Title: weakening spring on 34
Post by: thekid on March 24, 2011, 11:25:21 PM
well I was getting 925ish with cphps, But after about 70 shots today at the warehouse shooting at 40 yards,

I brought her home and wiped her down with a silicone cloth let her sit for a few hours in the safe, pulled her out put her across the chrony and she is now sitting at 887,  so the spring is going kaput.

once the money starts to roll since I have been laid off for 2 months due to bad winter, I will install a kit.

Any thoughts to which one?  vortek or maccari..  input please.Rob

I got the Maccari with apex seal in my 34 .22. Super smooth shooter @ 730 FPS with 14.6 H&N FTT. Over 1000 rounds and still 730 FPS. ;D

thanks for the quick reply, I can pick those up at specialty shooting sports in Canada for $99.

could probably get one in a month, I guess I'll let her rest while I shoot the 350 .177.

I meant scopesandammo.com, still like to hear more thoughts if anyone else feels like chiming in, she is a great shooter and want what is best for her.Rob

Rob, if I'm reading you right I don't think you have a spring problem at all. Your chrony reading may or may not be telling you the truth. Readings can vary due to various factors so always check it a couple of times. But even if it is telling the truth your small velocity drop is not an indication of a problem. If you've been shooting the rifle for a few thousand shots it wouldn't be unusual to slow down a little. But with your #'s, your rifle is still shooting pretty hot for a 34. I'd say what you are seeing is normal break in. Lot's of 34's settle  in the 850ish range once they are well broken in. I personally wouldn't consider replacing your spring or even consider it "tired" until velocity drops much closer to 800 fps.

Still great numbers from that spring.  If you plan to toss it away, please consider sending it to me....I can always use it in one of my springers.  I'm in Montreal.
I've to check out scopesandammo.com

Thanks for all the replies everyone!!!

I had posted before about this air rifle and putting quite a few 10.5 grains through her like 3 maybe 4 tins of 500.

The spring ends were bent,  and I know at some point I will have to change her out, I might have even broke one of the ends.

When I open her up to change things out I will find out, until then I guess she will continue to get used.

Was really looking for a consensus as to what others are using then go by the numbers.

Again thank you all for your help. Rob

austin 870..  This ag was tuned by me and I am no expert, But she is incredibly accurate and smooth.

If I do my part she will definately do hers, the shot cycle has not changed at all.

I opened her up to take a look and all is still fine, a little lube is entering the combustion chamber seeing as it is not as cold as it was.  On another note the pellets giving me these numbers are from a brand new tin.

But all that said she is still a sweet shooter and was punching through 1/2 in plywood and dinging up the garbage wheel barrel at 40 yards.

I will wait to change things out, I guess if it aint broke don't fix it applies right now. Again thanks to all who responded it is nice to know that there are others that know way more about this and they are willing to share.Rob
