I am probably not the only one that likes to shoot without advertising it to the neighbors with the noise. So I ask this question. Has anyone built an acoustical box that can be set up in front of the gun (around the muzzle) that would deaden the noise of any .177, .22 or .25 while allowing the target to be sighted in? It would have to be set on an adjustable stand to allow shooting from a table or standing rest.

Yep.
Your house.
Shoot from inside with a window open and no one will be the wiser.
Make sure if you're using a scope not to miscalculate the different height of the scope and barrel, and shoot your windowsill.... :o

I have seen a style that uses a 55 gal drum with fiberglass wrapped inside it and mesh wire to keep it packed against the sides of the drum. Almost like a giant glasspack muffler. They had the end of the barrel inside it when shooting. This was on a powder burning rifle so I imagine it would really be quiet for an airgun.

There's a company that makes these things, but for the life of me I can't find the site...

Yes. Used a concrete column forming tube made of thick cardboard. Lined it with carpet. Helped cut some of the noise. Never quite sure how much.

Never tried it, but thinking flow thru muffler

I have some adjustable height acoustical panels coming this afternoon. I will try those. I use a Caldwell Deadshot Magnum Fieldpod for which the panels must be adjusted. In fact, I liked the magnum version so much that I also purchased smaller Fieldpod. Anything used to make the gun quieter must be able to be adjusted for both.
Personally, I would pay $200 for a silencing box that worked properly (no more than a pfft noise wise) and looked decent with adjustable height plus not much bigger than a bread box. It would be worth it as more than one gun could be used with it thus spreading the cost. If I was 30 years younger and looking for a niche market for a good product, this would fit nicely. I am surprised that there is nothing on the market (especially since it could be so cheaply made in quantities large and small).

Target practice with my air rifles was upsetting the neighbor’s dog. ( strange beast, Pit Bull head and neck on a Dachshund body. Looks like something from a cartoon or chernobyl. )
To maintain the peace, I made this shooting muffler from a recycled box and egg crate foam. It sits on wood blocks ( height adjustment ) on my shooting ( picnic ) table. I can’t quantify the noise reduction but now the dog and neighbors don’t notice when I’m shooting.

You may want to carefully check the applicable laws/regulations.
In Canada, for instance, this sort of thing is treated exactly the same as a suppressor, and thus is a "prohibited device", since the Criminal Code prohibits "a device or contrivance designed or intended to muffle or stop the sound or report of a firearm" without specifying that it has to be attached to the firearm.

Hmmm. This looks like it has potential. Can you PM me the dimensions, materials list and further discussion? I have spent a fair amount of money and time on this issue already.
As for legality, not a concern right now. Can worry about that if it is mass produced.
Thanks for the input.

Egg crate foam glued in a 5 gallon bucket.
Cheap, light and water resistant.

A company, TSS, sells a tripod mounted Gun Muffler for firearms. Should be more than effective for air guns.

I always wondered if this would work.

Do you know anybody in HVAC? Even duct board might work. It has acoustical properties.

Our friend Roach Creek used to use a simple box with a couple of holes in it to soften the report of his 257 air canons. He did keep an air stripper on the barrels to help diffuse the exiting air and thus the noise into the box. Stated that it di make the report much less. I don't remember if he ever spoke to how much less, but he did mention that where he was shooting his neighbors, not very close, would regularly shoot high power powder burners, so he didn't really think he needed it, other than to make his shooting a bit more pleasurable.

P.S. It looked a lot like P Engineer's box.

I want thank you all for the replies. Keep them coming as there is merit in most of them that I have to check out.

Years ago I made a box of 1/2 inch plywood 4ft. long 2ftx2ft. lined it with 1 inch furring strips on sides , and pcs of sample carpet. I hung it from the overhang of the eve by the window , it de-fused the noise a lot. you could also put it on blocks or 2x2 legs. I like the egg crate idea it might work, never thought of it.

Same thing I use!

Chris,
I also remember reading that they are considered the same as a silencer and regulated by the same laws.
