Title: Remington Express $79 at Gander MTN in Fayettevile, N.C.
Post by: Bryan Heimann on February 15, 2016, 02:03:52 PM
I picked one of these up last night for $79.  $100 total with tax and a $15 warranty against pretty much anything from Gander.  Pretty good deal I think.  This is easily the nicest air rifle I have ever paid less than $100 for.

.177 cal.  Trigger isn't bad. Little spongy through the first stage, feels like the weight gradually increases through the squeeze.  It definitely has lawyer springs on it, still decent and breaks crisply and predictably.  Stock screws were loose, deiseling hard, buzzy shot cycle, no surprizes and easy fixes.  Took off the stock, applied maccari tar to the spring through the cocking slot, pulled a dozen dry patches down the barrel (very oily), wiped off the breece and piston face, and tightened the stock screws down.  No loctite for now. Shimmed the breech seal for good measure.  Sounds like a lot but these steps take less than ten minutes and I always do this with any new springer.   No more spring buzz,  not deiseling near as bad, and first 5 shots off hand at 7 yards indoors, all holes touching.  Might have to write up a little review, I like it :)

Great rifle for the price. Ive taken quite a few rats with mine.

Still getting used to the trigger though.

The weight can be adjusted by the flat slotted screw.  Just be careful, if you adjust it too low i believe the sear won't catch.  You can probably put a longer, lighter spring in it though.  I will probably attempt to use one from a ballpoint pen.

I think the phillips screw adjusts the second stage somehow, but mine's got some serious torque on it and probably some thread locker.  I tried to loosen it a bit but the screw head began to strip out as soon as I applied some force.  I am gonna order some factory springs, seals, screws, and etc. so I can tinker with this gun a little bit.

I took the action out a little bit ago, screwed around with the trigger a little, put it back together and fired 5 shots with a different pellet.  Same poi as before, but in a single hole about a 1/3 inch edge to edge.  This is only about 7 yards or so, mind you.  But it shows potential.

I put the scope and rings on the X3.  I can already tell the rings and scope can't handle this rifle.  I will have to get some good BKL rings or maybe a Sportsmatch base to try, since there's no stop pin hole.  I might even splurge on a nicer scope to wring her out and see what she's capable of.  Build my first HFT rig off this here Chicom springer.

I must say, it is tastefully done.  The wood is the nicest I have seen on any of the Chinese rifles I've got my hands on.  Remington got it about right this time.  They had a gun built to their specs by the guys that build em for everyone else!  And although it says made in china on the box, i haven't found made in china on the rifle ;)

I say "about" right, because it is still built in China.  But if it were German or American, I probably couldn't afford to buy it on a whim- regardless of the discount.

No luck at my local store. Did find one at a pawn shop, but they want 110.00 for it.

Take the action out of the stock and check the trigger group for a small Phillips head screw with 4 lock washers. Remove 2 of the lock washers and reassemble. That was all that the trigger needed for my Remington Express.

Called Remington today, waited on hold for over ten minutes for them to tell me to call Crosman.  Called Crosman, waited on hold for maybe a couple minutes, was told they don't have the parts and don't take over the new remington line until 15 april- they only have old remington/crosman parts in stock for guns like the vantage. So I called Remington back, on hold for 14 minutes and change, to get the same line as before.  All parts have been shipped to Crosman.  I can't wait for Crosman to take point on this, they have always been great about parts.  Meanwhile, what to do?  It might be similar to the B26, but the trigger group doesn't come out separately and I believe this gun has a longer stroke and/or larger piston as well.  Time will tell.  Meanwhile I am stuck shooting this box stock rifle.  Lol it is killing me, I want to tinker with it so bad...

Ah-so  makes sense why Remington treated all my calls and questions like a joke since I bought mine off the Midway sale several month back.  I wrote the Customer Service Manager a snail-mail letter and called after I got no response - they have no idea who the Customer Service Manager is  :-\

I haven't torn into mine yet, but you are right, it does look like it was made to last.  Mine came with Loctite on the screws, but I haven't really tried her out yet due to loose barrel pivot.

Got a question for ya Brian, I've seen conflicting information on the size of the seal, posts saying 28mm and 29mm.  Maybe it don't matter as it's only .004" anyway, but if you replace the seal maybe you can post back where you got it and how it fit before sanding it down?  I think I will go whole-hog since I have to open it up anyway...

Ed-  by the handle NCed- posted some interesting stuff about his Express about a year back.  Apparently the Diana 34 piston seals fit the rifles.  That would be 28mm I believe, but the tolerances of the tubes couod vary a bit.  I will probably try the Diana piston seal from ARH, and maybe a spring from them as well.

I put this seal in mine and it is great. Smooth real nice cycle. OF course I did tune it, and got a B26 trigger from Mike M.
