of it. And have it shooting pretty good these days. It definitely seems to like a freshly cleaned barrel.

I did a little 100yd shooting today (I do almost everyday) but the winds were crazy, only shot a couple targets, didn't get any groups worth posting with the winds the way they were.

I was also trying paintballs at 100yds today, definitely not the right day for that, too much wind, I was trying to play the wind but it was tough it kept changing, I did come real close a few times but never did actually hit one. I will have to try again when I get a calm day! Aim small miss small!!!
