Title: Mount question from a novice air rifle guy who's trying to get started
Post by: Revellyre on March 09, 2016, 10:43:45 PM
I have a Hatsan 125 Sniper Vortex, which, I believe, has a  weaver mount (please correct me if I'm wrong on that), and would like to place a set of picatinny rings on it.  This must require some kind of adaptor, since the rings are too big to fit on the rail as is, so my question is, what kind of adaptor do I need, and could someone suggest one of the very best ones on the market.  I'd love to have one with a quick detach mechanism but if no such creature exists, I'll take what I can get.  I just want it quickly so I can get started with distance shooting with a scope, since my eyes are too bad/old for iron sights.

Thanks a lot!

Jay

Accessories designed for a Weaver system will, in most cases, fit on a “Picatinny” system. The reverse, however, is probably not the case. Due to the larger recoil groove, “Picatinny” accessories will not fit a Weaver system. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, but for a good rule-of-thumb, “Picatinny” won’t fit Weaver, but Weaver will fit “Picatinny”. Get some good Weaver rings for your scope, butt it up against the scope stop plate, and you should be good to go.

The Hatsan 125 appears to have both dovetail and Weaver mounts.  You can mount Weaver rings directly on the gun.  Just be sure they are the right size for your scope - 30mm or one inch.  A 30 mm scope tube is a bit sturdier than the one inch.

So, essentially, all those picatinny mounts/rings that I have lying around collecting dust are absolutely useless?

You can try them and see. You will find that the length of pull of the 125s can make it challenging for eye relief. I used a one piece mount (leapers/UTG) removed the factory stop and use the stop pins to get the mount at the end of the rail toward the stock. Then a long scope to get enough length for eye relief. Others use cantilever mounts to move the scope further back. Might need to try some various combinations to find what works best for you.

Terminology has you messed up. Picatinny and weaver are the same thing. 11mm and dovetail are the same thing.

A gun with grooves 11mm apart machined into the top of the receiver parallel, running length wise takes a 11mm or dove tail mounts.

Your Hatsan 125 has a weaver/picatinny rail with squared  grooves cut in it cross ways. "BUT" the rail on Hatsans also has groves the length of the rail so you can use 11mm/dove tail rings. That confuses new guys sometimes. I've only seem them on Hatsans.

The picatinny/weaver rings or scope mounts are about 1 inch wide on the bottom and when you look at the bottom there is a bolt running through it that is exposed and fits into the cross groves.

The weaver rail on the Hatsans is mounted to far forward for most people to get good eye relief so you need an off set mount to get the scope back close enough to your eye so you have a clear sight picture in your scope.

If the mounts you have collecting dust are weaver/picatinny they will work on your Hatsan 125. I have never seen a 125 or 135 without a weaver/picatinny.

If you like, go to Pyramyd Air, click accessories, click scope mounts and rings etc., click one piece mounts. The first one top of the page is a Leapers Accu-shot off set for 1 inch scopes. Part# PY-A-1826, $14.95. I've got that one on my Hatsan 135, 155 and Dominator 200s carbine and the 100X and 155 I sold. Works perfect.

On a side note, do not tighten the rings on the tube more than 15# per inch, and the base of the scope should be no more than 35# per inch. :)

Hi Jay,

I have a 135 which also has a very long length of pull and (in my opinion) poorly placed channels for weaver-style rings.  I have used both the UTG Offset mounts and now more recently UTG one-piece mounts.  Of the two I prefer the one-piece mounts.  The offset moved the scope adequately rearward but would not remain tight on my particular rifle.

I don't know if the extra fastener or extra length makes the difference, but the one-piece mount just seems more stable.  I should also add that while the weaver grooves don't go very far back on the 135, the dovetail grooves do so I was able to place the scope pretty far back in spite of not being offset.

Here check out these photos:

I should also mention that I eventually chopped the butt-end of the stock down too.   It helped.  Unfortunately on a synthetic stock (125) this won't be possible...
