Decided it was time and the stock got completely stripped last night. Started sanding today but here's what was hiding under that Hatsan factory finish:
-
Very nice. What kind of finish are you thinking?
How did you strip the factory finish?
-
Boy o boy..
Keep us up to date? No stripper, just sand paper?
Looking good so far...

I've done it to my 95 aswell. Be sure to remove the front checkering. It's as ugly as it could be.
I have almost decided to go full ratrod with my stock, but still thinking about it ::)

Just regular paint stripper for the old finish although that stuff is really on there, had to do it twice. Haven't decided on what i'm going to use for stain yet.

I kinda like that checkering even if cleaning the old finish out of it was a pain..debating actually staining it a different color than what i use for the stock...still not sure yet.

Nice, what type of stripper? Might do this to my 100x stock.
-
Nice!
Steve, do you know if Hatsan has a wood stock with unfinished option available? just in case, I decide to get one later :-)

The Edge rifles will fit in a Striker wood stock but they don't come unfinished, you'd have to strip and refinish the way you want it.

I got the stripper at the local Ace Hardware, Klean Strip Premium Stripper, comes in a spray can. Just make sure you use a good set of gloves and I got one of the mini brass wire brushes to get the old finish out of the checkering...worked really well without hurting the bare wood.
-
Looks good Steve ;)
Did you tape off the checkering before sanding?
I can't see how dark the wood is, but most Hatsan's benefit from a little Walnut or Gunstock stain. After that you can cover with Tru-Oil, Tung Oil or spray Lacquer.

Good Luck and have fun ... :D

I never taped over the checkering, but I was beyond careful about sanding around all of it. First and probably only coat of stain is on and I'm real happy with the color, I used Minwax Gunstock stain for that.
After about 6 hours or so dry time, I went back and did the checkering with Minwax Rosewood stain to bring the checkering out.
Once everything has plenty of dry time, I'm using Minwax Antique Oil Finish in successive coats until I get the sheen I'm after, but for now, here's the stock stained:

Very nice!
Will you do mine? ;D

that's looking great!
-
Very nice!
I like the idea of the second color on the checkering, sure makes it "pop".
-
Looks great my model 95 should be home today and I wish to do exactly like you did especially the different color at the checkering :D
-
Very nice!

-Y
He's gonna do mine FIRST! ;D
That's going to look awesome Steve!

-
Looking good. Will be watching for updates.

I did 3 other stocks getting warmed up to even attempt this one and to be honest, I'm still a little scared I'm gonna screw up somewhere...lol
Every direction on every can has been followed to the letter so far and the Minwax Antique Oil Stain was recommended by Mike at airgunstocks.com after talkig to him a few times in chat about refinishing stocks, what he uses and getting a few pointers....I have 2 coats of oil on it so far, at least 2 to go before I figure out if it's how I want it to look, then you guys get to see how it turned out.
As scared as I am of screwing up mine, I'd be even worse if that stock was one of yours...lol
Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated and hopefully, I'll have it finished for pics by the weekend :)
-
Will be looking forward to the pics Steve!

That looks fantastEve... would you take some picture under sunlight? it would do better justice appearance.

Minor setback...the shop is in the basement which is also where the hot water heater that blew out today while I was at work happens to also sit...in the mad rush to do everything about replacing it, my stock with coat #6 on it got taken down and laid on the work bench...it also wasn't totally dry because when i got home from work and my father was showing me everything, I had to pry it off the rubber bench mat.
I spent an hour wet sanding with 1500 and 2000 grit and I think I have all the imprints out. I also had to reapply the stain on the checkering...tomorrow I'll cross my fingers and start reapplying the oil coat. First coat should tell me if I got the marks out, if not, I'll be stripping and starting from scratch....
-
DANG.... That stinks.
-
OUCH !!! I hate when stuff like that happens. The memory is hard to escape. I hope this won't be the case for you. It was looking so good. You might want to just start over anyhow. One little blemish left over is gonna eat your lunch everytime you see it even if no one else notices. That's just been my experience.
Good Luck man.
-
I hate it when that happens. At least you know that problem shouldn't interrupt your work for another 20+ years.
-
more like 7-10 years with todays water heaters. Mine lasted 7 last time.

Same here. The one we have now is about 6 or 7 years old, probably die before long. The one before it lasted about 7 years. ::)
Sorry Steve!

Ever get that little itch that says things are just going to smooth and right? Been having it since i started but the tank was, according to my dad, just about 22 years old, so I'd say he got his money's worth.
I got about 4 hours until the 2nd side checkering dries enough to try the first new coat of oil...until now the stain on the checkering was the hardest part standing with a small artist brush and painting all the rosewood stain in by hand but I'm not settling,,,if that first coat doesn't look the way I'm after, I'll start again.
And besides, I got time and a dozen other guns I can shoot, one of which is a brand new PCP :)
-

Exactly, they are well-engineered now and last very closely to just over the warranty. In my new-construction neighborhood, we had about 80% of them all go within 6 months of each other, starting about 3 months after the 7-year warranty ended. The rest went within 6 months of that. That's "dang" good engineering.
scp52": glad to see you are still pluggin! Keep us updated, thanks!
-
I...am....stoked!!! I think it just needs to be buffed out for final finish but not a mark in it from the accident a couple nights back...
-
Wow, that was a lucky break! Man that stock looks so darned beeyooteeful I'd be afraid to use the rifle anymore, probably just mount it on the wall in a glass case. ;) Outstanding work Steve!
