Title: sheridans
Post by: jsquared on April 25, 2016, 10:03:50 PM
A couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to pick up a blue streak and a 312 both in nice shape. They both hold air and are very accurate. I also picked up a 50th anniversary Sheridan in the box. It came with the cleaning kit , a 50th anniversary patch and all the paper work. It is 128 out of 1700. It is in excellent condition.  My problem is I don't know if I should shoot it or not. I like to shoot all my guns and really don't collect them if I can't shoot them. I guess what I'm asking is do I keep it or sell it. Any input would be great.

Shooting it helps keep it in good condition.  Shoot it often so the seals don't dry out and the valve doesn't start to leak air.

IMO, the only reason to NOT shoot it is because you bought it to sell it for a profit, not to enjoy it. I shoot everything I own, and I don't believe you will devalue the gun by shooting it. Nobody will ever know how many shots have been shot, and unless you trash the wood, it should hold its value.

I'm sure others will have their own opinions.

Shooting it, IMO, is not going to reduce it's value near as much as leaving it in the box and letting it dry out. That could cost the next owner a reseal right out of the gate. I would shoot it and not abuse it if I had any plan to sell it in the future. I would handle the box with as much care as the gun. Don't over lube. Don't over pump. Wipe the gun down after use and store it with a couple pumps in it. I would keep it in a case and store the empty box somewhere with the rest of the contents in it. Even a gun that has been lightly used along with the original box and contents has a greater value than one without. On the other hand.. If I bought it to enjoy, as I do all my air guns, I would shoot it and shoot it often. If down the road I sell a gun I am happy to get out of it what I have in it. Any profit may pay for repairs, upgrade and shipping fees that I may have spent. It makes me feel real good to pass a deal on to another member. No reason for someone else not to enjoy an air gun just because, for some reason, I don't.
Congrats on you finds.

I agree that you should shoot and maintain it properly.

Two Sheridan's and a Benjamin 312 is a nice start on a collection!

Congratulations on a great find! That's the kind of haul we dream about! 8)

If that blue streak is a non crosman Racine gun, then you've got a real Sheridan to shoot so I'd just sell that dolled up crosman for a profit and buy as many pellets as you can.

thank you for the opinions you gave me the answer I was looking for. I got a good deal on the 3 and kicking myself for not buying the other 2. I'm looking forward to shooting them all.

He had a Racine 397p and another blue streak. I thought I was going to be able to go back and buy them. I needed to come up with more funds. He found a buyer for all guns he was selling. :(

Well, it sounds like you got the best 3 of the 5!

Well done.
