So I'm trying to post some photos and I keep getting the "file is too large" error. I'm using an iPad as a camera and I can't find a way to reduce the size of the photo but I see pix posted that seem to be every bit as large or bigger than the ones I want to put up. So I'm a computer dummy and need help. Any suggestions. I posted the profile picture from the same iPad with no problems.

You will have to take the picture at a lower resolution. If you are using a computer Microsoft has a easy to use resizing program...
-
Two sticky threads in the Announcement Gate will help anyone wanting to add photos.

I believe "size" refers to kilobytes (200KB is the limit in this case) rather than dimension but they are related. If the iPad still comes with the "Preview" app for viewing pdf's, etc., check to see if there is a "tools" menu. If so, you should be able to both crop the photos and reduce the dimensions to get under 200KB. I know this is so on a Macbook but I don't have an iPad so ymmv. When I take pictures with my Kindle, I usually email them to myself so I can adjust them on my laptop. I don't know if that option is available to you. I hope that at least gives you something to go on. Good luck.

Hi Rick,
If you have a PC, the easiest way is to put them in Photobucket and then link them here. That was there is no size limit.
I'd be happy to talk you through it over the phone if needed, just send me a PM.

Rick,
I have always used my iPad or iPhone to post pictures here but I have tried countless times to start a new thread today and I could not get pics to load. This is how I've done it in the past.
Take picture with iPad or iPhone.
Email the pics to yourself. This gives you the option to choose file size. I choose medium or small making sure the file size is blow 200kb.
Save the image from the email.
Then use that photo to post on the forum.
This has worked flawlessly in the past but not today. I keep getting the message that image jpeg is not allowed. But then see in the list of usable files is jpg.
I would love to know what has changed. I even tried posting pics I've posted in the past and it wouldn't work.

Like Tater said use photobucket or some other hosting service. Upload your photo there then link to it in your post.

Jpeg & jpg are the same protocol. If you change the extension to .jpg, it should work fine. Unless that was a typo . . . then, never mind.
-
Not a typo. I thought jpeg and jpg were the same thing? I don't think I change from one to another on iPhone or iPad ? Not sure.

Jpeg & jpg are the same thing but the forum software will filter out .jpeg as an extension. You should be able to simply rename the extension to ".jpg."

Evidently I'm not the only person who finds posting pics on GTA a nightmare. It's like someone consciously sat down and said to themselves "let's make this just as confusing and convoluted and step filled as we can possibly make it". That's why you see no pics from me, waaaay to much............Why do we only see pics from a teeny, tiny minority of posters? (maybe a couple dozen out of +10,000 members) The vast majority of posters we never see pictures. Why is that?
Not all of us went to school with a computer in front of us since 1st grade. What may seem like nothing to some is everything to others.

Once I have the picture on my computer I right click on it and click "open with paint" then resize it until its below 200kb. This isn't the best way because when I post pictures people have to click on it to see the full size picture but it works.
-
Ok, this is rediculous! I opened a photobucket account, which is stupid cumbersome on iPad. I uploaded some pictures and copied the links to post in a new topic. The forum still won't except them. The link from photobucket still uses "jpeg" instead of "jpg" and and they won't load. I'm not Bill Gates but I'm not Quasimodo either! This worked fine for years but something has changed with the forum. Some have said they use the direct link option or image id. I tried both.
-
Ok, I tried three more times using photobucket. Third one worked. I had to delete original written post, rewrite it, add the same links as before, and post again. No Idea why it worked this time. I need more coffee, or maybe less...

I use photobucket for some things but it is such a clunky website that takes far too long to do simple things.
The free image viewer software Irfanview has a little checkbox when you go to save that lets you give a file size for jpg. When you save, it will tweak the compression ratio to give you the best image quality without all the trial and error.
It is a great program, been using it for almost 20 years. It can display almost any image format you're likely to encounter. Easy to resize (CTRL+R), just use the space bar and backspace keys to do a slideshow of a directory filled with pictures, and much much more. I would not be without it.

I've used Irfanview for years too. Great free program.
My offer still stands for the OP, just send a PM and I'll talk you through Photobucket over the phone. It sounds like you might have it working now, but maybe you're not using it to post the easiest way possible.

Is there any way possible that the web host could change the site image file type to allow .jpeg? This simple change would allow the vast numbers of us iPhone and iPad users to upload our photos once again.

jpg was in the allowed list but I added jpeg also.

Mike, believe it or not, a computer geek was the LAST thing I ever even thought about being. My job as a radio chief engineer by happen stance MADE me learn computers. Now, I'm not only a technician but my job is as a network administrator. Dooohhh.....
Anyway, the two stickys in the Announcement Gate are great tutorials. The photobucket.com route is by far the absolute best way to go for quality photos without having to go through the resizing nightmare. I have also gone into the forum software and increased the size limit to help folks some, I almost doubled the limit of a photo size. Read those posts we made just to help. It may be daunting at first, but after you do it a time or two, you will see just how easy it is.
And maybe it's just me but I can't stand to be uninformed. I enjoy learning, even as long in tooth as I am. I hate being uneducated more than having to learn something new.
