Hi Guys,
I have spent the last few years shooting only benchrest, and this year I'm adding FT to the list. In preparation for the season, Jim from Precision Airguns and I have been shooting FT matches on the International Benchrest Targets and having mini competitions when we can fit them in. Our format was to shoot 2 BR cards in the sitting position (50 shots), one vertical row of sighters (5 shots) standing, and one vertical row of sighters (5 shots) kneeling at 24 yards to give us a total of 60 shots. 24 yards was chosen because we both had the ability to shoot 24 yards indoors and the weather was not yet conducive to outdoor shooting for either of us. That has changed for me, and I'm thinking Jim is getting close to more reasonable outdoor shooting weather, too.
I propose that we just make the distance 25 yards and shoot the GTA 30 yard Rested targets of the appropriate caliber.
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=50.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=50.0)
I shoot .177 and use the .22 caliber (55) target and a .22 caliber scoring plug to make things easier and more inline with the benchrest matches I'm accustomed to.
At the moment, I don't really see any reason to make multiple classes besides just separating PCP from Springer. I shoot WFTF, and Jim shoots Open....both with PCPs, but we just shoot head to head.
I'm not sure if there will be any real participation from forum members, so I say we just lump Hunter, Open, and WFTF classes together.....and then the same for the guys shooting Springers.
So here are the rules.
Print 3 of the above referenced 30 yard rested targets of your caliber.
Shoot 2 1/2 targets (50 shots) sitting in you FT class appropriate manner at 25 yards. Please shoot vertical columns of 5.
Shoot 1 vertical column (5 shots) standing at 25 yards.
Shoot 1 vertical column (5 shots) kneeling at 25 yards.
Score your targets like you would for the 30 yard Rested match and post them here with the overall 3 target total.
If you miss the target rings altogether.....please count that as a 6.
I'm going to shoot my targets a little later today and will post them here after I'm done.
Lets use May 1st @ 7:00 PM as the deadline for submitting scores.
Good luck, guys....and I hope we can get some participation as this will be a great practice for tuning up out FT shooting skills.

Saw Jim at the Findlay show a few weeks back. He mentioned some kind of friendly comp with you. Looks like fun.
Here is mine. Not sure if X's are the ones that take out the pin or ones that are cleanly in the middle ring without clipping the black. Either way, here it is:

Steyr LG100 HR
March 10-60 (shot @30x)
JSB Express 7.87

Hi Tyler....good shooting! I just shot my first FT match 2 weeks ago, and had a great time. It's a nice change of pace for me, and very tough.
I'm happy you decided to shoot these. It appears that you shot the .25" caliber target....so you probably did better than you scored.
There are caliber specific targets at the link. If you plan to score with a normal .22 cal benchrest plug....use the MOA6_30YDx20_55 target. If you want to just score .177 pellet edge....use the "45". See below. I shoot the .22 cal target "55" and use a plug just like you would on a benchrest target.
Choose the target that matches your caliber: "45" for 0.177 (4.5mm), "55" for 0.20 or 0.22 (5.5mm), or "635" for 0.25 (6.35mm) caliber:

Oh, and X's just have to touch the pin on these targets.

I'll get in on this, maybe not this one but soon. Good practice. Thanks for posting Michael.

Brent...hope you get a chance to shoot.

I realized that as I printed another batch to practice on down the road. Printed the .177 cal verison and scratched my head wondering how many X's I might have gotten. But none the less, good practice. Thanks for sharing

There must be more than a couple FT shooters out there that could use some positional practice and friendly competition. Tyler set the bar pretty high, but that's good motivation for the rest of us to work hard to improve.

I haven't shot field target yet but I would like to participate in this match(as pitiful as my score will be :o). Hopefully I can get the targets in before the end date.

You've got plenty of time, Marty. I hope to keep these going if guys are willing to participate. I talked with Jim today, and he's going to try to get in a few targets this week.

I shot another set in Open class. Shanked a few kneelers....last time it was the standers. I might try this class next time I get to a FT match. I like the added wind "resistance". lol
Still didn't beat Tyler. ;D

Ok, I've never shot ft, but this looks fun. Do you shoot each card at a differently? I'm seeing 10x on one, then 7x,then 3x. I understand 50 shots sitting then 5 standing and 5 kneeling. Is it different power on scope?
-
Hi Tim,
The x's are part of the score. If you touch the 10 ring (the inner part of the black is the ten ring on the 22 cal target) you score a 10. If you touch the center pin...it's a 10x.
This is the same target that is used for the GTA 30 yard rested matches....so there are details about how to properly score them on the 30 yard rested thread. It seems a little strange at first...but you will pick it up fine.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks, I have been reading official ft rules and it makes little more sense. So in the storing position, you are on the ground, or no more than 6"of the ground if I'm reading this correctly? Also, power allowed on scope cannot exceed 12x? But seems some shooters change scope power for each card. Am I understanding this correctly?
-
There are essentially 3 ft classes.... Not including the springer versions.
Open class, WFTF, and Hunter. They all have their own specific rules. Sitting shots in open and wftf are done usually sitting on a bag not more than 6" high.... Hunter is usually shot sitting on a bucket and using shooting sticks for gun support. Hunter and open allow up to 20fpe...and wftf is limited to 12 fpe. Open and wftf are not limited to scope magnification....hunter is max 12x. There is a lot more to each class than that... See the AAFTA rules for a more thorough explanation of each class. Google AAFTA and look at the class rules.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Mike, much help. Think I'll shoot one in hunter class tomorrow. Found the official rules here in one of the gates so I'll read them over so I'm certain to shoot according to rules for hunter class. Should be a good time!

Michael .... I shot these in a landscape orientation do to the fact that my outdoor pellet trap is set up that way. If that is not acceptable, no problem I had fun shooting the targets. Besides from my score I could sure use the practice. ;D

Good shooting, Marty.
I don't think I have shot more than 10 shots through a spring gun in my lifetime. I know it's not easy, though.
Doesn't matter how you hang the target...I was just suggesting the column format since it works out numbers wise.

This looks like a fun match, see if I can manage to shoot an acceptable score.
-
Ok....first ever Field Target Shooting Match is in the books. Tylers score probably should have been higher since it was shot on a 6.35mm target...next time.
1st Place PCP Tpatner412 587/600
2nd Place PCP michaelthomas 579/600 20x
1st Place Springer marty2 541/600 7x
Good job, guys....and thanks for participating. I was hoping for a more FT guys to jump in....but such is the way things go.
I'll post another thread for the next match, and maybe we will get a few more takers.
