Great job! That is the best looking 101 stock I've ever seen. (Not that I've seen a whole lot  ;) )

THANKS! It took a little bit of extra time to get the most out of the grain. But, it was worth it.

Oh man !!! you ruined the surprise.... lol just kidding. I wasn't sure what laid underneath whatever someone had put on that thing. I'm pretty sure it wasn't born that way. I wasn't even sure the stock was going to match the forearm. You're doin a great job... Thanks man.

yeah, the stock and forearm are pretty close. that thing was repainted once, as well. I found a couple of runs, while I was giving it the initial going over. I also got rid of a couple casting marks, on the receiver, that were bugging me. all in all, I think you'll be pleased.

I'm sure I will... only one problem... As some know, Betty Lou and I shoot together. We like to shoot guns that are closely matched. When she sees that 101 sitting nest to her '48 Rochester.... umm.. well, you know.

Maybe you should have your gun professionally restored. :o

That's the one you got from me Bill? Looks good!

I thought Betty Lou didn't like shooting that since it was hard to load? If that's the case, maybe a 102 is in order... I happened to find one on craigslist, maybe he'd be willing to ship... PM to follow...

We found Betty Lou a Rochester. It shoot good but need help in the cosmetic department. Yep, that's the 101 from you.

Nice wood...errr...you know what I mean.  "It's got a lot to say," my neighbor the cabinet maker would say. I like the look of the 101, how does she shoot?
Title: Re: Just a tease

I've heard people compare them to the power of a 140. I've owned this one and several 140s and I don't think they do. I mean, I would shoot a rabbit within 25yds with it but, it just don't have the crack that a 140 does. As far as I know it's shooting as well as it ever has. No leaks and a new pump piston seal. Longhunter has one of his own that is freshly sealed and will compare them when mine is back together. We'll know more then.

I know mine is doing 635 with 10 pumps. It's almost as strong as my dans. They'll do 660 on 8. 12 pumps on the 101 gets me 660-664.

your 101 definitely shoots as hard as a 140. I chrono'd it at around 635 on 10 pups. that's with 14.3 gr cph's.
as far as the Rochester, if Betty Lou will part with it for that long, sure. ;D ;D
Title: Re: Just a tease
Post by: avator on February 28, 2016, 08:26:38 AM
LOL... I have a feeling that's going to depend on how long I want to let her shoot the 101 until the Rochester is done.

Would one of you guys PUHLEEEZE put a finished product picture up of that 101?!? I'm jonezin like a junky to see what it looks like now. That said, I'm no expert (barely a novice) but the velocity longhunter posted (635 FPS on 10 pumps w/14.3 CPs?) sounds pretty freakin' good to me.

According to Scott, that gun will be in the mail and on it's way to me the first of the week. You can bet your boots I'll post pics when I get my hands on it. It was a great gun before I sent it to him and now it's going to be a great looking gun as well.

Scott, can you nail down the year of that one? I know they began making them around '37.

Scott, can you nail down the year of that one? I know they began making them around '37.

not sure. I know it has the early style peep, ( which I straightened out, by the way ) and a brass front sight. not to mention the straight bolt.
the brass front sight blade MIGHT be an indicator that it was made prior to '42.
only problem is, the gun has a 5 ring hammer. that should make it post WWII. ( I think )??
the only 101/102's that you can easily nail down, as far as age, are the " clickless", and the '49's like mine. the clickless were made for only a certain number of years. the '49 model is the ONLY one that incorporated the bolt retaining plate, at the rear of the receiver.
not having serial numbers, or some type of record of models/changes, makes dating things exceedingly difficult.
you should consider checking out the vintage airgun forum. there's a bunch of us old farts over there. I'm just know there's got to be someone there, who knows more about these guns, and how to date them, than I do.

Post by: avator on February 29, 2016, 08:57:35 AM
Yes, I also had it pegged for a pretty early one. Definitely within that '37 - '41 range. The 5 ring might put it later in the range. Some of the older stuff like this went thru a transition period where old stock got used up. It's really hard to say where a gun has been during it's 80 year life and who did what with it. Every now and then I check that knob to make sure it's tight. It may have been lost one time and replaced. I am going to make a small wooden loading tray for it and try to match the color of the stock. Nothing permanent, just a tight fitting small block with a pellet groove in it to make loading a bit easier. I know I'm proud to own it. It will look sweet hanging in out home and we'll enjoy shooting it. Thank you for making it look great.

loading tray won't work. the bolt won't close.
I can't wait to "see" your reaction to the 101, when you get it back. I think you're going to love it.

Oh well, guess i'll have to make do. I may have to hide it, Betty Lou already has wide eyes on it.

Scott definitely knows how to restore a 101. He did a great job on mine. Can't wait to see Avator's 101.

Post by: TooJung2Die on February 29, 2016, 10:52:54 AM
Yes, 101's are really hard to pin down to a year of manufacture. Crosman would redesign the valve but continue to use the old parts in manufacture until they were gone. 101's sent in for repair came back with the most recent valve parts installed. Owners would do the same thing with the internals and the sights. So you more often than not find a mix of parts from various years in a 101 when you take it apart. Unless you have one that has a feature unique to a certain year like the clickless stock, bolt retainer or wrinkle finish, a best guess is the best you can do. Be happy and enjoy owning and shooting a real classic.

John, have you ever paid any attention to the stamped numbers on the receivers?? I think I might have figured them out. they seem to be dated in the same manner as the sheridans, ( bassackwards ), with the exception of the month is a number, instead of a letter. ( 12-30-63 becomes 36-03-21 ). now, does anyone know if they were stamped at the factory, when serviced, or at the factory authorized repair centers?? I have seen several cases where the stamping also occurred on the pump lever, and also the lever link. in those cases, the numbers almost always match the number on the receiver. could this have been a way of tracking service, or repairs?

Seems I saw a number stamped on a pump linkage somewhere before. IIRC it was only 4 digits.

"Old School" was at the house when I got. WOW !!!  Scott (longhunter) did a great job of refinishing this gun. I haven't got a chance to put the rear peep back on it or shoot it because work always seems to get in the way of play around here. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. Probably this evening. Thanks Scott !!!

Like I said... I didn't really get much time to spend with it. I took BL out to dinner last night and it was late when we got back. What I did get to see was real nice. The gun shot well before I sent it so I would imagine that hasn't changed. My sister is coming in for a visit this weekend and that always includes lots of shooting. I do have to work tomorrow and do the grocery shopping thing tonight but, Sunday it should see lots of action.

Yeah they do. That's why I got one to begin with. They're also accurate as all get out. What amazes me is that you have almost the same power as a dan, with half the pumping effort. From what I can tell, the valves are pretty close to the same,  internally. I can't figure it out.

Got a chance to take a few pics. I hope they show the awesome job Scott did on this gun. I might need to do my little ink pen filler mod to the front blade. My old eyes have trouble seeing it. Man, they just don't make them like this anymore.
Thanks Scott (Longhunter)
