So there i was sitting on the couch folding laundry watching the fights on tv then it happened! The ding donger i put up saturday went off. I jumped up ran to the bedroom grabbed my condor and fired up the scope. Slid out on the back porch and watched as it trotted off to the rocks and out of site. dangit! I stayed out there nice and quiet cause you could hear it down in the trees moving so it did not run off. Well she made the mistake of coming back about 2 minutes later. Sniffing around, head just out of a good shooting angle. Made a squeek noise and she looked up but the tree branch blocked a clean shot. She moved out a little sniffing around again head behind a big stump. Man the wait was killing me. She finall cam out in the middle of the yard back to me as if she was leaving. Made the squeek again looked right at me then started to walk away. Put the croshairs right where they needed to be and squeeked one Last time. She looked right at me croshairs right between her eyes and POP! Dropped like a brick. Legs straight out and started screaming like crazy. Was so loud. After about 10 seconds she popped up ran 10 feet head first into a boulder and was down. She picked up her head so put a 2nd round right in the back of the head and it was over. First shot hit about 1/2 inch to the center of her right eye pushing it almost out of her head. With the amount of blood in the right ear and leaking out that side of the head id say the 45 gr slug blew right threw the haed and exited the ear. Got her all skinned up, buried the head in the yard as my ants have moved somewhere else.
Weighed in just under 26 lbs. Will make a nice trophy! Thanks to tony, dyotat, john, rsterne, salt and a few others for all the help, parts and bullets. Got my confidence back in my cannon! Cant wait for the next one.

Fantastic DJ ;) great shooting and pic and the Yote looks like a youngster. Get em while their still young and stop the threat before they become a real pain in the pellet pouch hehe. Ed

Way to go DJ, I knew you'd be getting one soon.
-
Thanks all! Yeah this was my little one I called early bird cause she shows up every night before all the others nice and early and like clock work.
Got me a 1/2 sheet of plywood from the recycling center and just need to get home and tack up the skin now. I have a 7 ft tall chain link dog pin we don't use so will pin it up and put it in there to dry and keep it safe from pesky critters that may mess it up.
Cant wait to get the skull all cleaned up to see the damage it did to that. 35 yards and it smashed her good. John builds some nice slugs. It went exactly where it was pointed.
Loveing that ding donger also. Works like a charm.
Will pull all the game camera cards tonight also to see if I got the shot on video. 2 of the 3 were going on and off so it looked like a strobe light show in the scope. lol
Started making the kissing/squeeker noise about 5 or 6 days ago and they all stop to look. My wife said she heard me do that and was laughing cause she knew it was about to be lights out for the yote.
I think my son is as excited as I am to see the skull.

Good job !! Ihave no love for Yotes, they have run off with more than a couple of my pets. shoot some more of them, ha ha . Keep up the good work. :D
-
Good job DJ. Getting a yote with an air rifle is a solid trophy.

I am very very jealous! i have the Condor SS dialed in at 70 FPE with 45 grain slugs (840 fps) and i really plan on seeing what she can do to a yote... i can hand call like a Son of a Gun but i just haven't gotten any to come in. Out in vegas we used to hunt yotes a lot and i called in quite a few out there.
-
good shooting, and nice write-up.
I'm currently getting my custom .30 Rainstorm set up for some yote hunting hopefully soon. I've got a bunch of the new .30 Polymags that need some testing to find how far they will group nicely, then it'll be game on.

Congrats! That is awesome!

Thanks gents, I am excited about this one. Its the 4th one Ive hit in a month. We have all been watching the game cams getting their pattern down. The ding donger was the final puzzle piece. That thing is awesome!
I am not even giving them the chance of messing with my dogs. I got 2 shepherds that get very excited when the yotes come around an man they were all kinds of worked up when this one went to screaming. Would not be a good scenario for my house pets. they think they are tough but a wild animal will make short work of a house dog. So I am thinning them out.
454, I saw your thread on your blue condor. nice setup! 70 fpe will probably do it. I was in the hunt for the 100 fpe club but am pretty happy after seeing what 90 does to a frying pan. now I know yote skulls are not a problem.
The skull will hang on the wall in the garage next to my Gar skull. Will look real nice there.
And I still have my squirrel I shot the other day and stuffed in the tree!
Ill keep blasting them till they get the point to go hang out somewhere else.

Nice shot!!!
You said that was the 4th you had hit in a month. What happened to the other three? Bad shots?

2 ran. 1 was hit right behind his eye and knocked it out. We tracked it into the neighbors property but lost the trail in all the junk. One we never found a trail. I hit it right in the head from 20 yards almost straight down. It let out a whimper and froze. So i thought it was a done deal. When we got down there it was gone. Checked all my game cameras and nothing as far as it leaving. Almost like it evaporated. Still has up puzzled because of where it was when hit there was no way to move and not trigger a camera. I bought a 5th one because of that.
These suckers are tough.

Great work! Nice job with the follow up to getter done. Wild critters are far tougher then most can imagine.
Someone shoots me in the eye I'm curling up and crying for my mommy.
I nailed a nice size coon in the noggin with a .25 polymag, saw the death dance so put my tools away. Went out to claim my prize only to have it growling at my with 1 eye blown out :( Felt real bad about that, so I upped my power level considerably. No runners now :)
Keep up the great work!

Congrats! Nice shooting!

Nice job DJ! I enjoyed the story.
There 's really no small game critter that can escape the Condor, but we see time after time how important shot placement is. Coyotes (and coons) need to have the brain taken out more than any other critter. No other shot really works quickly on them unless you get lucky and take out the heart with a vitals shot. The first off-center/eye-shot you took had done it in as it collapsed a few feet away, but it's good that you put another one in it to end it quickly.
Have you thought about swapping out the .22 barrel with a .25 on your Condor? The .25 will help when the shot is slightly off, plus you get a greater choice of heavy slugs. I personally don't shoot slugs. My .25 Condors have dropped many bandits and a fox with ease using 31gr Kodiaks, and I had the power dialed down mostly around 70-75fpe. Sometimes I use 43gr EJ's and they are just as deadly. I don't like shooting at 80 or 90fpe because the TT shroud is not as effective, but around 70-75fpe with 31gr Kodies (1K to 1,030fps) it's not bad at all.
Shoot, a Fiat commercial just came on TV showing a Groundhog emerging from the burrow! Dang, I am getting withdrawals now :(

Just checked my game cameras today and got the shot on the video! Will post soon. Man it dropped like a rock when hit. Didnt get the jump up and run though. May switch my game cameras to a 20 second video. Also have a pair of yotes that are in and out. Always together 2-3 times a night. They are on the chopping block.

Love the pic of Mr T. Got the skin outback drying out. Should be dry by tomorrow. A friend of mine said he just washes them then dries them out over and over to make them soft. Think Ill wait till the wife go's to prescot before I pull that one. She wont understand me washing the skin. think Ill line dry it though, don't want to cook it and make the dryer stink like yote skin. LMBO! I am kidding about the washing machine will research how to soften it then decide what I want to do to finish it. Its just going in the garage wall for now anyway.

Waiting for that video DJ!! :) And also looking forward to you taking the rest of the marauding Yotes.

Will hopefully have the video of that one and the one I pegged last night up. Will also remount the video camera to look through the scope now that I have my confidence back. Was getting frustrated there for a bit.
