Title: Not Just Your Normal RWS-94
Post by: gene_sc on March 29, 2011, 05:09:30 PM
Long time project finally come together. With the help of Rocker1 and a few tricks of my own we now have a Custom Gas Ram RWS-94.. This is a Cometa 400 power plant made for RWS in the 90's. Also same power plant as the Fenix series AG's. Right down to the trigger group.

I started by making a Fenix barrel shroud look alike a year ago. Then sent Rocker1 the stock so he could bring it back to original color. At first I was just going to tune it like a regular springer and add a few of my  touches...:) But I got to thinking that sure would be a very nice smooth cocking and shooting AG wiff a gas ram in it..:) So I broke out the calipers, mics etc. and started adding things up and subtracting and re- adding...:)

Finally today I put her all together and boy what a surprise. Smooth as glass cocking and the shooting cycle is very doctile. FPS was dead nuts on 825. The reason for it being low is because the piston was so light weight. No where to add weight or make a new piston without more machines...:). But I am very pleased with the outcome and she sure shoots straight. Another keeper for my collection of Ladies...:)

I will list some pictures of parts and the final pictures. She is sporting a Tasco re boxted Busnell Legend 4-28 X 40 AO target scope. Tasko's version...:) Oh while I was fiddling around with the project I wanted to improve the trigger pull. She is set dead on 1lb average. And past the bounce test.

Mark she is a .177 cal and shoots JSB Exacts accross the chrony at 820 to 825 fps. Like I mentioned the piston has no weight to it so it is not real powerful house, but very doctile, smooth and accurate.

Thanks Bart. Depending on the piston and trigger setup is the main prerequisite. Of course there are other variables that need to be considered and calculated out.

That's a cool gun Boss. Between you and David it can't be anything but top of the line. Even if it is in a line by itself.

The mod was quite simple. You have to remove the spring guide from trigger block. Once removed ou have to chuck up the trigger block in lathe. You then use a boring bar to open up the hole to the size of the big end of gas ram. Depth is an issue that would be an issue on each model. Since the tolerance are not the same on all production guns. The trigger seer and piston seer slot needs to be milled around 1/8" fruther towards rear of gun. This very critical. When dealing with seer lockup you have to be very very accurate on your cut. I did not take pictures of the process but do have some pictures for illustration.

I made a tool to clean out the inside of piston to true up full length of I/D of piston. Ram fits perfect then. Also used a delrin washer at bottom of piston to keep piston shaft centered.

The picture illustrates where to open up hole. Also picture of a previouse RWS-94 I tuned and sold way back when...:)

Wow, I want one, too.  Very nice.  Your mods look fairly simple if you have the right machines and tools, its the knowledge of what to mod and how to mod it.  These are the things I would like to do as I learn more about airguns from the people on this forum and actually using them.

That's awesome Gene! How much did the piston run? What was the total cost of the conversion?

For anyone who wants to start on this with a new gun, I know where you can get the Cometa 400s!!!
